- Canute the Great, the formidable Viking king and conqueror, stands as the most powerful Viking ruler in history. As the sovereign of the North Sea Empire, his dominion encompassed England, Denmark, and Norway, he was the only king to turn scandinavia into a global power reflecting his unparalleled might and influence. Canute's life and reign have been immortalized in numerous sagas and the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, which vividly recount his extraordinary exploits. These tales celebrate his valor in battle, his astute political maneuvers, and his brilliance as a ruler.
Canute's ascension to the English throne was marked by some of the fiercest battles the British Isles had ever witnessed. His relentless rivalry with Edmund Ironside is a saga in itself, chronicled in medieval manuscripts that highlight their epic confrontations and tactical genius. Even Canute's childhood was steeped in legend. Raised in Jomsborg just like his father Sweyn Forkbeard, a renowned warrior king and Viking of great repute, Canute was destined for greatness from the very beginning.
This is the tale of the most powerful Viking king who ever lived, and the battles and events that led to his ascent. This is the story of Canute the great.

Not only was Canute a fierce and noble warrior, but he also knew how to respect courage - even if it was from the opposing side. The respect he had for Edmund Ironside and vice versa always makes me smile.
He was indeed raised by the Jomsvikings the most legendary order of viking mercenaries ever. The war against Edmund was truly epic as documented in the Anglo Saxon chronicle and many sagas. The tale of the proposed duel was one of legend. The respect these warrior kings had for each other was something truly great. It’s rare when adversaries have love for each other. Was honestly a joy to read while researching this episode. I hope you enjoyed the video!!

This is who I wanted to see a spin-off series about. Cnut is a true legend and hero.
That was an absolute brilliant match. Very well documented and not boring. Thanks.

Always loved that Canoe the Great and his brother Little Yachty the less well known.
Cheers from Mercia
Glad you enjoyed it! Cheers from Kent!
Excellent presentation, giving a history that could be confusing and with conflicting contemporary reports in a clear and logical manner. Half-Danish, I am familiar with many of the people mentioned, and it ws great to learn more about their adventures.
Thank you so much for watching and your kind words! I hope you enjoyed the video!
Great figure. Always love to learn more of him! Thanks 🎉🎉🎉🎉
Thank you so much for watching! The most powerful viking king to ever live!

Great video keep it up you're doing amazing things also if you haven't made a video about does kings could you make one for English kings of war of the roses or kings from 100 years war?
Thank you so much! Yes I will cover most of the english wars! Thank you for watching!!
Very, very good 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 enjoyed that
Thank you so much!!!!
Great video for truly a great figure! Because of Canute's forging of the North Sea Empire, England saw peace from Viking raids for almost 20 years. He was a 4x grandson of Ragnar and lived up to his renowned bloodline. Although it is a shame his male lineage died with his sons Harold Harefoot and Harthacnut.
He shouldn't have spilt up his sons . Should have pick 1 son 2 rule all .
Thank you so much Jared! It is a shame his empire died with him! The one and only time the Vikings were a superpower in Europe! Imagine what Canute could have done with the kingdom of England Denmark and Norway if he turned to conquest! Yes harthacnutes end was especially sad being poisoned at a wedding….. it was truly Canutes brilliance and reputation that kept all earls, lords, jarls and would be kings in check
I agree, although he designated hsrthacnut as his heir, his brother Harold usurped him for England, and Norway had turned against danish rule…. The decline of the empire was a sad thing to see
@@historyprofileswhere is this guy buried today???
@@IFAMILYIH He was buried at the Old Minster in Winchester, England. When the Old Minster was demolished in 1093, Canute's remains were moved to Winchester Cathedral. They are among the remains in the mortuary chests that rest on top of the choir screen.
YESSSSSS been waiting so long for this one, Canute the Great definitely one of the greatest/underrated Kings/Vikings of all time.
@@mktf5582 indeed turned Scandinavia into a global power uniting most of the kingdoms and England! If he would have lived longed who knows what would have happened!!
@@historyprofiles House of Knytlinga (Literally means Knut's Descendents) would have been real life House Targaryen if it would have survived, North Sea Empire would/could have rivalled the greatest Empires of History.

@@mktf5582 indeed it’s a shame harthacnut died poisoned at a wedding….. he potentially could have re- invaded Norway and taken it with the forces of England and Denmark.
Just makes you think what kind of king he was as he only ruled England for 2 years so there’s not that much information on him.
Canute story is truly legendary. Raised in jomsborg by thorkell, I mean it dosnt get much better than that in terms of growing up preparing to be a warrior king

Thank you so much for watching! I hope you enjoyed the video!!
@@historyprofiles VERY much so. I love that you have so many figures from post-Roman and the early monarchy. Thank you for all the work you do!
Hope you don’t mind but I have a suggestion regarding Playlists…
I think it would be cool to create playlists based on shows, where the videos about that specific show would be. For example, one for all historical figures from The Last Kingdom and another for Vikings.
I just think it would be much easier for us views to binge ALL videos on a specific shows from a playlist, rather than going through the channel, potentially missing/over looking some from the show and probably getting distracted by other recommendations from other channels.
But I completely get that…
1 - it’ll take you forever to find all videos from every show you have ever covered
2 - someone will probably ask for a playlist dedicated to specific figures themselves, such all a playlist for every video regarding Alfred the Great.
3 - if we scroll through your channel, we’ll probably stumble across other videos that peak our interest and thus you get more view haha.
Would love to hear your thoughts. Until then, keep up with the outstanding work! I love the channel.
Thank you so much for that recommendation! I never actually thought of that and I am going to implement it! So thank you so much for the suggestion and create play lists also based on tv shows so thank you so much! I hope you enjoying the content!

No it is not, it has an idiot narrating it.
Excellent narration as always, very thrilling. I loved it all except for the cowardly and repulsive assassination story of Edward Irsonside. I am going to believe that his being ill during the invasion that he succombed to his wounds.
Thank you so much!!! I personally don’t believe that account, just thought I’d include it as there is a historical picture associated with it, I personally believe that died of festering wounds/ poisoned/ or was killed in a different way

Great video, I just don't understand why you don't use the name Knut. You translate it, even though there are historical records of the correct spelling of that name.
Granddaddy!

Thank you for watching Cheryl!
Something about his mother? Cnut was half Dane and half Slav because his mother was a Polish princess.
Canute-Cornett
Nice footage, but taken in 🇨🇭 not 🇩🇰.
Vinland saga
Super 👏 but his name was Knud 😊 can you say it 😉
@@user-fh4tm6vw6y apologies for my English pronunciation! I didn’t want to butcher the danish pronunciation 😂 I hope you enjoyed the video/documentary!
As Canute is the way you see wrote back in Old Nordic times - today’s modern pronounce of “ Knud “ in Denmark are for sure not the way he’s name was spoken back then . Look also at Swedens and Norway’s way of saying “ Knuth, Knut “ ….
Actually you have to be a detective in “ names “ when doing your family tree. Example of changes in one name/nickname in my family ; Johan … ( Johannes, Iohannes, John, Jon, Jan, Jess, Jonas , Johann, - and not to forget that in east europe it was ( Jerzy, Jan ) … another name Jacob ( Yep and Ib ) where there are dates related to my search there are sometimes name change into nick or real name as where to the person was from in region of world.
His mother was a Polish princess…
I thought it was spelled "Cnut" and eventually became the English word "knot"?
King in England
Why you showing knights on horses bro lol bit confusing
What part? Most of the art is labelled and tells you exactly what it is
The Tower of London would not be built for another 50 years after you claim Eadric's head was displayed there.
It’s referred to as the Tower of London in the Anglo Saxon chronicle, therefore there was a fortification there long before the original Tower of London was built with the same name.
I think what you meant is that there was a tower of London, the original tower of London, which existed in these eras and in these sagas in many different forms before the permanent one was built in that spot which essentially came with a unified kingdom of Britain.
I feel I saw a short documentary about it recently.
I just know your videos are very accurate
@@incarnateflame3462 thank you for that explanation
I have to humbly interject, regarding the claim that he was the greatest Viking to have ever lived, when one brings to mind Harold Hardrada, who accomplished arguably more, yet wasn't born with a silver spoon I ones mouth, or even Rollo, the Father of the Norman's who had 400 years of acclaim on the world stage building empire's on a whim. For a massively subjective question, your claim is rather difficult to accept.
@@NoelCarroll-wv6qd I think I said most powerful not greatest, If I did say that I agree with you, hardrada video coming soon!
@historyprofiles He came from basically nothing, travelled from Norway to Constantinople via Rus lands, and was told not to come back for his woman until he was very rich, started from nothing within the Verangian to eventually the most trusted. Harold Hardrada had to have been one of the most single-minded and driven individuals that I have ever studied historically, although Irish, I have 24% Scandinavian and baltic DNA, hence my interest in Viking culture
@@NoelCarroll-wv6qd got a 1 hour 20 min doc on his life story coming out in a few days. So many scaldic verses and tales surrounding him, was honestly a joy to read about him

Knut, NOT Canute .
How about some new material, seems like I'm listening to the same thing each video
Any suggestions good sir? I just wanted to re make some of the characters from Vikings Valhalla in a documentary format, as I have a lot of knowledge on these figures and their tales need to be re told and Vikings Valhalla changed and butchered a lot of the real story
Why do they always portray the Vikings as having shaved sides/ man buns? Can anybody verify that this was, actually, a Viking hairstyle?
I don’t actually know about the bun, the Vikings were cleaner than the Saxons though, bathing often and they were known for combing their hair and beards, one viking was even known as silkbeard!!!
@@historyprofiles which is funny because they try to portray them as more savage looking than the English.
It's. Call Nordicbraids aka the man bun
Impossible The real danny gee is the most legendary viking. 😅
childish version of the history ... Canut the Great was half Polish, his mother was Swietoslawa, daughter of powerful Polish king Mieszko I. Canut invasion was sponsored by Polish king - he gave him 2000 best Polish soldiers, and money for 2/3 thousands mercenaries, mostly Saxons. By the way - Canut , after successful invasion - paid tribute ,every year - in gold and silver - to Polish king. It means England was Polish colony, untill 1066
It's actually Knud or Knut in Danish...you only write it Canute, because you refuse to learn how to pronounce it properly, though you could easily.
While at it. Queue is not pronounced Q English alphabet.
