    Star Trek (2009) is not a better film than Star Trek: First Contact. First Contact was a beautiful culmination to the Borg storyline of Star Trek:TNG. It was a very deliberate move when Captain Picard suffered assimilation. Some of the shows' writers, producers, etc began to feel that Picard needed to be seen as more human and vulnerable and thus "The Best of Both Worlds" parts 1 and 2 were created. The First Contact movie was a perfect "Cherry on top" completion to the TNG Borg storyline and should be ranked #2. It left me wanting for not.

    A dishonorable mention of "Insurrection"? With Star Trek I and X on the list? Really? Although it's not the kind of film you'd expect in a movie theater, of the four TNG movies it's the one that most reflects the mood of the TNG series. It may however not be the best TNG movie, but it definitley deserves a spot on the list.

    10. The Voyage Home

    8. Generations
    7. The Undiscovered Country
    6. ST '09
    5. Insurrection
    4. Nemesis
    3. Into Darkness
    2. Wrath of Khan
    1. First Contact
    I've fallen asleep both times I tried to watch The Motion Picture...
    And yeah... let's not talk about The Final Frontier. The only good thing I can say about that movie is that it gave us Nimbus (Star Trek's version of Tatooine) which is pretty fun to run around and explore in Star Trek: Online.

      I really enjoyed the space battles in Nemesis. I think it has problems, but it shouldn't be that low in the list.
      However, I wouldn't actually include Generations in the top 10 at all. It basically seemed to bring magic in and Star Trek doesn't normally do that. Also I was confused by Malcolm McDowell's alien race that doesn't age.

    • @LeviStutzman
      @LeviStutzman 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well even then, the original movies were cutting edge visual effects when they came out, so its ridiculous that people say that there are too many special effects.

    • @NickMichalak
      @NickMichalak 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      I criticized BOTH movies for being weak and generic with its story and villains. Neither movie do I believe are very good. The Avengers is as stock as it gets, and was the weakest film in Marvel's Phase 1 Universe for me. Into Darkness suffers from a lack of sophisticated, intelligent, ORIGINAL screenwriting. Khan bares zero resemblance, either physically or in personality, to the actual Khan Noonien Singh we know. Both The Avengers and Into Darkness are lesser films for relying on flash and style trying to dazzle you with something visually spectacular or witty dialogue instead of actually building a strong, weighty story with dimension and non-contrived consequence.

    • @LeviStutzman
      @LeviStutzman 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nick Michalak You just criticized Into Darkness for not being original, and Khan was too different from the old one...

    • @NickMichalak
      @NickMichalak 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Because there's no reason WHY Khan's entire personality is the stark opposite to what it's supposed to be. Why reuse Khan if you're going to change his entire character and personality? The timeline changes from some 25 years ago should have zero affect on a guy who has been in cryogenic freeze for the last three hundred years. He should wake up the same guy as in Space Seed. Into Darkness tries to attempt original things, but when it does, it falls apart because it's built on shaky ground and relies on retreaded concepts. Why not create a brand new villain with the same personality that they gave Cumberbatch's Khan? Then, you're freed up to do entirely original things instead of doing this half-and-half compromise that does not succeed in any way at all. They change everything about Khan, but are still shackled to wanting it to be Khan to some degree so they have to weigh the character down and dillute the potential of what they could do with a character like this if he wasn't Khan to being with. Instead of charging forward with an entirely new and original story, they create a patchwork slapping other peoples' ideas and material into their film without understanding that material to be able to utilize it properly. Doing something original would be not retreading Khan, but building up their own fresh, original character that can stand on his own. Instead, they bring back Khan, but he has nothing in common with Khan even though they say he's Khan. He's Khan in name only, and thus, defeats the purpose of having it be Khan to begin with.

    • @Grudgebearer47
      @Grudgebearer47 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nick Michalak That's why its called a reboot. They don't need to use the same Khan.

    I think "Star Trek Into Darkness" is WAY better than "Star Trek" (2009). And before you look at the picture next to me and say "you're just saying that because Benedict Cumberbatch is in it!" - you're goddamn right! He was such a great villain he made the movie great. Eric Bana is a good actor but he was totally wasted in Star Trek (2009).

    Nemesis had some good elements, but was overall lacking. My favourite Star Trek movie to this day is First Contact. Somehow I never really took to the TOS crew (though I tried), which is one of the reasons I have no urge to watch the reboot movies.

    So many butthurt fanboys. Just because something is new doesn't make it bad. 09 Star Trek and Into Darkness are reboots meaning new intetpretations of the characters and stories. They work. Kirk and Spock are younger in these movies, they have yet to learn/become the characters they are in the classics. Many of you obviously only saw the obvious action to be expected in a modern sci-fi movie and were quick to dismiss it. By being so close minded you've missed the depth the movies have. I.e. Sure Kirk is too much of a playboy in these films but Into Darkness is obviously focused in progressing him as a character. He has fun with his missions and doesn't take things seriously. But he's called out because of it and even loses his title as captain. Then a close friend of his dies and thus he's conflicted for the entirety of the movie. Throughout the course of the film he learns and accepts that he isn't fit to be captain, but it's the role he must play. He admits he doesn't know what decisions to make but leaves it up to gut feelings. Hes willing to do everything for the sake of his crew including sacrifice himself. Thus by the end of the movie he's a completely different person than he was at the start of the film. Excellent character development. Same with spock. He is highly logical, but he too has been called out on his "inability" to feel. But throughout the film he learns and accepts his human side. These characters are naturally progressing to become the characters from the old franchise you all know and love. Quit bitching about it!
    Take those nostalgia goggles off. They are good movies. If you think theyre flawed you gotta go back and rewatch the old ones because they are just as flawed. Old Star Trek was good for its time, just like the modern ones are good for a modern take.

      I'm a major fan of the classics, and I think that the originals trump the new ones in most every way, yet that doesn't mean that the new is bad. The problem is that Star Trek back then had a radically different approach to writing, since the new ones share the name every fans dislike for the differences get exaggerated. Of course the new ones are not trash, they are fun, but I and many other fans loved the unique way that Star Trek approached characters and storytelling, and without that we cannot hold the new ones as highly.

      The J.J. reboots have been a godsend to original Trek fans in the incredible amount of respect paid to the past. Even someone who hasn't seen any of the old Trek movies or shows will be simultaneously entertained and intrigued enough to seek out the roots of the characters and universe that Roddenberry created. If anything, I think Into Darkness should have been upped a couple of notches or even swapped with Star Trek, since it was a LOT more fun and really seemed to show how well the reboot characters coalesced into the legendary crew Trekkies hold dear.

    • @dinkmartini3236
      @dinkmartini3236 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Lee Caskey Lee, I'd tell you to stop speaking so universally if it wasn't for the fact that I do it all the time. Here's where your argument fails: You can NOT type " J.J. reboots" and "incredible amount of respect paid to the past" in the same post. You might consider not trying that in the same universe. NOTHING could be more at odds than those two things. Nobody has betrayed and bastardized the franchise more than that hack. This one was hard to swallow as well: "seemed to show how well the reboot characters coalesced into the legendary crew Trekkies hold dear". I'm a trekkie and I don't hold any of that "dear". That is NOT young kirk and believe me they could NOT get spock more wrong. Spock would willingly run his little green balls through the ringer before he'd make kissy face with someone on the turbolift. Here's how they could have played that lift scene and remained true to the character. She could have been all over him and he just stood there. There's a million funny sex lines that she could have blurted out. "You are so stiff, I love it when you play hard to get, how many years to pon farr?" and those are just lame ones off the top of my head. What could a Hollywood writing team have come up with? Vulcans are not lead around by their dicks. In fact the OPPOSITE of that is what DEFINES them as trek characters. They have not rounded spock out, they've destroyed him. This is all my fault for putting too much stock into a fiction that could be bastardized for money. They've got mine so I'm under the bus while they try to get yours. The biggest crime of all this in-fighting is that it simply did NOT need to happen. JubJub could easily have remained true to the canon and pleased all the trekkies but in his massive ARROGANCE and DISDAIN for the franchise which he openly admitted he did not like, he chose not to. FUCK HIM AND FUCK THOSE THAT SUPPORT HIS WRETCHED FILMS. Sorry for taking this to such an extreme but my blood boils every time I argue about it.

    This is going to come across incredibly nerdy, but that's probably the right tone considering the content of the video. This list pretty perfectly sums up the problem with this channel. If you're the kind of person who puts Wrath of Khan at the top of the list, it's because (as the video itself states) the film is not carried by effects but by its cerebral writing and top-notch casting, in other words its humanity. The Star Trek reboots are the image of Star Trek without its spirit-- none of the cognitive depths, compelling villains, philosophically problematic science fiction. You might put the first reboot at six or seven; that's understandable, as the film remains very fun. But to be a fan of Wrath of Khan is nearly tautologically to regret the death of its cinematic virtues in the newer adaptations.

    Thank you for saying Star Trek III never stops being awesome. Its my personal favorite because I felt the adventure was more personal. Also, the costs for finding Spock were high and unrefundable. Also, while I agree with its place on the list, Star Trek the Motion Picture was necessary. The franchise needed that big budget, movie-event type of treatment as a kick off. I think that led to the franchise being taken more seriously as a movie franchise rather than just movies that used to be a television show. Thanks for the list!

      Please, tell me, what's so wrong with the cast? I think they actually did a good job.

      Nothing is wrong with the cast. I said it was the one redeeming feature. Except for Kahn, he was perhaps the worst miscast I have ever seen.

    As a child, I always thought Star Trek was the dumbest shit ever. I'm grateful for the reboot because this shit is awesome. I probably won't watch any of the old ones because I can't stand watching old (sci-fi) movies. Which is part of the reason why I kinda don't wanna watch Star Wars.

      I totally agree I've tried to get into the old 1s since the reboot but the technology in the reboot makes the old 1s look really bad, the graphics are almost like old doctor who tv series comparing to new doctor who series, for example.

    "Wrath of Kahn" is definitely the best of all the movies. Abrams movies I dislike intently. Predict he will ruin the SW movie he is currently working on....hope I'm wrong. The Next Generation movies, I'm indifferent. Thanks for posting.

      JJ did exactly what he set out to do, and that was to bring Star Trek to a broader audience. As I agree with this list, the previous films were fun to watch except 5, that one was just terrible. Star Trek brought a massive amount of visual effects, something that Trek Needs to have. These films are mostly great, the new films show us what a great budget can bring.

      Star Trek was always fun to watch, but also well-written and groundbreaking. Abrams-Trek is just generic action series.

    The reboot movies are unwatchable. They are truly the worst things to happen the franchise. J.J. Abrams should be drummed out of Hollywood, but instead they give him the Star Wars franchise as well?! WTF?!

    • @570y3n
      @570y3n 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      the franchise was fading because the previous 2 movies were awful and let's not even start with Enterprise.

      Steven Toyen Insurrection is so-so, but Nemesis is possibly my favorite Trek movie, aside from First Contact and The Undiscovered Country.

      The Shinzon's plan makes no sense. It also makes no sense how the SLAVE RACE PEOPLE built the most MASSIVE SHIP IN THE EMPIRE. The stupid pointless scene with the Argo makes no sense. They exemplified everything wrong with the Star Trek movies (i.e. shoot everything and have no fucking intelligence!) in one entire film. Neither the writers nor the actors couldn't give two fucks about that movie and neither should anyone else. Watch Mr. Plinkett's review of it if you want in depth explanations.

    • @JaceFincham
      @JaceFincham 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Steven Toyen The actors DO give two fucks. Several of them said they disliked the director they had for the movie, and I believe it was Marina Sirtis that said the director hadn't even watched an episode of Star Trek. I think parts could've been done better, but overall, I felt it was one of the most enjoyable movies of the series. BTW, the Argo scene was awesome.

      I knew after seeing Star Trek into darkness I’d hate Star Wars the force awakes.
      I knew JJ would rip off everything from the original trilogy making his film unoriginal.

      Yeah, it was kind of an unexciting action flick that tried to cover up its wretchedness by remaking scenes from more famous films.

    • @ForceMaximus84
      @ForceMaximus84 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was very disappointed in it. Instead of going a unique route with characters and creatures we haven’t seen since TOS, we got a rehash of Khan. The subplot with Admiral Marcus and his daughter was interesting, but Alice Eve was terrible as Carol (she didn’t even try to hide her accent when her character was obviously American).
