      Ireland was once a highly respected team, boasting a 6th-place world ranking and a reputation for consistently defeating top-tier opponents. We approached every match without fear and were known for our formidable resilience. Our performance remained strong until the mid-2000s when a significant decline set in. Kenny has since made remarkable improvements to the team; just four years ago, our ability to even pass the ball was in doubt. Nonetheless, Ireland is a nation with a rich sporting tradition. Our rugby team holds the top spot in the world rankings, and we have world-class boxers, golfers, and more. There is no reason we can't set our sights on achieving the highest standards in football as well. Personally I believe loyalty to players is the cardinal sin in sports. Players should be dropped on a moments notice if they are not on form. Ultimately our players do not have a winning mindset, they rarely experienced winning, and winning becomes habit, as does losing. This team is caught in that mindset. They fear success as its new territory for them . Kenny has done a decent job and has built a team that at least can compete, we are just too inexperienced at winning and this won't change. @@LeMerch

    Did people really believe it was a one manager fix?? That it would be that easy???? Of course not. We had 20+yrs of hoofball. The game died here under that. The reason our squad is the worst one we have ever had is coz of decades of terrible football/negative coaching from yth team up to national team. Lets give passing football a bit longer then SKs reign. In the long run itll pay off for the game here. Hoofball wont.

Even if they did know u'd be waiting 20 yrs to see them string a couple of fancy passes together. Lets stick to what we used to be good at and were known for. Lets pass that knowledge and culture on by getting the right people to teach the u16's etc. Get some old premiership players to show this useless bunch how to defend for a start, then we can worry about get fancy.

      I firmly believe we can produce top quality footballers here if we encourage them to enjoy playing the game, to pass, to dribble etc. Theres loads of talent among our kids. We are just missing out on it as they arent taking up the game. If we market the game much better to the next generation then we will produce better footballers.
      This island has produced plenty of great footballers b4. The only reason we have stopped over the last 20yrs or so is coz we have let the game die here via long ball football.
      GAA and rugby have moved ahead of football when it comes to hoovering up young talent. The whole set up needs a revamp. It seems to be happening now with youth football which is great. SK tried it with the international team(unfortunately he inherited the worst squad ever tho.... tks to 20yrs of hoofball).. It didnt work for SK but that doesnt mean we give up... AFTER JUST 3yrs !!..
      We need to engrain a passing, technical football culture into our country. If it takes 20yrs to see the progress of that then itll be 20yrs well spent. Unlike the 20yrs of hoofball under Trap, ONeill and McCarthy where the game literally died here.

We lost confidence, stopped taking risks etc. Against the Dutch you could see the players took the easy option far too much. Kept passing it back to Bazunu for him to go long. Thats understandable tho as confidence was rock bottom by the last few games. When that happens then the manager has to go. Useful skill set to have developed in the players but maybe best to go back to a “park the bus , long ball , counter attack” team ? Knight is a decent player in role against Dutch . Progresses ball , good retention , few good passes that might have resulted in goals . I’d not be playing malumby or smallbone much though . Very regressive . Don’t want to take any responsibility on the ball to make something happen . Safety first and back passes which puts pressure on defence and allows teams to settle . I think this is where Kenny got his selections wrong . Wanted progressive football but played safe players that put not making mistakes over making play first . Few of the lads have proven themselves to be up to it and few lads to develop over next few years . To be honest I think Kenny did an ok job and things looking better for future

    We cannot accept this. Yes we can and we should because
    1- We don't have the players who are good enough. The fact that James McClean is still starting for Ireland in 2023 is glaring. The last credibly skillful player we had was Wes Holohan and he spent years toiling in the lower leagues.
    2- We don't put the systems in place at grass roots so we cannot produce the player pool. Nowhere near as the underage systems in Denmark, Belgium, Switzerland etc.
    3- We don't have a strong enough domestic league (irrespective of the money). The LOI is improving but it's still a long way off.
    4- We don't have a 10 year plan with a program in place much like the Ireland Rugby team had for RWC 2023 which was started in 2013. We need to have something like this. Belgium did it years ago. Denmark did it. Switzerland did it.
    5- We don't have a playing style or system that is unique to Ireland that can become a doctrine to be rolled out to underage and grass roots.
    6 - We don't have players with a diverse mindset or skillset because young Irish players are mostly sent to England to lower leagues. Only recently have they started going to Europe. Look at teams that are similar to us in terms of their history of football who are getting better because their players play in the German, French, Spanish and Italian leagues as well. It's not a mystery.
    What will a change of manager do? Give Ireland to Pep Guardiola and he would possibly win more matches but our players would struggle to adapt to his system. During Ireland's golden eras, we had players playing for the top teams in England who were winning or getting European Cup experience. We don't have that now. There is a reason our players are on low positioned premier league teams, benched on the higher ones, or are toiling in Championship. They are not good enough.
    Population and competition from other sports is not good enough an excuse. There are smaller nations with smaller playing pool who are perennially better than us. Grass Roots is the only way forward and it will take a generation (10 years) to implement if not longer. In the meantime we can fuck around with managers and getting embarassed

    I think a figure like Kenny is needed in a technical training director role within FAI, distilling a vision for technical training starting at the youth level that eventually bears fruit at the Senior International level. As a Senior International manager, Kenny is not equipped to do the job of winning the match on the pitch by using the best tactics for the team he has, as other Irish managers have been able to do. The conundrum is how the organizational vision aligns with winning matches when it comes to Senior squad selection. The manager obviously dictates that, but if the manager's only concerned with winning the match however it needs to be done, you may be forestalling the development of players emerging from the enhanced training setup.
    Maybe we should just hire Spaniards to right the ship. I hear they have a now former director available, Rubiales or something...

    It’s all down to a wider problem within the game in Ireland. First, look beyond the narrow focus that has infected soccer in Ireland and see how other organisations operate and you’ll realise that the FAI and the LoI are small narrow minded organisations. The club game in Ireland needs to think differently,from the smallest community based kids clubs right the whole way up all the levels to the the senior men’s and ladies teams. The outrageously bad state of the LoI and the clubs in it, is just a disgrace. An outright disgrace.
    Stephen Kenny is absolutely right with his philosophy on how the game should be played but we have to recognise that he’s just the first manager to try this. We have people that can compete but from the time that they first kick a ball as children they are victims of the small minded people that are in charge, where win, win, win, is the only focus. That has to change. Stephen Kenny has been successful in one aspect - he has shown us that the systems we have in place now in Ireland are rubbish. There are no proper structures or coaching in this country andthe realisation is growing that it’s going to take a complete paradigm shift right across the entire amateur game in Ireland from when the youngest kids start playing, right through to the national representative levels. We need more people with Kenny’s philosophical approach to now come in and start coaching and running the game at the grass roots levels. At the moment, Soccer and how it’s run in Ireland, isn’t fit for purpose. And when we begin to develop the game here, if it means a ten to twenty year period where we win nothing or qualify for nothing at senior level, then so be it.

      Indeed. I remember reading an article where Ruud Doktor recommended a root and branch reform of the youth system in Ireland, only to be met with hostility from the schoolboy leagues. “What the f**k does he know about football in Ireland?” was apparently the response.
      I personally would recommend more small sided games for younger players, with an emphasis on retaining possession. People playing on adult pitches from eight years old only encourages hoofball.

      @davidpryle3935 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheLastAngryMan01 More scapegoating about coaching ! The fact of the matter is, great players are not produced by coaching, they are produced by nature. There are still plenty Irish players making it as professional footballers in the English league. How high a level they make it in that league, is down to nature. Ireland will always struggle in the truly global game of football, as Ireland is unique in Europe, in the fact that football is a minority sport in Ireland. If it wasn’t for the great dedication of the officials and supporters of the LOI clubs, who somehow, against all the odds,have kept professional football alive in Ireland, there wouldn’t be a league at all.

    • @TheLastAngryMan01
      @TheLastAngryMan01 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@davidpryle3935 Is that right? If it’s all down to natural talent and nothing else, how come Roy Keane was rejected by several English clubs and the national team as a youngster? Yet he played with distinction on the highest stage as a senior pro. He said himself that his desire to improve got him over the line.
      How come Iceland, with a population less than one-tenth of ours, has been performing better than us in recent years? Even Northern Ireland, with probably a pick of around 800k or so (when you factor in that most Nationalists play for us) have been getting closer to qualification than us.
      I’m not having a go at the LOI, but Ireland’s
      footballing infrastructure has been flagged as a problem on several occasions, going back to the Genesis report after the 2002 World Cup. The fact that most Irish football fans don’t support domestic soccer is also a big hindrance.

    As I mentioned before when the group was confirmed and I was saying that this is a tough task,you need a special performance against the Dutch and France but at the end of the day it’s a result business, we would like to know where does this team go?.How far could they go?. I knew we never go to beat France,they’re the world champions for a reason and also finalist in the World Cup last year and The Netherlands are a very good team,when we put new players in,I have to say they have given their all since they made their debuts and Hendrick and Doherty are still here which doesn’t make any sense to me and all of us,they hardly play for their clubs,the club manager must have a reason for why Doherty and Hendrick don’t select them.I agree with everyone we need a new fresh start and a new manager,we have given Stephen Kenny a chance to take the time to take us to the next level and unfortunately whatever reason it didn’t work,Stephen Kenny is a league of Ireland at his best,this job he’s taken is too big for him,Mick McCarthy should have stayed,Kenny should have carried on as under-21 manager and he did a fantastic job,beating Italy under 21 was special,the fai made a big mistake.
