In lieu of the soap sheets, use a vegetable peeler to shave a bar of soap & place the chips in a small, reusable, zippered plastic pouch. Just take out a small shaving when your hands are dry before washing to avoid getting the shavings wet. Easy to use, costs nothing, and no plastic container to go into a landfill.

We are taking our third Amawaterways river cruise in December. We sailed twice on the Danube and this cruise will be on the Rhine. We always book the pre-cruise days in our departure city to see the sights; you also have some time to adjust to any jet lag you may have PLUS you have an extra 2-3 days IF your flight is delayed/cancelled. You will also get to know the cruise director and some of your fellow passengers prior to the cruise; we were even invited to sit at the Captain's Table the first night on the ship by the CD.

DO use the laundry on board (pack lighter!), it is very affordable but we do hand-wash our ExOfficio undies as well as my bras on the laundry line that can be found in most showers. I take Bronner’s Castile liquid soap in a mini bottle for any washing and as a stain remover. Taking interchangeable tops/bottoms and a couple scarves, as you suggest, works perfectly. Typically, you will be out walking/touring/wine tasting all day, so I keep it comfortable but not gym/lounge level. However, I do take 2 ‘nicer’ tops to wear to dinner on the first and last nights on the ship.

Pre/post hotels and the ships typically have robes and slippers in our rooms along with a blowdryer. But I bring my own very flat slippers, two pairs of shoes for excursions, and I break my travel rule and bring one nice pair of flats for dinners. I always spray my tennis shoes with waterproofing spray for those days it rains/snows to keep my feet dry.

You DO need an extension cord for a CPAP on some ships that were built prior to around 2015. The ship we are sailing in December DOES NOT have any outlets next to the bed. My husband keeps a 10’ extension cord (125-250v) in his CPAP bag when we travel internationally. Our first ship, built in 2019, not only had outlets next to the bed but it also had a US outlet in the room. The second ship only had the standard C outlets in the room but NONE next to the bed. I was told that Amawaterways typically keep some extension cords available for CPAP users and we were able to borrow one of those.

Most river cruise companies use an audio system that is bluetooth friendly allowing you to pair your own earbuds, or in my husband’s case - hearing aides. So keep that in mind. I also have a flat with snaps leather ‘tray’ that I drop my room card, loose change, and jewelry into at the end of the day…easy pickup to go the next morning.

You may also want to pack one workout set as, on Ama, there is a small gym, a running track, and oftentimes yoga classes, available. A swimsuit for the pool and, yes - even in the winter, the hot tub. We then use the clothesline in the bath to hand suits to dry or after we wash our workout wear. We LOVE seeing these river cities in a floating hotel!

I completely agree! I've done 2 with AmaWaterways and 3 with Uniworld and love love love river cruises. Except for underwear, I take only 3 of each item (cashmere turtlenecks, V-necks and long sleeved crew necks plus 3 pairs dark pants) in neutral colors plus colorful silk scarves, but we always go in late autumn so layering sweaters is usually necessary. Another pair of black "evening pants" is enough with a few silk/satin shirts - the bottom half of you at night is usually under the table. I love the fact that river cruising is not as formal at night as some big-ship cruise lines, and I a going to seriously consider booking the pre-cruise extension for the reasons given!

I did a Viking River Cruise in December for the Christmas markets. Our cruise was from Amsterdam to Basel Switzerland. Would say about half the ports we had to take a bus to get to the markets. They did I noticed separated us by age groups on the bus. We were one of the younger passengers. So, we usually got the bus the furtherest from the ship. And if you don't like your bus you can go on another bus. Nobody is taking roll call. At each port they started off with a short walking tour. I was surprised on how much we saw. but It was very fast pace. We did about 2 ports a day most days. Usually, one port in the morning then, back on for lunch and another port in the afternoon/evening. To be honest I was disappointed in the limited time we had in each town. There are towns I would love to visit again. Don't get me wrong I had a great trip. We did the post-cruise tour and I highly recommend. We spent 2 nights in Amsterdam before the cruise and 2 nights in Lucerne after the cruise. There is so much to see in Lucerne that we decided to do the Viking tour. Wow. We saw so much. There is no way I could have done that myself. The trip was great as we met a lot of nice people and became friends on facebook. The cheapest airfare for us was through Viking and we got premium economy. I did sign up for all the free tours. I think, next time I'll do more of the paid tours. The free tours are just walking tours which are great in the morning. But for the evening stop a paid tour would be nice. They have beer tasting, etc..

      @AC-el7lx ปีที่แล้ว +4

Same itinerary Tina, but I did a Scenic tour. I was a bit disappointed that we only visited one Christmas market at night, the others were during the day and therefore, no beautiful lights! Some markets we could only stay for an hour! It was a great introduction, but next year I'm going on my own schedule!

We are going on this cruise as well. I’m not sure how warm it will be on the riverboats, etc. I know to wear layers, but would love to hear from people who went this time of year.

Our cruise was from Dec 2 to 9th. We arrived in Amsterdam the morning of Nov 30th then left Lucerne/Zurich Dec 11th. Nov 30th and Dec 1st were quiet warm. Meaning you could walk around with just a coat. I had to take it off a few times when we were standing in the sun. So layering was a must those 2 days. After that the weather was very chilly. We decided to walk to the port from our hotel sight seeing along the way and it was very windy cold. It was nice since we were staying in Viking hotel our luggage was transported for us. You needed a good coat. I wore mostly knee high boots. I brought my hiking shoes for snow days and rain days. I brought a pair of ballet flats got around the shop. It did not rain much or snow. We had snow in one German port. Then, it was very snowy in Lucerne. So I’m not sure if we lucked out with the weather. I thought it was pleasant. The ship itself was fine temperature wise. I never felt cold on the ship itself.

I have been on three European river cruises and going on fourth in a week. Travel from UK so international advise I cannot doubt the following suggestions might help.
    Um
Cabins are a modest size so use a soft sided checkin suitcase to store under the bed. Rigid ones tend not to fit there.
Comfortable sensible trainers for off ship walks. Most European towns have cobbles. On board heeled shoes can be a disadvantage when using the stairs between decks .
Bring travel soap and quick drying travel clothes. This reduces quantity required!
Smart casual attire is normal. No shorts in the evening. Captains dinner usually leans to more smart but jacket or tie not required. Shirt not tee shirts. Ladies vary in levels of ‘ smart’ for this occasion.
If your cabin has a Varenna do not expect to use it when in dock as in busy ports the ships dock parallel to each other. We book a cabin with a juilliet balcony ( full height sliding window). This gives more space within the cabin .
Some ships have UK electric sockets others have European so check that out before.
A sun hat with a chin strap or tight fitting as blowy on deck when moving.

The Viking riverboats often have a retractable cord/line in the shower for hanging your hand washed items, but I still bring a couple inflatable hangars if I need to hand wash a shirt or top. They won’t dry on a regular hangers because the front and back stick together. For several items, I have the ships laundry do them.

Hello Laurie! Yes, European (TSA equivalent) rules are much tighter than ours, especially liquids. My tip is to use washing (machine) sheets instead of Tide liquid packets. I have used WashEZE on 14 cruises and they are great. Cut one sheet into rectangles (about the size of your hand soap sheets in the plastic case) for sink hand washing. Double-check the rules of the river cruise line for what is not allowed on their boats. (Wife of a DFW retired pilot)

Umbrellas are offered for River Boat passengers. The shampoo/shower soaps that are in the showers are harsh on colored hair as it stripped mine so something to consider. It might be o.k. now because I no longer color my hair. Wash cloths are available unlike some Hotels who do not offer them. I like a clean one A.M. and P.M. and they did not mind asking for two on River Cruises. Some frequent travelers have travel business cards made to exchange with new friends you meet. At Holiday time a little more dressy for the Captain's Dinner but generally casual these days. Just add some accessories and you will be dressed up enough. There are alternate food choices for all meals and a quick lunch buffet instead of sit down lunch so never confined to a menu. Special diets can be accommodated for ship meals but difficult in a restaurant serving a large group. One blanket tip divided at the end so no need to tip continuously during the cruise and included if bused to a site or tour in contract.

Great tips! We went on our first river cruise last year, Budapest to Amsterdam. The rooms comes with binoculars. Also, check the forbidden list first; I don’t believe personal hairdryers are allowed. My two additional tips are to bring smaller bills, dollar and fives, to tip your excursion guides (crew tips will be added to your room charge if you didn’t pay in advance) and to bring chapstick. The rooms are dry and the chapstick and your suggested eye drops will be needed.

I have white hair now too and use purple shampoo. Now I’ll have to squeeze it into 3.4 oz (100 ml) bottles for shampoo and conditioner EACH. That should last for eleven-fourteen days, which means I get to wash my hair three times, sparingly. Quelle bore. I’ve been using hotel shampoo to wash my clothes for the last forty years, works great. Now I can actually afford to have the river cruise launder my clothes for me, although once on a safari they turned my white shirt reddish bronze, so maybe do it myself.

Sockwell compression socks are also awesome - they have so many colors, patterns, styles (including some wide calf styles), and compression strengths, from solid neutral to loud patterns and colors.
And if you take any medications or supplements, check the laws for whatever country/ies you're going to because some require you to keep your meds in their original or prescription bottles, and some countries ban certain medications, even ones that are considered OTC in the U.S. (don't know which ban which, just know some ban some), and those might potentially require more documentation than just the prescription in order to bring them legally into the country.

I was surprised on how much we saw. It was very fast pace.

Not sure how the Magna compares to the Prima (been a few years since I've gone on their website), but I'm guessing it's probably just as nice. Do be aware that there's a chance they might keep your passport for the length of the cruise unless you need it for an outing (I guess it's so that customs/ports of entry/whatever they're called go faster - those of us who went on the outing that took us by land from Romania into Bulgaria got our passports back before we left because we needed them at customs at the border, then we turned them back in when the boat picked us up on the Bulgarian side) - I don't know if that was just our itinerary or if that's common across AMA, but something to be aware of that could potentially happen.

And as my family makes me carry my stuff I find I am more pickier about the weight. My tip is if you are going on a trip you have to carry stuff practice carrying the backpack or purse in your daily life that way there you know if the straps slip or the zipper doesn't work properly. Find an escalator and bring your backpack to see how it feels. Your luggage too sometimes it's to wide for the stairs or escalator. I also agree to use the laundry where you are traveling that way there the clothes are clean when you bring them home.

I have a cpap that I pack inside my smaller bag because I’m always after if they are going to make me check one of my bags. I travel with a carry on & a smaller bag like a backpack.

Hi, if you are going on a river cruise from the US, it does not count as luggage.

Oh boy! I wish you were going on the Viking cruise with my sister and me at the end of November. I think there are Christmas 🎄 markets by then .
I’m more anxious 😕 then excited at this point . 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

A word of caution I don't think curling irons are allowed on board. I seem to remember Viking cruise line stating they were fire hazards. 😢

Hmmm that can’t be right since so many people use them. I’ll check though. Thanks so much for watching.

@@wandrousvindella716 I bet you did! How magical. My friend said she went over there with a wealthy family and their daughter. The daughter met a guy and decided to stay so she got her stateroom to herself and had the best time too! Hi Laurie, I just returned from 10 days in London and used a lot of your travel tips which were so helpful. You’re a great source of information and I watched a lot of your videos as I hadn’t been to Europe in ages and it was my first post-Covid era flight. Very grateful to have found your videos as I felt very well prepared and had a great trip. Thank you for all you do.

One thing I brought with me on a cruise was clothes pins and a makeshift clothes line. If something gets wet or when I use the pool or spa I can dry my clothes easily. Sometimes I can use the hair dryer in a pinch but I dont really want to spend precious vaca time drying wet clothes.

a tip from a wet climate dweller: if it's warm and wet, wet rated sandals are a great alternative to waterproof shoes. sandals dry out much faster than if you accidentally overtop your shoes.
my wife has a dry sunscreen, that will help reduce the liquids.

Yes, they make you repack the liquids in their own ziplock bags. They make you take them out at each gate even though you’ve already been through the initial checkin in and scan.

Amaway does not allow your hair dryer or curling irons on board. No steamers or travel irons either, they also do not offer ironing as a service.

Last summer we went to Italy and contacted my airline about my cpap. They had me email their medical department. They responded within a few days and allowed me to carry an extra personal item (so I had my international size carry on suitcase , personal item and another smaller bag for my cpap). They added the extra allowance to my ticket. I had a window seat and put my personal item under the seat in front of me then I hung my jacket on the pull out knob and “hid” the cpap bag under that up against the wall of the plane. I was never questioned about that bag not being under the seat.
