  • A lot of you may know Olaf Haraldsson from the show Vikings Valhalla. But today we will delve into the life of the real Olaf who would die a saint, but according to the sources his life was far more unholy than one would think. At one point Olaf was a feared Pagan and became a warrior in the Baltic region.
Over the years Olaf became a mystical figure and was a hero in folk traditions where he was the slayer of trolls and giants and the protector against malicious forces. He is even symbolised by the axe in Norway’s coat of arms and has his own day of celebration. So how did Olaf Haraldsson become Saint Olaf and what king of battles and trials would he face? This is his story.

I thought that vikings valhalla was going to be great, especially that it was more historical ( Leif Eriksson, olaf, haraldsson and so forth) but and I understand that it's a drama but at least they could have kept it somewhat close to history.

Some cultures have been highly reluctant to adopt Christianity, others have embraced it quickly and willingly. Norway was late to Christianity by European standards and it took a battle to cement the faith in the culture. Perhaps this is one of the reasons Norway is not a bastion of faith. I don`t doubt there have been highly devout Catholics, and also Lutherans following the reformation, but Norway has always seemed almost resentful toward religion, at least from my perspective. In my own country - Ireland, Catholism was adopted around the fifth century. There was probably some resistance but assuming there was, it is not widely known about today. For the first couple of centuries after becoming Catholic (the only Christianity at the time) Ireland thrived. The viking raids weekened our country, created divisions and even though we defeated the Norsemen, the damage had been done. Faction fighting became the norm as different Irish kings fought to become high king at Tara and this made the country vulnerable to invasions by the Normans (who eventually spoke Gaeilic and integrated) and later by the English who imposed their culture instead of adopting ours. Still, I believe in the fullness of time, everything will be as it should. That is faith. I believe the new grail in revelations is intended for the Catholic Church but not as it is or has been for most of it`s history but rather as it is supposed to be.

@Archangel they killed him for his faith. His rule over Norway was peaceful, and his actions resulted in the conversion of Norway. He fought wars in his younger years against vikings to try and save Anglo-Saxon rule over England. As a king, he has a spiritual duty to his people just as a police officer does to protecting the innocent. Was it wrong to try and save his people from pagans who sacrificed people?
