  • St. Augustine did not live the sort of life that you would expect from a saint and doctor of the Church. And yet, his life witnesses to the incredible power of God to convert our hearts and transform sinners into incredible disciples.

Augustine is a n example of one who experienced God's mercy and a radical conversion to christ. He and Paul the apostle are examples that conversion is possible.

My kind of Saint. My favourite would be St.Thérèse of Lisieux, not so much for her holiness but for her humanity. She had doubts and many struggles and she felt she had nothing special to offer. Like many of us, she dreamed of doing great deeds but the reality of her daily life was quite mundane. She wasn't even great at praying; often falling asleep. She came to the Lord with empty hands but she learned from Him that there was one thing she could do; she could be a person of love. I have very many doubts but I always find encouragement and inspiration from St.Thérèse.

    • @anastylos2812
      @anastylos2812 3 ปีที่แล้ว +16

Thank you for recommending St. Therese of Lisieux. I often think that anyone who has no doubts has not really understood Christianity. God becoming human and sacrificing himself? That's quite much to accept. But that's why I think it has to be true. If men had invented it they would have invented something more logical and easy to accept.
Or how St. Augustine said it: If you understand it it's not God.

Old habits must be replaced with new ones, if you can go a month with Jesus being your sole focus every time you get tempted, you can go the rest of your life with this sin defeated. Make a new habit, set a new record, avoid things that tempt you like the plague, protect your self like you would protect a child, set a new desire, a desire to be closer to God and have your heart set free. Life is all about overcoming struggles and persevere! For Jesus loves you and picks you up every time you fall. Keep running in faith. We are made new in Christ.

I'm reading "Confessions" for the first time, I didn't really know much about Augustine's life beforehand. So far the book has me enthralled with it's sheer honesty and relatability, was not expecting a fourth century Saint to have lived in many ways as I do, falling into worldly vices and straying from God. A wonderful piece of literature, for the mind and spirit. St Augustine, pray for us.

She followed Augustine through his debauchery (who is this illegitimate child?) until he overcame his wastrel ways & Monica must have been mightily relieved at his eventual! transformation. Yet, he STILL sanctified the concept of ORIGINAL SIN... to excuse himself from his decades of profligate ways? Sure, blame the woman, thereby cementing his own mother's blameless guilt: ORIGINAL SIN. blamelessness,

In some ways, I see a lot of myself in Saint Augustine. I can truly empathize and relate. I just purchased and am I about to read his “Confessions”. Also I will be purchasing his “City of God” On a side note, having been born in the month of August, makes me think I was destined to eventually come to know and love Saint Augustine. 🙂

Brilliant. Love learning more about Catholics/Christians like this in history who we can all look to when we feel too imperfect for God. The church is made up of imperfect people (edit: who try earnestly to be better daily/christlike to be specific) always has been. That’s what makes it great.

That is such an amazing, "turn a defeat into a victory." type of story that it feels almost silly; and yet it's unbelievably relatable to far too many modern people; it's no surprise given societies' trends.
Lessons can be lost so easily, but they can always be re-learned.

Thank you, padre, for this concise and vivid summary. However, I missed one point - his doctrine of double predestination, which I consider crucial in theology because
1st it tries to solve the eternal question "Why, of God is good, does so much evil exist?",
2nd St. Augustine, next to St. Paul, was arguably the most important thinker of the church, at least during antiquity, and
3rd it was a reason for bitter controversy during the Western Schisma and is probably still the most fundamental difference between Catholics and Lutheran, Protestant, Reformed or Evangelical denominations: The question whether humans are able to contribute to their salvation by works of love or whether we are mere puppets led by God's strings whose fate had been decided before we were even born.

Praise God. Yeah she did, but this is solely focused on st. Augustine. St. Monica has her own story, prob too big to focus on 2 saints. Praise God.

Darn, Clark. I'll be honest with you. Any explanation you get within a TH-cam comment will be incomplete, this is a massive topic.
Much of it comes from the fantastic Gospel of Saint John, especially the first chapter. By far my favorite part of the Bible.
In the original Greek, the word translated to English as "The Word" with upper case in this gospel is actually Logos. Which hints at the Evangelist's knowledge of Platonist philosophy, and with that in context you can tell the parallels and also how the author emphasizes _how_ Christianity _differs_ from Platonism.
It involves concepts of the One, its triple Natures, and so on. Actually, just go ahead and read Augustine himself. You won't be disappointed *I freaking guarantee it.*

With his idea of the Original sin Augustine still remained manichean, as well as the whole Medieval Christianity. In the Greek church such questions were in general not even discussed.
