    Thank you for understanding the “longing” aspect of this band. A lot of people hear “happy go lucky” music. I hear a real deep sadness, a yearning, a longing for something. You hear a tortured soul in the midst of all the beauty & colors in their music. “Don’t worry baby” is LITERALLY** about a high school kid telling his girl not to worry and how much he cares. But in the big picture, there’s a mystical feeling & universal expression of human suffering. It’s almost as if God is saying “life is hard but you’re going to be okay” I want that song playing on my death bed. And that’s just one example. There are so many more. The general tone of The Beach Boys is the human soul reaching for something. At least that’s what I always hear

      I agree with you completely, however: in Don't Worry Baby, it's actually the girlfriend saying "don't worry baby", and she's psyching him up for a car race.

    This is a tremendous insight into unfathomable genius of Brian Wilson. No one has ever experienced what you have shown us except, I guess, the Boys themselves and the few that perform his songs. What a shock to hear these parts indivually after we've heard this song played year after year. I was always amazed at Brian . Now I am speechless.

    This is my favorite Beach Boys song too and after that “Don’t worry Baby” is next.
    I studied music from 5th grade to Senior year and won the band award my Senior year. Music is my passion and I can appreciate good sounding harmony. Beach Boys definitely delivered. I have them singing this song acapella on my music playlist and it’s just heavenly and phenomenal.

    As far as I understood it, Tony Asher wrote all the lyrics on Pet Sounds. I actually relate to the type of musician Brian is. I’ve always been more of a composer/ arranger/ producer who works best on songwriting with a partner. It’s a brain thing. I’m not sure why I get stuck on simple songwriting stuff but have no problem arranging complex vocals and musical passages.
    Edit- checked out your album. Good stuff! 👍🙌

      Actually it was a collaboration. Brian Wilson also wrote some lyrics and I think the only song where Tony Asher fully wrote is Caroline, No.

    Excellent breakdown of the parts. I worked out a 4-part version but, as you said, every voicing feels necessary. When you take one out, it's missed. Oh - and really great singing! You have a really sweet voice and range. Have to ask... did you auto-tune this?

    • @KevinToddMusic
      @KevinToddMusic  2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Thank you so much Lorne for the kind words! 😊 exactly, when it comes to harmonies as complex as these, it’s pretty tricky to remove some voices and still keep the same emotion. And ABSOLUTELY i use auto-tune, and I am NOT afraid to say so 😅 for vids like this where I’m demonstrating the notes of the performance, the most important thing for me is to make sure the notes are as correct as possible, not necessarily the tone of my voice, thus autotune!

    It is wonderful to see you break down the harmonies, thank you! ...and for the 'isolated vocals' link, excellent. I'd love to see you execute these harmonies without 'scooping' so much. Scooping is a modern style which I feel takes away from the purity of sound, especially of the BB. The BB nailed the notes straight on which gave the voices clarity and perfection in their harmonies.

    Lead vocal is 9:58, but it's not this smooth version. Wilson is stage acting a type of singing that all Spector singers seemed to have, which was a put-on amateurish sound. Nobody ever needs to sing like the lead vocal here, but that was the fad. The sharp attack at the beginning of the notes and the fake, "oops I lost it" outro for the notes.

    I always knew there was a lot going on in that song. On the Pet Sounds recording session CD, the vocals only track could almost stand on its own. I mean, it definitely does for me, but there are a few places they'd have to add some vocals for the places they "let" the wrecking crew do their thing with no voices. :-) But the depth of the harmonies surprised me. Wouldn't It Be Nice is just one huge load of goosebumps.

      Thanks so much! :) i only use one mic, but each voice is triple-tracked to better match the tone/vibe of the original recording

    Sir, consider to make a explanation of a simple beatle song, that would capture the soul of their harmonization, i'll think on sugestions!

      Nobody could touch the Beatles' songwriting, but their harmony constructions were mostly simple. Obvious exception: Eight Days a Week. If I Fell also has creative two-part harmony. I'm sure someone will mention others I forgot. The Beatles stuck with two or three voices and didn't do the complex moving parts Brian Wilson specialized in. The Beatles' magic was John and Paul's voices, which just blended beautifully, with George rounding it out on the bottom. Think of it like this: Tons of bands do credible Beatles covers; very few can pull off a Beach Boys tune, almost none can do the complex ones like Wouldn't It Be Nice.

      Because would be the choice for a Beatles harmony cover.

      Yes It Is has, I think, four parts. Not horribly complex, but it's definitely a harmony thing going on.
