When we investigated, we found a .22 shell lodged in the grip of his shoe, and the bullet lodged another 100mm or so in front, still in the grip of his shoe. So a person can set off a .22 cartridge, let alone a horse.
Try "Loop" earplugs or similar. I use for motorbikes and mowing/chainsaw use . They are a metal earplug with a rubber dampener.

That ammo is pretty accurate. The Winchester stuff I shot was a 4” group at 100m. Rubbish stuff.
