@@es330td Me too...Good Vibration, God only Knows, Wouldn't it be nice and Sloop John B really taught the world what beautiful complex harmonious music sounded like. I think Paul McCartney was freaking out after he heard Good vibrations. He already declared God Only Knows a masterpiece...to have Good Vibes come so soon after...phew...on the other side of the world, John Lennon wasn't freaking out...he was getting inspiration for Strawberry fields foreever...but I still love the idea that these two bands would have fed each other ( as we know Wilson was quite impressed with the album Revolver, and felt pressured to produce something half as good!! Well, Pet sounds was superior to Revolver some may argue, but it's funny how Pet sounds was the kick in the butt the Beatles needed to do Sgt Pepper, arguably the best album of all time)

He certainly doesn’t get the credit he deserves, I’m a huge Phil Spector fan and I’m fascinated by producers. Brian Wilson is a genius, considering all the demons he was battling his vision was incredible. Carol Kaye (bassist on Good Vibrations) asked him when does this baseline ever work? In my head, he answered.

Brian Wilson was actually embarrassed by his falsetto voice. It was wonderful to hear him sing. Perfect harmony with his two brothers Carl and Denis. It was rounded out with his cousin Mike Love and their childhood friend Al Jardine. Absolutely gorgeous harmony that Brian Wilson orchestrated during The Beach Boys musical career.

You're right, he was embarrassed because he thought he sounded like a girl. It wasn't really falsetto though, it was definitely a genuine head voice. He was able to ascend and descend without 'throwing' his voice into the upper register.

One of the pure genius singer, writer, producers ever. Another great one to listen to is “I Can Hear Music” or “God Only Knows”. It was interesting how the Beatles and Brian Wilson pushed each other in those early years. Pet Sounds was inspired by Brian’s admiration for Rubber Soul which then pushed the Beatles to make Sergeant Pepper. Paul’s daughter said family friends told her that her dad would play, “God Only Knows” over and over saying he wished he had written a love song that good, which is high praise from the guy who co-wrote Yesterday and Michelle.

R M - Paul McCartney wrote "Here, There and Everywhere" in response to Brian's "God Only Knows"... and it (like "God Only Knows") is one of the most beautiful love songs ever written. Paul has said that "God Only Knows" is the best love song ever made. And Brian told Paul that "Here, There and Everywhere" is his favorite love song. These two amazing singer/song writers, who were born just two days apart, have a great love/respect/appreciation for each other.

A fun thing to do to any early Beach Boy song, and to realize how great their harmonies work, if you have a good stereo system that truly has a "left/right fader," try turning only to the right or only the left channel on, and listen how awful it sounds in single voice, and then adjust back to the middle mix to see how truly GREAT they sound. And, since most of them were related, you also have that family harmony in there to! What a great band, and a great song!!
Next time, Beth, try "Good Vibrations." MASSIVE harmony on a more complex level in that one, for sure!!

    • @TonyM132
      @TonyM132 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Early Beach Boys songs were not in stereo. All of their albums through 1967 and singles through 1968 were in mono (or "Duophonic" fake stereo which was basically just a slight time delay between left and right to create an echo effect). In recent years much of the material has been remastered into true stereo mixes from the original multi-track tapes, but unless you seek that out, by far the majority of 1961-67 Beach Boys music on any physical format today was mixed in mono - same voices (and instruments) in both left and right.

Nice observations! I'm a BB fan from day one. In '63 and '64 (age 12 and 13) I was lucky enough to hear the BB's live before Brian quit touring. I remember hearing the older teenagers after the concert say "Did you hear that high voice guy (Brian)? He was amazing!" Their vocals were excellent without monitors or mic'd instruments using the house soundsystem. When they toured Pet Sounds, they were among the first, if not THE first to use a mic'd system and bring strings along in those early days. There are lots of a capella tracks and even some of Brian adding a couple of bars of harmony around that are well worth the time!

Yes, and if you do, please use the version released on The SMiLE Sessions in 2011 (4 minutes 15 seconds for reference) since it includes a _fantastic_ harmony part following the bridge which was not included in the originally released version.

Love the fact that in the production of this there is time given to hear drums at the start, guitar later on that just keeps you focused on what is coming next, exquisite harmonies and lead vocal which also given their own space to be heard in all their glory then all elements combining.

Moving harmonies always. While I’m taken with great vocal harmonies, it’s the blending and timbre of the voices that always made this group so outstanding. Harmonies created by people with shared DNA are almost always “next level”. Brian, Carl and Dennis were brothers and I believe Mike Love is a cousin. Think of some of the greatest harmony groups such as Larry Gatlin and the Gatlin Brothers, the Osmonds, the Ames Brothers, the Mills Bothers, the Andrews Sisters, the Everly Brothers and so on. Voice blending like that make it very difficult to pick out parts.

I'm so happy TH-cam recommended you. Maybe because I've been searching piano tutorials for this song? I love how happy you look while listening. That's why people love The Beach Boys, ABBA, etc. It makes people happy. I've been teaching myself piano for 3 years and started YT one year ago. I got the courage to sing 3 songs so far. Imagine, Back Home Again by John Denver, and The Cheers Theme Songs. My siblings sing in several of my videos. Thanks 🎹 👍

I heard the Beach Boys twice live, once c. 1977 in an indoor basketball arena (magical -- they had some 12,000 people singing along, especially during Good Vibrations) and once c. 1982 in an outdoor stadium, also excellent. The group may have provided the best concert experience I've ever had in that indoor performance, at least among the best. Loved listening to them on the radio and occasionally on television in the Sixties and Seventies. Thanks for this blast from the past and your fine commentary.

This song and several other Beach Boy songs trigger a strong feeling, kind of hard to explain....it feels like Optimism, SoCal beach weather and cruising with the windows down 🤗. I can smell the baby oil at the beach, that was the sun tan oil back in the day. Funny to remember when Nancy Reagan initially didn't want The Beach Boys to perform in an Independence Day Concert, because they weren't wholesome enough....🤔. Oh, how things have changed.
Also, in a later iteration, Glenn Campbell was part of the lineup 🙂.
    Thanks 🤗.

I confess I don’t know if you already have, but I would love to see you reacting to 5th Dimension. They had awesome harmony works, and probably the most iconic of all is Aquarius/Let the Sunshine in (but many other tracks, as well). Greetings from Brazil
