Hobie 20 Solo Righting - First person view - GoPro Hero Cam

  • Right after I strapped on my helmet camera today I inadvertently capsized. I usually try not to as the hobie 20 is a little bit big for one person to turn over but a gust of wind caught me off guard. Using the "solo righting system" that extends the side stays, you can see it was fairly easy to get the boat back over.

I agree. Thanks for posting. I am learning the H16 also and getting tips on solo righting. The eye view is great and gives me a good sense of what to visualize when it happens - not if.

Extending the mast shroud like you did allows the hull to lean over more before the weight of the sails in water fight back. Thanks for posting this, I'm a new sailor with a Hobie 16 and want to learn to sail solo, part of that is learning to right her when she capsizes. I've capsized with a crew and we got it up alright. Putting weight on the front for a while before attempting to lift will help turn the boat into the wind and make things a little easier too.

Hey Thomas, what a great video. My H20 was un-rightable this week and i see that you have a system for relaxing the side stays and that does the trick? Could you describe HOW you made that work?

I own a Hobie 20 Miracle... But I never capsized. It was very interesting to see how you are righting up the cat. Interesting you opened the mast shroud..

water bag is way better and faster. In big wind a loose shroud can end up in dismasting your boat.

    Hi Thomas
Your righting video is very interesting. I would like to know how you extended the side stay? Perhaps a video on the set up or a description?
This could help a lot of sailors
    Cheers
    Bill

Way to go, much better than a water bag and you wont lose your mast in a big wind as the mast step rotates.

@redtwin1968 I'm 5'10" and weight 185. It takes some doing and I've been stuck before until someone had some mercy on me and helped out. I've gotten better at it though.

excellent video. Thank you. just out of curiosity, how much do you weigh when you're made this video?

I think it's just from the fisheye effect that the gopro has on close up objects, but I see what you mean.

christ get a water bag. that loosing the shroud in big wind must be fun.. If you loosen your rig like that in big wind you'll lose your mast

I tried this in 20 mph winds and I didn't lose the mast but the boat capsized immediately on the other side. Resulting in a full inversion with the mast all the way under. Thank God a boater with some sailing experience helped get the mast back to the surface and the boat back upright.
