Extra screaming around the pattern at Aurora (IL) Airport

  • As we taxied up to Runway 27, we recognized the cause for the delay. There was a Cessna 172, a T-6 Texan and an Extra 300 in the traffic pattern. The Extra was so fast, it was bypassing the Texan and the Cessna in the pattern. The tower was having a heck of a time building gaps in the landing sequence so that departures could take off.
We were number three for takeoff. Finally, the tower ordered the Extra to make a 360 turn on the downwind and extended the Cessna so we could get out.
There was really nothing else that the tower could have done. The Extra is so fast, it could rotate after doing a touch-and-go, complete a pattern and almost touch down before other aircraft, like our Piper Archer, could clear the end of the runway.
It was still an awesome flight to Lewis University Airport, where EAA Chapter 15 was providing a sumptuous buffet for their weekly cookout. Jody is one smooth aviator. Mackenzie Humphrey cleared us to land on Runway 27.
Check out EAA’s Facebook page for details on the Tuesday, June 11, cookout.
