In my youth as a metal head, I always found The Beach Boys cheesy and lame… the epitome of old dad rock…. As I’ve grown up I’ve realized how wrong I was. I’ve come to love The Beach Boys and regard Brian Wilson as the musical genius he is

I never cared about what people thought - came to the genius of The Beach Boys first as a young teen in the early 90's (and paid for it being made fun of), hated metal and hip-hop, but then later came to embrace metal and hip-hop, beat-making, etc. So eventually, we all come to the same place I guess.

Excellent. Another astounding thing is that the Beach Boys performed Heroes and Villains in some of their live shows. They sang those complicated parts while playing their instruments. Of course, they had wonderful side musicians that toured with them (not the Wrecking Crew, who were primarily studio musicians), and some of the side musicians sang as well.

I always liked the Beach Boys but never took them too seriously because all I knew was their pre Pet Sounds hits and never listened to complete albums. One day I was stoned and listen to God Only Knows on TH-cam and saw Heroes and Villains on the side bar. I clicked it and wasn't prepared for what I heard. It was amazing, unlike anything I'd ever heard. I got into the whole Smile Sessions and it changed my life. I listened to it every day from beginning to end for over a year. I also went back and discovered their albums and their post Smile material up until Love You. Simply amazing. Too bad that Mike and Al wrestled away creative control and put out all those crappy albums afterward.
You're definitely correct about the 3 part choir overdub, There's 20 or so minute long video on TH-cam called the making of Smile and it shows Brian in the studio re-recording everything from the SMiLE album in 2003 or 2004 for his solo release of it. There are only 3 people on a mic for the sustaining chord vocal harmony.
Wow, I don't remember that segment of the documentary although I must have seen it. Great job. I think Dennis tended to sing the parts right above Mike, so he's probably the Baritone 1 part; plus, I believe there are quotes somewhere from Brian talking about Dennis doing that cupping-his-mouth thing to get a specific kind of sound. I can't think of where I've seen that, but as soon as you mentioned the technique it rang a bell. Keep up the good work!

I really like Brian Wilson! I've heard Smile - my favorite "unreleased" song by Brian is "It's Over Now" from Adult/Child also an unreleased Beach Boys album. You can hear the 10 year difference between the two songs. Mike Love said it wasn't Beach Boys music anymore. This was very interesting. I love a good musical analysis - that's what this is. Did you ever try MuseScore for Mac instead of Digital Performer? It's free and very good for writing and producing sheet music and playing back what you wrote. (I'm not affiliated with them in any way, I just like their kit.)
Heroes and Villains is my alltime favorite song. There is the most beautiful 20 seconds of music ever written right after "You're under arrest!" starting with "My children were raised..." Mike love should be dipped in honey and thrown on a hill of ants for crushing Brian's dream. He'd be a wal mart greeter without Brianand his family was rich!
I haven't heard this song since it came out in the late 60s but, today out of the blue I was singing this song! I thought it was called Hero's & Villagers instead of Villians. Before singing this I was so upset about politics in DC & this happened. I see Mr. T as the Hero & the left...Villans!
My gut tells me that this section was influenced by another great American creation, The Mills Brothers, who were famous for emulating various instruments with their voices.

Watching is a voluntary affair. I have a video that is the more abbreviated version of this lesson as well. The basic format of my channel is not brief nuggets of musical knowledge but rather exploratory lessons where I try to extract the hidden gems of the compositions. In my youth as a metal head, I always found The Beach Boys cheesy and lame… the epitome of old dad rock…. As I’ve grown up I’ve realized how wrong I was. I’ve come to love The Beach Boys and regard Brian Wilson as the musical genius he is
It's really a shame how common this sentiment is. I remember thinking the Beach Boys were like an outdated American Beatles, but the first time I listened to Pet Sounds, I quickly changed tune

I never cared about what people thought - came to the genius of The Beach Boys first as a young teen in the early 90's (and paid for it being made fun of), hated metal and hip-hop, but then later came to embrace metal and hip-hop, beat-making, etc. So eventually, we all come to the same place I guess.

Excellent. Another astounding thing is that the Beach Boys performed Heroes and Villains in some of their live shows. They sang those complicated parts while playing their instruments. Of course, they had wonderful side musicians that toured with them (not the Wrecking Crew, who were primarily studio musicians), and some of the side musicians sang as well.

I always liked the Beach Boys but never took them too seriously because all I knew was their pre Pet Sounds hits and never listened to complete albums. One day I was stoned and listen to God Only Knows on TH-cam and saw Heroes and Villains on the side bar. I clicked it and wasn't prepared for what I heard. It was amazing, unlike anything I'd ever heard. I got into the whole Smile Sessions and it changed my life. I listened to it every day from beginning to end for over a year. I also went back and discovered their albums and their post Smile material up until Love You. Simply amazing. Too bad that Mike and Al wrestled away creative control and put out all those crappy albums afterward.

You're definitely correct about the 3 part choir overdub, There's 20 or so minute long video on TH-cam called the making of Smile and it shows Brian in the studio re-recording everything from the SMiLE album in 2003 or 2004 for his solo release of it. There are only 3 people on a mic for the sustaining chord vocal harmony.
Wow, I don't remember that segment of the documentary although I must have seen it. It is not common to have legato and staccato parts intermingled like this and I thought it was a very unique approach.

Great job. I think Dennis tended to sing the parts right above Mike, so he's probably the Baritone 1 part; plus, I believe there are quotes somewhere from Brian talking about Dennis doing that cupping-his-mouth thing to get a specific kind of sound. I can't think of where I've seen that, but as soon as you mentioned the technique it rang a bell. Keep up the good work!
Just found this, referring to Wouldn't it Be Nice: “[It] has a very special and subtle background. One of the features of this record is that Dennis sings a special way, cupping his hands,” Wilson stated in the liner notes. “I had thought for hours of the best way to achieve the sound, and Dennis dug it because he knew it would work.”

Dubway, which I had nothing to do with writing or recording of was more of an exploration in human beat box techniques and production than it was about contrapuntal, elaborate vocals. If you listen to the harmonies and rhythms of the vocals in Dubway they are always in unison as opposed to this Heroes and Villains line which has 9 parts, most of which are doing totally different rhythms. I really like Brian Wilson! I've heard Smile - my favorite "unreleased" song by Brian is "It's Over Now" from Adult/Child also an unreleased Beach Boys album. You can hear the 10 year difference between the two songs. Mike Love said it wasn't Beach Boys music anymore.

Did you ever try MuseScore for Mac instead of Digital Performer? It's free and very good for writing and producing sheet music and playing back what you wrote. (I'm not affiliated with them in any way, I just like their kit.)
My impression has always been that the Baritone 1 part is actually hummed. It just sounds that way to me on the original recording.
Heroes and Villains is my alltime favorite song. There is the most beautiful 20 seconds of music ever written right after "You're under arrest!" starting with "My children were raised..."

I haven't heard this song since it came out in the late 60s but, today out of the blue I was singing this song! I thought it was called Hero's & Villagers instead of Villians. Before singing this I was so upset about politics in DC & this happened. I see Mr. T as the Hero & the left...Villans!

The basic format of my channel is not brief nuggets of musical knowledge but rather exploratory lessons where I try to extract the hidden gems of the compositions.
