Great video Joe...thanks for putting your bodies on the line...I was impressed how you rattled all those various capsizes off in quick succession...great commentary too 👍
The “bad tack” caught me last week in our club race. Poor communication with my crew and a little gust sent us for a swim...totally my fault. Your videos have helped me tremendously to improve my skills (2nd season owning a 16) and made racing much more enjoyable. Thank you! ⛵️
That was absolutely awesome and you guys did well to avoid paralysis for 30mins by bashing your hip on the front cross member by piling into a big oncoming wave and swinging into the cross member (brings back, not so fond memories !!) . Love your “dry capsizes” after the first dunking lol but nice educational vid all in all 👍
Wish I would have known earlier this week. Capsized my Hobie 18 for the first time ever while I was trapping out and as I was coming from the top my right knee came across the jib block. Well I took a slice down to the bone and it definitely made righting the boat a bit more challenging. The fellow on the boat had never been on a catamaran and I had not had to right the 18 before. The local fire department came out and gave my gapping wound a wrapping and eventually we sailed the boat back to shore and I made my way to the ER for a stitching. Can't wait to get back flying some hull. Nice video Joe.
I'm turning 63in in a few days and in just my 3rd year of sailing only two things I really want to do is sail on a tall ship and come to Wildwinds. See you in a year or two in the meantime keep up the great vids!
So I am late to the game here. Found this Channel from the Sam Holmes video you did. This was a great watch. As a former racer (Hobie 18A mostly with some open racing on a Super Cat) you did a great job. Having experienced most all of these myself. Great channel, glad I found it.
A good way to learn how to prevent something is deliberatly not preventing it (for a while)! I did this, not as courageous as these guys in a high speed sailing catamaran, but with my inline skates (free style quite advanced level, so I also had quite some speed) I deliberately fell in many different ways until I had a great sense of the limits. It was actually joyful, like I also see with these guys. Thanks for vid and courage!

Guys you really gave it all for us here watching from the sofa! Big thumbs up X u, and looking fw to experience some of these on the water -the safe way
Nice one. Reminded me of racing my 16 around Port Moresby harbour in Papua New Guinea. A mate had a close call taking out a newbie on the trapeze and capsizing. He had to push the guy down into the water to get him off the hook, then he popped straight out. That quick release hook would have been handy. Not sure they existed 20 years ago.
The front dive with my Prindle cat I loved to do. In high speed it was sometimes like a little bungee jump when we were in the trapez. My trainees always were surprised, when they find themselves in the water in front of the boat. 🤣👍
Excellent as usual. You need to do a flippy flippy. To show that in strong winds you need to jump on the hull that was in the water. If you’re standing solo on the bottom hull leaning backwards, you need to make a real effort to get onto the hull where your feet were so you can avoid a flippy flippy. If you have a crew member, they need to know to hold down the hull that’s in the water when the high hull starts coming down for sure. Great video.
"Are you not entertained?" LOL My favorite is definitely the pitchpole. That's how I lost my "V" on the wind indicator. Without that, I'm learning to see the threads better. I still have wind direction, but no reference for the zone.
I made this one by wind force 5. Which maneuvre did you use to do it deliberatly, in order for me to understand what I should have avoided. Thanks for considering. Would be interesting also for capsizing backwords.

Great stuff. You forgot one...the "Hobie salute", where you stuff a tack in decent wind and wave action. Boat sails backwards, trips on the rudders and goes over backwards, leaving the bows pointing to the sky. Remedy is to climb one hull and tip the boat over on her side and right normally.
I have an old Nacra 5.2. Closer to the tiger. Looking forward to seeing the tiger. Thank you for doing this. I seem to cut myself on the stays trying to protect my foam sail batons when I go over. I am only 61 kg.
Thanks heaps for posting this video Joe (not to mention all the others) I've recently brought a Nacra 5.8 and have yet to take it out. I definitely feel a bit more confident for when I do capsize and hopefully ways to avoid it. Happy to avoid the pitch-pole for as long as possible! Your videos are excellent thanks for taking one for the team. Vasiliki is definitely on our to do list.
As one 5.8 sailor to another Chris, don't be afraid to stand out on the daggerboards when righting the boat. The 5.8 is very solidly built and can take a lot of punishment. For my righting line, I've just got a large bowline that goes around the dolphin striker and comes up over the front beam to loop around the base of the mast step. That will create a very secure anchor point for the line when you come to use it. One idea that my local Nacra dealership (Brisbane Catamaran Centre, Australia) does with all their boats too is tie or splice a loop into the end of the righting line that is fed through a bit of vinyl tube which can give you a decent handhold when necessary and is big enough to get your foot into so you have an extra boost for getting back onto the trampoline.
Just bought and aqua cat 125. It's been years since I sailed my sister's sunfish or Crewed her thistle, so I'm trying to catch back up. Watched a few of your vids. This one earned you a subscribe. Absolutely well done mate. Cheers and happy sailing.
