- Join us on the Avalon Waterways Panorama for our first ever river cruise! We joined Avalon Panorama in Amsterdam and spent 7 nights making our way down to Basel on a Romantic Rhine river cruise.
In this episode we've arrived at Rudeshime (Rüdesheim am Rhein) where we take the Choo Choo train in to the centre, next to the Siegfrieds Mechanisches Musikkabinett (Mechanical musical instrument museum). We opted for a hike up to the The Niederwald monument.
After our hike back down, we try the Rüdesheimer coffee. All this was complimentary.
We then made our way back up to where we'd just hiked on the cable car. The Seilbahn Rudesheim Lift cost 10euro per person.
It was then time to head back to the ship as we were getting hungry!

I remember doing this on our cruise. I did the cable car up and walked down. Much more enjoyable for me ;) Beautiful scenery.

So funny seeing this. I live on the Rhine between Rüdesheim and Mainz and love it here. Germany is fab. You should do the cruise again in December to enjoy the Xmas markets - Rüdesheim's is lovely.

With river cruising, the port is definitely the ‘main event’ and with complimentary excursions you really get immersed in the places we visited.
I love Rudesheim, been twice and now fancy it again!

Glad you are enjoying it. The museum and the hike were taking place the same time so it was a choice. But with the ship not leaving until late you would have time to do one independently if you wanted to and we’re happy to walk back to the ship, which we did :)

Oh fab! We found this cruise a fabulous experience and more active then we expected. The adventure host had an excursion each day from hiking to cycling. Lots of fun
Amazing! What month did you travel?
This was around the last week of October last year. It was actually the final cruise they did before taking a November break where the ship gets parked for around 6 weeks and then they restart for pre Christmas cruises
You needed some Amaro digestif for after dinner.

We booked this cruise! How difficult was the hike? Could you do it at your own pace or does the group stay together? Thanks
The hike is done with your onboard activity host and they stop every few 100 yards to make sure everyone is ok. Its not a proper hike like you’d get in Norway etc.
You do not need to stay together and you can happily do your own thing. We split off from the group after the coffee to get the gondola up and down. If you start off with the guide, just ask them for directions and say you’ll happily go on you own from there 😀
