I'm neither fidjian nor welsh and it still felt like this referee was trying his absolute hardest to keep Wales afloat. He gave like, what, 4 warnings in this entire game? Was he thinking about giving a card on the 5th? 🤨
Maybe not the 5th, probably 7th warning then the card will come out

There want 4 warnings though! Did you even watch the game? It was 4 minor infringements with a warning on the 4th and then a yellow. The Fijian yellow was a major infringement which was, collapsing a moving maul meters from the line. He’s lucky it wasn’t a penalty try (which it should have been) let alone the fact he never picked up fijis repeated offside nor them coming into the ruck from wherever they pleased.
That’s not even mentioning raising up in the scrum twice.
"keep Wales afloat" it was the four tries and 248 tackles that kept Wales afloat, or are you claiming that the ref was responsible for those too? 😂
World rugby need to stop naming a UK official to referee one of the UK teams! Conflicts of interest are so obvious and it hurts Rugby badly! You won’t see that in Football!

As a french, this is the most unfair referee i've seen since the 2011 world cup final. Welsh people should not be very proud of their team tonight, they just manage to use all their experience and trickery to trifle with the rules. They showed unfair play by stopping the game and gaining time, and systematically did cynical foul play when fijians were close to score. The ref was just speaking at the captain when it should be cards or penalty tries... and just later fijian got a yellow card on their first penalty in their 22. We can also talk about the litigious denied try, the multiple no arm tackles and offside welsh players that Carley didn't penalize.
The best team lost tonight and it was painful to watch.
Carley almost ruined the best match of the week- end so far, as well as the chance of an historic win and qualification for the Fijians.
Nonetheless well done to Fiji, good luck against Australia.

Au contraire, mon ami.... Wales 241 tackles against Fiji's 70. Against a very physical and fast Fiji team in very hot conditions. I am very proud of that performance. Fiji also infringed many many times in most ruck situations that were ignored which you failed to mention.
Well said...Wales played hard and fast at the start but bad sportsmanship at the end as Fiji had the momentum to possibly win took away all their credibility!

Neutral observer here, but that was very controversial performance by Referee Carley, Wales should have definitely been yellow carded for repeated infringements. Remember Carley was the Ref who carded 2 All Blacks in 2 mins for repeated infringements, bringing them to 13 men, only a couple weeks ago. Today's performance was wildly inconsistent with his own standard set in the AB v Boks games.

I don't know if you remember the France v Wales game in 2017, that's the one where they played about 100 minutes, and allowed your countryman to swap a prop forward for a crucial scrum near the Welsh line.
Shame on Wales, Wales weren't making the decisions, whether good or bad.

You should have watched the France v Wales game in 2017, the one where they played nearly 20 extra mins, and allowed the french to swap their prop for someone feigning injury, that was a beauty.
It shouldn't happen at this level but it does, even Jaco Peiper overlooks things.
A great game but sadly you cannot not talk about the reffing which was inconsistent to say the least. The Fiji team should be frustrated for the double standards showed by M. Carley. A second yellow card for Wales seemed only logical and might have changed the final result. Why is a British nation like Wales reffed by a British ref? Why wasn’tit possible to have a Japonese or Georgian ref for this game?
Because Wales and England are different nations with a strong sporting rivalry. If anything, a Welsh ref is more likely to be biased against England than against any team playing them.
I've been saying this for years. Brits will say, like poster above, "oh but we hate each other". And then they go on to play together with the Lions. And surprisingly there is no "strong sporting rivalry" in the olympics....where the UK has a single team. This is part of the reason why rugby has not grown internationnally like football.

Refs are killing the game. Yellow cards for an accidental head clash, but repeated infringements on Wales try line and nothing.

It's a case of consistency for the ref at critical points of the game. It's done now, and I hope for the sake of the game it gets addressed. Great performance from both teams!

Then after same thing happened before the third Fiji try, you got warned too, and even did another penalty, but the play ended in the Fiji try, so the ref jus let it pass. As a Welsh, i do feel very sorry for Fiji. Refs were super bias and as much as i am happy my team won, it feels like a very disappointing win. Fiji deserved that one, even with the cahnces they had.

Naming a UK ref for a game implying a UK team is already scandalous and risible.
France and Italy have to go through that every year in the 6N. And when there is a doubt, it's rarely in their favor.

As a fiji fan..our two worst nightmares as fans came true in that match
1. We had two "Paddy O'Brian moments" i.e the two disallowed tries that would have been tries which could have won us the match
2. And one "Severo Koroduadua moment" i.e. Radradra blundering the potentiallly match winning try.
Nevertheless Radradra shouldn't take it too hard on himself. My takeaway from this is that Fiji can legitimately compete..its really up to them to work on the flaws they had. But they did okay in all.

Wales were good in the first half, but not exactly out of this world. Fiji made mistakes in both halves, but the game was at their mercy at the end of the second. Poor decisions and handling errors cost them. Wales made some stupid mistakes as well. Ref helped them.

Red all day long according to new rulings a mirror image of Tom Curry incident, straight red! Somehow it’s not even reviewed via the ref orTMO?

I think Wales rode their luck a bit, but nearly 250 tackles by the Welsh is a great defensive showing. Fiji should be proud, but they need to cut out their mistakes in downing their Tries otherwise they would have won.

Refs should change at half time. One person ref first half and a different ref for the second half. The Scotland v South Africa wasnt great either. We seem to be at a point where we can't say anything about the ref, so its good that its discussed here atleast.
Was one of a thrilling game to watch. Unfortunately ruined by bad refreeing and officiating refs. For the love of rugby, this was the worst refed game.

Fiji went off their feet constantly at the mauls, there were numerous Fiji no arms tackles, there was a clear forward pass before a Fiji try, they dropped the ball over the line and failed to score, the last action of the game was a shite pass. Why don’t you get over the fact you were not good enough to win. If Wales can’t beat Australia, then they don’t deserve to progress. You people are using the ref as an excuse for not winning. It’s a sad indictment of your overall understanding of the game (which probably many of you haven’t played). You make your own luck, you take all your chances then, any referee decisions dont matter. STOP YOUR WHINGING. You beat Australia, no ref cross examination or complaints there.👍🏻

If it was any other ref ,Fiji would have 5 points. There should be a lesson here .Never allow a British ref to officiate at a world cup game between UK nation and non UK team .I actually think this should be subject to an investigation ,it was an injustice and a stain on the integrity of the rugby world cup.
Look at the score in the 70th min Wales 32 - Fiji 14 then Fiji decide to play rugby, we got a Fijian player coming on from a yellow, Wales are down a player until 78 min, Fiji then decide let’s go and play rugby.
Credit to Wales it was an utter barnstormer of a defence, they were hitting the Fijians backwards, the score line matters not could haves, or should haves, you learn that in boxing early, Fiji lost Wales won and credit to them they could have done it easier.

Fiji weren’t innocent out there. Lots of coming in from the side that wasn’t given. But overall we, Wales, were very lucky at the end. Deserved a card.
Shame about the controversy though as it was otherwise a great game of rugby. Some nice free flowing stuff from both sides and a lot of defensive work going in. Both teams did lack discipline though. But that’s what makes it interesting at times! 🤷♂️
Not just that game. The france v namibia game was absolutely horendous, i've witnessed lesser drops of the ball being not rewarded a try and apparently its a new rule that you dont have to be in control of the ball when touching down a try apparently your hands dont even need to be involved!!! This goes against every bool and video i've read and watched about the game of rugby.
Officiating has become a way for world rugby to control/participate in the game itself.
This referee did not hesitate to give NZ two yellow cards in the first 14 minutes of the warm-up game on August 25 which SA 35-7 NZ. You have to wonder why he didn't yellow carded Wales. The only excuse is he only give yellow cards to successive mauling and lineout offenses (which NZ committed), while he doesn't think other successive offenses are cynical.

Tier 2 will always be up against 16 on the field. When Fiji becomes a Tier one team, then we will see what happens. As for those penalties . In my opinion, Fiji made the mistake of trying to chase 7 points rather than take 3 and possession kicked back into its arms, When there was so little time on the board, (ten minutes), they lost precious time on scrums. I get super frustrated when teams pile on the phases, get within yards of a try and then get a penalty and go for 3. I hate it, so dream of winning the lotto and setting up NGP Rugby ( No goal posts) lol. Love to see the Fijians going for it, BUT if it was such a good idea every Tier 1 team would be doing it, so the fact they all take the 3, means there must have been quite a bit of thought gone into this scenario and conclusion has been to take the 3. I think if Fiji had taken 3 every time Wales offered it up Fiji would have won the game. I am thinking the ref , being a tier 1 ref, was giving away 3 points as punishment. How was he to know that Fiji was going to persist in a fashion almost unknown in T1 Rugby. Preeep ! Take the 3. Preeep! Take the 3. Preeeep! Take the 3 Preeeeep!! for Gods sake take the 3

@@fobmaster Indeed, and overall they did a good job of it (especially in the second half) with only 18% tackles missed compared with Fiji's 37%. Also, as large and strong as the Fijian pack is, the total weight of both teams was identical.
Fiji, on your nxt game, when scoring tries, look for where the camera is and ground the ball in clear view for the TMO (then do this to the camera
