Revolutionising Warhammer Magic & Fantasy Chaos | Tuomas Pirinen in Conversation

- เผยแพร่เมื่อ 1 ต.ค. 2024
- During his time at Games Workshop Tuomas Pirinen worked closely with John Blanche to redesign Warhammer Fantasy for its 6th edition, taking it back to its more darkly fantastic roots. The team also created Mordheim, the enduring game of fantasy skirmish.
Amongst the many revolutionary changes ushered in by Tuomas were a redefinition of the forces of Chaos - no longer a mixed army of warriors, beastmen, and daemons, but instead 3 distinct chaotic hosts - as well as a complete overhaul of the magic system.
This is my conversation with Tuomas about those major changes to Chaos and Warhammer magic: the reasons for them and they way they were delivered.
I've previously spoken with Tuomas on the general development of Warhammer 6th edition and his master work, Mordheim, in an interview available exclusively to my Patrons - join now to gain access to that interview as well as other exclusive conversations and extended discussions with Rick Priestley and Gav Thorpe.

And now Tuomas Pirinen?! The community truly owes you a debt of gratitude.
Tbf Tuomas is so active in the community that if you make a pentagram with Mordheim miniatures on the points and say his name three times he'll materialize out of thin air.
I watched your Painting Phase interview, and it got me thinking. Many of the things that made Warhammer great in past decades is now gone, particularly the celebration of individual talent. That version of GW doesn't exist anymore, but I am grateful for your channel, which allows us to examine it today and appreciate how we got to where we are.
I found it very freeing to realize this, and to then cherish what I already have. Your wallet and time will be preserved.
HOW DO YOU ONLY HAVE 14K SUBSCRIBERS THAT IS A CRIME YOU NEED MORE
YARR!!
One of the finest codexes ever written imo. I had so much fun collecting and playing with chaos in this era. Thank you Tuomas (and Jordan for consistently bringing us these invaluable treasures!) ❤
Love from Finland, wonderful to see Tuomas getting his time in the "nostalgia spotlight"!
I can remember Tuomas's first articles in the Citadel Journal. That's the impact he had.
Im not sure this is actually true, of course, but I can remember thinking that he was the first guy at GW who actually cared about game balance and army construction.
And RIP to Brian Ansell
"Mad King Ansell"...our gratitude to his drive toward the game we fell in love with". ❤
Daemons should have been an interesting, unstable army that was powerful but difficult to use but they became not only the most boring but broke the game
Ironic that the books now are absurdly expensive and present a huge barrier to entry for players
Another great guest! Good questions Jordan, keep it up 👍
I want to play that new WW1 stuff right now!
Amazing interview, I love listening to Tuomas Pirinen's interview as you can feel the care, the passion, in his work. Truly inspirational, thank you again, Jordan, for this interview!
So those Lost and the Damned One & Two.. cost 1 million GBP to produce.. each!?> Pre digital printing too! No wonder they're so good!
Excellent interview and insight. Thanks for doing all this Jordan, the community appreciates it.
Wonderful!
The more interviews we get, and the more stories of those early days we hear really sheds light on why GW did some of the puzzling things they did that unfolded in the 80's and 90's. Its alomost like the efforts of Tuomas, R Priestly and the rest forced a successful saving throw that allowed GW to continue this business. We probably were on the edge of this game stuff never existing. I bet the like will never be seen again. Well done Jordan. If i could sculpt, I'd make a figure of you as an Honored Imperial Historian. 👍🙂❤️
Love all your interviews but this one was definitely a highlight! Tuomas' games and stories were a huge interspiration a brought a ton of joy
There's another spot on my bingo sheet sorted! Someone get the Perry Twins on the line!
Overly interesting! Great conversation with one of my all-favourite game designer
Awesome interview!
Like Toumas, I love Tzeentch as well! It's my favorite Chaos God by far, and I've just decided to build a Tzeentch themed Warriors Of Chaos army for The Old World. Not sure if it'll be very competitive. But it'll be a gorgeous sight on the tabletop, I hope.
Another solid one! Thanks for the share!!
Woop Tuomas, he’s pretty active in the community and always comes as everything you’d hope for in a contributor to a world you love.
" Sometimes you just want to kill everyone! " 😅 Great conversation, thank you!
Wish the designer of The Old World had the same ethos as Thomas when it came to the magic system 😏
I get the feeling that Jordan has become a bit of household name around the people who have helped create the hobby.
Keep up the good work Jordan.
Damn, you are on fire right now with all that you're doing here. Heartfelt thanks from another long bearded veteran. ❤
Yes❤ I waiting for your new game 🎯
It's a shame the TOW controversy about the Tomb Kings happened afte rmost of these interviews. I'd kill to hear answers from across the designers to the question "are the Tomb Kings evil?" - maybe you could message them all that single question and tell us their answers?
That was superb, thank you Jordan for focusing on other topics than just Mordheim and 6th edition as there's already multiple interviews with Tuomas out there on those topics. Great job on the questions as well, I think you got more interesting tidbits out of him than I've heard in those other interviews. Your passion and knowledge shines through the questions!
6E WHF was my first edition and so fun!
Another fantastically interesting interview, brilliant stuff.
An amazing interview, Tuomas was an awesome guest and as a lifelong fan of Chaos, this was especially dear to my heart. Malal be praised, and thank you Jordan!
AHHHHHH! I've been waiting for this day for a long time! I'm so happy you got him on
Another great interview, so interesting hearing the thoughts behind the games.
Excellent interview!
another great interview, really interesting, thanks again for this amazing content
He's the guy that ruined my Khorne and Slaanesh army of chaos warriors and demons. 😏 I had 7000 points invested in that army. Also not a fan of the changes he made to undead.
