For those who don’t have the option of pulling an engine more or less just for fun, I can’t recommend getting an oil analysis enough. When i first watched this video before bed last night, my immediate thoughts before even getting 2 mins into the video (after listening to the ticking/rattling noise) was that it was something to do with the rockers. But its good that you did a partial tear down just to visually inspect the engine as you did throw the whole car together rather quickly.
Helpful tip for anyone trying to remove a pull type release bearing so you can reinstall. Press down on the release bearing so it compresses into the pressure plate, then insert a flathead screwdriver in between the bearing and the pressure plate and twist and the bearing will be able to be removed. Then you can chuck it back on the gearbox input snout like a new one would go and reinstall.
Can't you just remove the pivot shaft from the fork and remove the fork from the bearing like normal on an STI 6spd? Then just remove the bearing from the pressure plate assembly once the motor is out?
@@jibbsey This is to remove the bearing after the engine is pulled out, not during. It means you can stick it back on the snout when the motor is reinstalled and use it like a new unit would go it.
I had a forged CP Piston EJ257 in my old 07 Legacy and that thing sounded like a diesel engine, that was with the required .003" piston to wall clearance, stock is .0015 IIRC. I ran it for nearly 100k before just retiring it for a rust free 06 Legacy. This time around I just went with a stock new short block when building it. I enjoy the quite engine as a daily and it really doesn't need the forged pistons for what I'm doing with it. :)

Within 6 weeks heard a knock, still had full oil pressure, drove fine, full compression, perfect plugs and no warnings on the Haltech. It was knocking when cold and would disappear when hot. Workshop decided to strip the motor down, found 4 corner scuffing on one of the pistons... the metal from the scuff accumalated and hardened at the bottm and the piston would hit it on start up. We went through of research/investigation as to why we had this issue, we found that the lower part of the bore wasnt machined completely to spec... We just honed the bore, machined to spec, the rest were fine, still the same spec as original, fresh set of pistons, everything covered under warranty and we were good. The whole situation took 6 months to rectify, took me a long time to regain faith in the car as i was scared to go through it again.

I've been thru the EJ journey now transitioning over to FA if this current motor in my Rexxie goes I may go the EZ route *but I'll continue to watch Marty suffer thru it first before I even attempt this swap in my car 😅
The thing I've noticed about forged pistons is that unless you're really putting it under load, they don't actually warm up and stop slapping. Like a daily driver with forged pistons, the slap will be more dependent on weather than coolant temp. So towing with forged pistons, that probably warmed them up nicely and were nice and quiet. You might find in future that cruising around unloaded they may slap again.
That oil pressure after the oil change looked awfully high.Don't know if that is intentional, or if something has blocked up part of the oil system - spun bearings, swarf in the galleries, etc. Too high a pressure always makes me think there's too little oil flow somewhere.
ive shimmed heads on fords here in the uk in the past and can be mind blowing sometimes working out what its got,how much gap there is and changing up as necc.fair play to u
This just cements my opinion that if expert shops can't built Subaru's to last... Rest of us have no chance! I'll stick to my 400whp 1jz and glance at the oil pressure if I hear it splutter... 😂🎉
That's sort of what I was thinking. It's been a while since I've seen the episode, but didn't like the country's premier Subaru shop build this engine?
I felt for you when you first heard that noise but having good people to help you diagnose the problem to achieve a cheaper in the long run compared to full tear down fix if you didn't have them awesome peeps
I don't get into the denial phase. If it sounds bad, i just test the oil (i check this every change), coolant and check my vibration recordings. If all three come out with issues. Then i have to take it apart. I take the engines apart (based on kms on road) anyways, but if those three warning lights pop, i have an issue. 9 times out of 10, it was justified and the 6 times i was wrong, it turned out to be a faulty oil check, loose "microphone" or a gasket installation issue. Given that i've never blown an engine under normal uses, i think it's a reasonable thing to do.
I can see the heartbreak in your face bud I've never seen you look so shattered you're normally the happiest positive guy around. Not at the finish yet but hope you had a Win, I'm not a subi fan boy I'm a golf fanboy lol hey Moog 😂 but still I know you are passionate about them and seeing you look sad just isn't right.
Maximum effort, but a smart decision when you've already put so much time, effort, and money into a project like this. Better safe than actually broken!
Marty please don’t forget when I helped to clean OG supergramps at the show and shine Subinats in 2015 at Wakefield park. You gave me a jumper I wear it when modding on cold days. Well done on the H6!
played the tappet game before mzr motor. i am still finding buckets in my garage randomly. thats what happenes when you drink and shim a head. i was luckey my rod knock turned out to be a fubared camshaft journal. new head and a set of race cams fixed what was diagnosed by multiple experianced mechanics to be rod knock!!!!! if i never fixed my valve cover leak i wouldnt of seen the scoring. did all the work myself and boom got another 6k miles out of that before it as sold.
As soon as I heard the noise, it sounded *exactly* like my old EJ25's valves, right now. One valve is out of lash, and it sounds like a lot of tappa tappa until it warms up. Whenever I pull it for the leaky rear main (third time in 3 months because i'm a doofus), it's getting another adjustment. It'll be fine. The bigger issue for me is gonna be the 4EAT slamming every time it downshifts to get up a hill or to pass. That's tiring. Gotta put in my spare valvebody, and rebuild the old one.
There is companies that do engine oil analysis that can give you a pretty clear answer on what type of material is shedding into oil. Ceramic, aluminum, etc. so you can help narrow down what is failing early
My daily Toyota had an engine with these shim under bucket valves. When it got to higher mileages it would make this awful knocking noise in the top end. Sometimes giving it some oil would quieten it down. Recently after 240,000 miles and 17 years the head gasket failed. I put a used engine in the car and stripped down the old one. The only wear I found was in the bores. Everything else inside the engine was immaculate including the top end. Maybe the buckets were noisy but there was no damage to them.
That noise is called Piston Slap and it varies depending the forged engine and piston used. It’s normal. That’s why forged engines need to be broken in very carefully and always heating/cooling it appropriately.
Am kind of surprised that this custom built engine had an issue with cam buckets. Not a criticism just a genuine surprise. Great that someone stepped in to help out. No actually outstanding.
Funny you ended up suspecting the valve clearances, I was joking to myself that it had the same issue my 2000 Kawasaki Ninja ZX9r had after rebuilding the top end. It started, was noisy, thought "it's fine, probably the CCT", gave it a little blip of the throttle and the noise got much worse. Turned out to be the only shim I didn't need to change had somehow dislodged from its place (didn't know these were shimless), so it must have been on top of the valve spring, and caused one of the collets to come out, luckily just the one. Although the valve had dropped slightly it seems there was no damage, I replaced the collets, put it back together and all has been fine since.
Wow, congrats man, looks like it's working beautiful now! Enjoy it. Btw, a definitive term like Six Cilinder Bucket Rocket would be nice, just as a crazy understatement for all the effort you put in and power it makes.

Very happy to see the Grovel happy and healthy again! Absolutely love this project and where it has come.
I've been thru the EJ journey now transitioning over to FA if this current motor in my Rexxie goes I may go the EZ route *but I'll continue to watch Marty suffer thru it first before I even attempt this swap in my car 😅
This is really interesting, I've never thought much about valve clearances with a bucket style OHC.
First style I ever done and it was on a isuzu impulse. Great design, low reciprocating weight and very compact
The frequency and consistent tone of it sounded like a valve clearance issue to me.
It sounds just like a Honda valve clearance click
The thing I've noticed about forged pistons is that unless you're really putting it under load, they don't actually warm up and stop slapping. Like a daily driver with forged pistons, the slap will be more dependent on weather than coolant temp. So towing with forged pistons, that probably warmed them up nicely and were nice and quiet. You might find in future that cruising around unloaded they may slap again.
You knows it bad that super gramps never have to had the engine replaced and it was on stock internals for the most part.😂😂
It's bittersweet saying I've been waiting for this episode, it was heartbreaking seeing the posts on the h6 builders group
That oil pressure after the oil change looked awfully high.Don't know if that is intentional, or if something has blocked up part of the oil system - spun bearings, swarf in the galleries, etc. Too high a pressure always makes me think there's too little oil flow somewhere.
Smeedia’s H6 swapped STi also runs at 90 psi oil pressure.
This is the first time in like a year that I have had a mighty car mods video put into my subscription box. I miss these videos!!
Piston slap from the forged internals? Get the oil analyzed maybe? Edit: a loose valve is a happy valve.
ive shimmed heads on fords here in the uk in the past and can be mind blowing sometimes working out what its got,how much gap there is and changing up as necc.fair play to u
@@ragweedmakesmesneeze done in UnZud if I remember correctly. So yea. Wonder how long it woulda lasted!
Glad it worked out for you. I have been down that road a few times. All the time, money and effort just to have to go through it again.
Are we going to get a visit from Uncle Rodney?
Rodney goes "Knock, Knock, Knock"
It's the Subaru experience.... SIGH
I felt for you when you first heard that noise but having good people to help you diagnose the problem to achieve a cheaper in the long run compared to full tear down fix if you didn't have them awesome peeps
I will never touch another Subaru in my life again😅
A wise decision.
Honestly not really as bad as people make it seem if you leave it stock and do proper maintenance.
@@v8_sami yes stock they are fine
But these are not to be messed with unless you have the time and the money😅
I don't get into the denial phase. If it sounds bad, i just test the oil (i check this every change), coolant and check my vibration recordings. If all three come out with issues. Then i have to take it apart. I take the engines apart (based on kms on road) anyways, but if those three warning lights pop, i have an issue. 9 times out of 10, it was justified and the 6 times i was wrong, it turned out to be a faulty oil check, loose "microphone" or a gasket installation issue. Given that i've never blown an engine under normal uses, i think it's a reasonable thing to do.
Hey Marty, is that what the RS is for? When the Levorg is broken?
I can see the heartbreak in your face bud I've never seen you look so shattered you're normally the happiest positive guy around. Not at the finish yet but hope you had a Win, I'm not a subi fan boy I'm a golf fanboy lol hey Moog 😂 but still I know you are passionate about them and seeing you look sad just isn't right.
That was a stressful episode but I'm really glad it had a happy ending!
Have you boys done a SVX yet? I don't recall that you have...🤨
svx are the only subary Id want. They look so good even 20years later. Kinda like the 2nd gen isuzu impulse
Maximum effort, but a smart decision when you've already put so much time, effort, and money into a project like this. Better safe than actually broken!
What's this about a supra on the hill?
Marty please don’t forget when I helped to clean OG supergramps at the show and shine Subinats in 2015 at Wakefield park. You gave me a jumper I wear it when modding on cold days. Well done on the H6!
I feel for you mate, most depressed you can get when you just want to drive your project
Marty congrats on getting the LeVorge back up and running. And in good shape. Enjoy the ride now. 😊
Everyone seems to knock on Subaru for their "poor engine reliability." Unfortunately, Subaru engines usually knock louder.
Good work holding down the fort Marty. Best of luck with the build/rebuild process.
played the tappet game before mzr motor. i am still finding buckets in my garage randomly. thats what happenes when you drink and shim a head. i was luckey my rod knock turned out to be a fubared camshaft journal. new head and a set of race cams fixed what was diagnosed by multiple experianced mechanics to be rod knock!!!!! if i never fixed my valve cover leak i wouldnt of seen the scoring. did all the work myself and boom got another 6k miles out of that before it as sold.
Nice to see you working in the home shed! Would be cool to get an update tour to see how it's changed 🙂
Man, I'm SO relieved that the Levorg is running!
The lump in my stomach when I saw that something was wrong with the engine ...
Love that it's a reasonably simple fix. But, wtf did Moog say at the end?
26 minutes in the lineup of rs turbos was me and both my cousins, gotta say they cleaned up pretty darn good
That red brumby though! 😝🤣
You guys held my interest right from the start. Really enjoying this one.
I would recommend getting a vacuum bleeder for coolingsystems, since you guys do it so often. It is well worth it to be sure you have no airpockets!
Dang. Good to see the mates came over to help.
I recently installed the same Xclutch on my Twincharged EJ. It’s really good!
Wow, congrats man, looks like it's working beautiful now!
Enjoy it.
Btw, a definitive term like Six Cilinder Bucket Rocket would be nice, just as a crazy understatement for all the effort you put in and power it makes.
