Forget all the vietnam stories - this guy spent 9 days in a phone booth with his angry ex who couldn't do anything to help and wasn't talking to him. Talk about bravery and grit! All respect.
This was one of the best things I've ever listened to. Jocko could read ANY book and I'd listen to it. Mr. Rutan could tell any story and I'd do the same. Real pleasure.
Thank you for doing these podcasts with these fighter pilots from Vietnam, Jocko. Being a fighter pilot in SEA was seriously crazy as hell, and there are so many-I mean so many-good stories. I’ve said it many a times, but my grandfather was KIA in Laos in an F4.
So thankful to have this 2 listen to. I woke up and my therapy cat got hit by a car so this stretch of a great interviews gonna help take my mind off of things 4 a while. But plz be nice cuz I don't want the crazy cat lady comments bcuz he was a part of my family & he got me thru a serious bout of depression & is 1 of the reasons I didn't give up. But anyways Jocko ty 4 getting me thru a very tough day!!
I'm sorry to here about your kitty. No jokes here. I doubt very highly there are many people who are Jocko fans that would poke fun at that. God bless. Don't let it drop you back into depression tho. That can b hard to come back from
One of the special moments of my life, I was at the Sun & Fun Airshow in 1997, when 2 Rutan long-ez's pulled up and it was Dick Rutan and his wingman. They were on a round-the-world flight for a special cause. I was about 20 ft away from Mr. Rutan. I was always impressed with his courage and his Supreme flying skills in flying that highly stressed Voyager aircraft. I remember watching in your horror after the plane took off and watching the flexor of that wing with a full fuel load. It was absolutely terrifying. Now I'm even more impressed after listening to his story which I have listened to this program twice. Superb program Commander Willink. PS, his brother Burt Rutan is one of the best aeronautical Engineers ever.
Damn, this is some hard stuff. Running out of fuel simultaneously and also the ability to fry all those dinks with machetes, but choosing not to for the downed pilot's sake, on the slim chance that he survived. Obviously not "above the carnage in a plane". God bless him and all his fellow Vietnam combat vets.❤
I'm just about to listen, and I love the title. You Only Fail if You Quit. I'm building a late in life new career in Real Estate, and I love this message.
Halfway through this one on spotify. Another excellent episode. Vietnam guys are the best guests for sure. It's amazing how much detail they remember about everything.
Awesome episode - Mr. Rutan is a fascinating and inspiring man. I would love to see a color photo of his shirt! Not sure why, but it seems like it might be important. Thanks!
My grandpa Larry Jose was in the Air Force for 24 years. He was drafted into Vietnam from Wilton, ND straight out of high school in 1967. As a kid he started on a farm learning how to drive a tracker at 12 with 6 brothers and sisters. His parents immigrated from Germany. All the kids were put to work as farm helpers in Wilton. He chose air force because he knew he had a better chance of living, and is still alive today. He doesn’t talk a lot about what he went through. Larry has only told me a few stories about basic after I graduate from Oscar-188 USCG. I would love to hear Larry Jose’s story, but he only tells me when he thinks I am ready. The difference between my grandpa and I is he would stay at the top of the hill of his property in Goldendale, WA while I was a kid, telling me to watch out for the rattle snakes. I would tear down the canyon anyways with a deaf rescue cattle dog my mother took in, imaging plots on how I would kill the snakes thinking I was going to make it all the way to the Columbia Gorge. I have been picked on a lot growing up about my learning style because I have a tendency to dominate, I do not have a disability.
His story about his mom telling him he could do it made me cry. I’m the same way with my 6th grade students. I try to instill in them they can do anything.
These men have gone beyond the expectation of what a family member or even a lover would do for sometimes a stranger. I tear up just hearing the absolute texture of the pure truth within their voices and how the absurd truth is spoken. I prey upon prayers that I can honor this tradition od mankind when and if needed at a moment of my life for another Love Life Energy 114 CXIV
So that's what Chuck Yeager describes in his book, that flying in combat, against an enemy that is shooting at you is the most thrilling, rewarding flying experience. I guess it takes a particular mindset to see it that way.
What a helluva life story this man has! Thank you for your Service and Welcome Home sir! That term "Motivation Moderation" is something I've never heard before, but it's something I won't ever forget!
I woke up today thinking of the title - no matter how many times failure wants to slap you in the face and stomp you into the mud it’s the amount of times you get back up that directly correspond to your level of success
This is 100%, it can blast out of nowhere, anyone who thinks you can fly for 20 years and not be scared of heights, it's totally real it can appear out of nowhere suddenly and extremely
Fascinating discussion. My great grand father was taken to from Poland to the Germany as a free labourer during ww2. He told as impressed he was when he saw american pilots flying in a perfect formation in huge Numbers and Germans were shooting on them heavily but none of them even move a bit.
WOW...! DINUBA CALIFORNIA...?!?! Has one of many heroes....! Thank you sir for your transparency in overcoming personal and deep debilitating opposition. 👍🏽 You as well as many of men and women who served our nation and made ultimate sacrifices ❤️🇺🇲💪🏽🙏🏽 for my children for my own life for us who know how truly blessed we are living in the greatest nation in the universe literally.....! My pastors dad also served in the air force and before he left us to meet our Father in heaven this year. He made a tremendous impact in my life. The stories he had the experiences he walked through could not compare to our worst days here never! People just don't understand the freedoms and liberties we have here now, today. Mr Shipman my pastor's dad had a big heart for those in struggles of life. Addicts, gang bangers, prison convicts. He made me believe I could change my environment if I only change myself. And listening to men and women as this HERO here on your podcast most truly inspires me to become the best father I could be and learn to listen and talk less. Thank you for your Bravery and sacrifice. Amen ❤️🇺🇲💪🏽🙏🏽
Farragut Navy base is located in Bayview, Idaho, a few miles north of Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. I live a few miles north of Bayview and have driven through the town and past the base many times. It's a research base. Neat little town, nice people.
Always was weird watching my uncle run into other nam vets, they always made short quick comments referencing how they were hated coming back home. Never even cared till I learned the history, prison or war the man took a gamble and chose war.
I was able to oppose Bud Day at an administrative flying board at Ft. Rucker back in the day. He became an attorney after getting out of the military and represented one of our helicopter pilots who did something stupid over the beaches of SE FL. He represented the pilot and I represented the government. They basically wanted to spank the pilot’s hand, but the adventure of the hearing was something I’ll never forget.
