  • Turgon, the son of Fingolfin was a High-Elf of the Years of the Trees and the First Age in Tolkien’s works. He had the secret kingdom of Gondolin constructed which would play an instrumental part in the events of the Silmarillion. Thank you all so much for watching, I hope you guys enjoyed this episode! Let me know your thoughts about Turgon in the comments, and I’ll see you again next week! As always, a great thanks to the online artists whose visual works made this video possible! If you are one of the artists, please let me know and I will post your name and a link to your work in this description!

I find it so ironic and funny that Gondolin was literally in Melkors back yard the whole time when he was looking for it. And thank Eru for Tuor saving what he could and preserving Narsil. Excellent video and thank you so much

Gondolin was from the very beginning under the special protection of one of the mightiest Valars - Ulmo. It just happen that it was is still on land after all, islands surrounded by water were totally out of reach for Morgoth because of Ulmo mastery over that element hence his attempts to get Osse - a Maiar under Ulmo as his ally.

“Unnumbered tears” is one of my favorite epic battles in middle earth. It was the first time men, dwarves and Elves worked together to stop evil once and for all. Hurin must’ve been exceptionally amazing and brave to have headed this alliance against Melkor, Hurin is said to be the greatest human warrior ever and I would agree. It’s just sad that the curse laid upon him and his family would have such devastating effects on his son Turin.

Hurin was steadfast, more than others, but much more susceptible to-and weakened by-his losses of faith and hope. In this, respect, Beren is surely the mightier and more admirable human warrior.

      G. Thomás Hart Berens convictions made him stronger, but I’m talking about battle tested physical warrior. Which he has been tested and proven time and time again, also learning with Turgon in Gondolin. I will say Beren is stronger willed and very brave.

Personally I felt that Turgon should have been the one to shelter a pregnant Morwen and Turin instead of him leaving the responsibilities to Thingol. I just find it very ungrateful of him to abandon Hurin’s family after Hurin sacrificed himself to allow the elves of Gondolin to escape in the Battle of Un-numbered tears. I know Turgon was trying to keep Gondolin’s location secret, but he did send sailors and messages to Cirdan in hopes that they would sail back to Valinor to receive aid. So that’s why I believe he could have sent Elves to spirit Morwen and Turin to Gondolin. The only reason I can think it as safe call is because of Hurin being placed on the mountain top and magically being allowed to witness the suffering of his family may have also allowed Melkor to witness the suffering too. And if they had gone to Gondolin Melkor would have learned of the location sooner. I’m curious what others think about all this

    • @ellerj641
      @ellerj641 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I know this comment is a little old but I wanted to share my thoughts. Even though the safety of Gondolin played a huge factor here, Morwen was extremely stubborn and prideful. If she refused to be a guest (or I can't remember the word. She was basically comparing herself as a slave if she stayed with king Thingol) for Thingol, she would most definitely refuse to stay at Gondolin. Especially considering once you enter it, you cannot leave. She would have had a fit and possibly a meltdown before either escaping and revealing the location, or being killed by the guards of Gondolin (and possibly getting her equally stubborn daughter killed too). It wasn't until she pretty much didn't have a choice, and the path was finally cleared, when she finally went to Menegroth. Even then, she refused to stay especially after finding out about her son and we all know how that went.
You are right with Melkor keeping a close watch on Hurin's family. He had spies everywhere and being a Vala, he had a bit of foresight and perceiving eyes. He knew what happened to each member of his family and even sent some evil after them to make them suffer more. Glaurung was icing on the cake. He also most likely knew how stubborn and dumb Morwen was and her children were going to be/are the same as her. The family's own pride and stubbornness, and hotheadedness caused most of their problems. Melkor just needed to wait, give them a light tap, and they went down.

Tuor brought it with him from Gondolin and gave it to his son Earendil who in turn gave it to his son Elros. It stayed in Numenor until it was brought back with Elendil to Arnor which is where the trolls were. A lot of the relics of the northern kingdom were lost in its destruction.

What Varun said above and yes the trolls and other fell beasts migrated south from the Ettenmoors with relics and treasures. Glamdring was among several items found far later in the Trollshaw area by rangers and of course Thorins company.

I suspect the downfall of Turgon and Gondolin was inevitable. Turgon fell under the Doom of Mandos. Choosing his end centuries before. All things are as they are, for they can be no other way. If that's true, it makes the tale all the more sad.

I hate to point this out, but the Valar aren't gods. They're very akin to high-level angels, while Maiar are akin to low-level angels. Ainur (the Valar and the Maiar) means "holy ones". Eru Iluvatar is essentially God in Tolkien's Middle-earth, especially when you consider that his very name means "The One Father of All."

Well, I know their tv show will have a non-linear story over the seasons, so the first season is confirmed to be about Aragorn pre-LotR, but the second, third, fourth, and fifth seasons could each be about any story. I personally would like to see the Fall of Gondolin, the Fall of Moria, Fall of Doriath, and maybe a story about the betrayal of Ulfang's kin? Like how Morgoth's spies infiltrated, and them planning the betrayal, etc.

I wonder about the city shown at 6:40. At first I thought that it was Aquilondë , or perhaps a city on Tol Eressëa. However, I’m beginning to think that it really is Andúnië on Númenor, In which case it would have existed thousands of years after Gondolin.
Love this video, as I enjoy all of your videos. The story of Turgon and the fall of Gondolin is definitely one of the cornerstones of the Legendarium. Yes, it is a classic FA story of hope, tragedy and almost no redemption. Tolkien is brilliant in the way he presents these various threads of his history, and in each major tragedy there is always some brilliant point of light. In the case of the fall of Gondolin, that would be Glorfindel and the events that led Eärendil to return to Valinor.

In my opinion, Gondolin was maybe the most powerful and most feared nation of the Noldor. Morgoth feared very few Elves (like Feanor or Fingolfin), and one of these elves was Turgon because of Gondolin. I think an army without dragons of balrogs would never be able to conquer it. What do I think of Turgon? ... hm ... well Turgon_the_Wise is my go to account name for video games so ...
Though I guess "the wise" part of his title quite ironically applies more to the days when he was younger.

I haven't pre-ordered the Fall of Gondolin, sadly, but I plan on picking it up as soon as it is available at my local brick and mortar bookstore. I really enjoy these kinds of videos, it'll be really cool to see what Christopher Tolkien has made of his father's work with this new book. Many thanks for the fantastic video as always, and keep them coming. I turn off adblock every time I watch one.

Love how you always find the moral behind the story, Yoystan, and nail it!
One thought though - do you think Turgon's downfall was really arrogance? I think it may have been more his complacency, as Gondolin had evaded the attention of Morgoth for so long.

Pride bringing the reason for Turgon's fall - most assuredly. I personally think he was willfully ignorant, though it has been a while since I read The Silmarillion.

I have a request, would perhaps be interesting aswell, would you consider making a video about Faramir and when Aragorn ascended the throne of Gondor, did Faramir support his claim as he was the steward after Denethor died? And about the dunedain of Gondor, I have heard about dunedain from the north but never of Gondor before...

Yet another great video and outstanding narrative man, very accurate and spot on from the Tolkien canon. Thank you again.
Indeed it is sad that of all the things that could bring Gondolin to ruin it turns out it would inadvertently be Turgons sister. But I don't believe she meant it to happen. Turgon pleaded and tried to make the case that one and all, the elves of Gondolin could not leave because by doing so they may be followed or discovered thus revealing the cities location. Unfortunate it was that his worry came full circle. Had she not left it could be assumed that eventually Melkor may have found it but still he did not have to wait long for someone else to do that for him. Melkor HATED absolutely hated elves, and so knowing where the city was meant its doom. Sad story but good did come of it because it finally woke the free peoples out of a long slumber of complacency.

Im fairly a novice when it comes to the rich lore of Tolkien's universe but from what i can gather in watching your videos, it seems the Elves have a tragic history and slowly fade away as the age goes by. Seems like those who reside at Valinor are the remaining Elves by the 4th age.

After watching and listening to both parts of the tale of Turin, I was glad to see that the use of the name "Mormegil" was clarified to one that was used by Turin, and not given to the sword he carried, as was indicated in the video of famous/infamous named weapons within the legendarium.

It's interesting that the names Turgon and Gondolin are of Sindarin name origin? Shouldn't both be of Quenya origin?
