The moment I needed to reload to kill that first dragon at kynesgrove again, because Delphine shot me through my throat while I was vampire lord, as soon as that dragon was slain, told me all I needed to know about Delphine. Don't trust her. She will kill you out of fear.
@@chrisironland7050 I mean, I'm pretty sure those are just game mechanics and the devs didn't think too hard about what would happen in these different scenarios, but it does make sense for her character. She acts out of paranoia and self-preservation (which may be justified, considering she's been on the run from the Thalmor for decades), seeing the Dragonborn as a chance to return to glory. Give Esbern credit, he's the Blade who wants to stop Alduin because it's the end of the world.
@@MuttonTheDragon I guess you're right. She does sound more desperate and relieved at the same time, like finding new hope or leader with renewed dragon blood powers. And since I went all Lord Dracula during brightest time of day, it would scare anybody :D Or my mods made it happen. Yeah, it most def did, since brawls turn into deathmatches 1 out of 3 times.

Moonlapse Vertigo The moment he spoke this I realised who he really was. He totally earned my trust with that speech. I badly wanted to kill the blades for even telling me to kill paarthamaux.
“We were made to dominate. The will to POWER is in our blood.” These words, for me, explain why the Dovahkiin always becomes the leader of whatever faction they choose.
>These words, for me, explain why the Dovahkiin always becomes the leader of whatever faction they choose. >leader of whatever faction they choose. >leader What game are YOU playing? The closest you ever get is "lead step-n-fetch".
Paarthurnax was literally created to spread evil and chaos. It was supposed to be his purpose and the reason for his existence. But he overcame his nature and went against his own kin for the good rest of the world. He changed himself. Meanwhile the blades' intentions were noble but they were a pale shadow of what they used to be. They were created to protect the world from dragons. But they lost sight of their objective. They became dragon hunters and didn't realise that they didn't need to kill every dovah. So much so that they refused to help the dragonborn in his quest. This means that they cared more about their hatred of dragons and their biases than they did about the fate of the world. And that's why in my opinion, paarthurnax is much better than the blades. He just wants peace. Blades want eradication of dragons and more than they want peace.
I actually liked the Blades back in Oblivion. They were on the right side, and I felt sorry for them over the loss of the Emperor (they really tried, but the Mythic Dawn outmaneuvered them). Here, in Skyrim...not so much. Perhaps a long period of time on the run, hiding from High Elf Gestapo, changes you for the worse.
In a line of dialogue from Esbern/Delphine when they talk about parthunaax, they mention how both the greybeard and the EMPEROR protected Parthunaax. So between some of the wisest and peaceful people in tamriel, and the leader of an Empire who's main goal is to aquire as much of tamriel as possible even through war, both deemed parthunaax worthy of being left alive
@@trisryan4161 And yet Delphine really thought she knew better than these people. That much fucking arrogance should have caused the entire game to hardcrash.
Paarthurnax did exactly what he was made to do, spread evil and chaos, as you say. Just not from the perspective of all races. He did well to overthrow Dragons and help Humans and Elves to end their tyranny. His words are true, never trust a Dovah. Kill them all or they will kill you. Few of them are good and helpful, but after their rolls are done and they can't help you in any other way, Dragonborn should kill them and absorb their Souls to prevent any future wars and disasters caused by Dragons. Last Dragonborn is meant to end the world of Dragons as is Alduin to end the world of Men and Mer.
@@Megasaurusify well he's right and wrong because like Paarthurnax said he did overcome his nature but his many warcrimes Were still unjustified, but that doesn't mean the blades intentions aren't good either, Their hatred for a long time ally to tamriel blinds them and basically breaks their oath to the dragonborn because he refuses to kill someone who's been much more helpful to you then the blades ever been
Actually he doesn't care about the world. He just thinks it doesn't deserve to be destroyed over and over by Alduin. But was willing to not do anything about it, if you remember correctly, you actually have to convince him to help you stop Alduin.
@@Ecliptor. that is also wrong once again, he just questioned why would the dragonborn want to stop him and then the dragonborn said that it's his destiny then he agreed to help, of course he was hesitant, because he was like a brother with Alduin before, and a very powerfull dragon... That's why the blades want Paarthurnax dead, it's his past actions. But of course he has overcome his evil nature through great effort, and he seeks to bring peace to the world, by teaching his ways to the dragons after the dragonborn "defeated" Alduin. There are times after it that some dragons clearly won't attack you, and they just fly by. Though he might look like he doesn't care, but he does, he just doesn't want to take part in wars and other evil things he doesn't wish to take parts in. You can easily figure it out by speaking to him and the greybeards. So whatever the greybeards say or how they act, there is Paarthurnax's ways got to do with it too... How the greybeards won't just hop in war, and use the power they had learnt from Paarthurnax, which is extremely powerfull in the lore.... Yeah.....
Arn'viir Hunkrahmaar they all still attacked even after Alduin's defeat and I had to use "Bend Will" so they would stop. Especially if that was an Elder Dragon!
Paarthurnax is so chill that he isn’t even mad that the blades want to kill him and completely understands their point of view. But delphine is just like “dRaGoN bAd”
The best thing is: he is constantly talking both in Dovah and in human language, often translating what he is saying to the protagonist. So, basically, he wants us to understand the language, this way helping us to better control the Thu'um. What a guy. Edit: Holy Moly 1,2 thousand people liked my comment. First time that happened. Man, Paarthunax is a great character, his philosophical views on evil are the ones that i adopted. When a fictional video game character is better than many "philosophers" out there lol.
I saw it as him occasionally slipping into the dragon tongue almost by accident - a by product of him seeing the Dovahkiin as a fellow dragon, and so sometimes forgets that you’re actually a mortal who doesn’t fully understand the language.
Could also be a thing about being multi-lingual. Sometimes i accidentally switch languages while talking and when i realize it i just switch back. Maybe it works on dragons the same way it works on people.
The demand that the Blades make to you shows that they do not understand what you are. Even Esbern, a scholar who understands more about the ancient history of the dragons and Dragonborn than just pretty much any human alive (aside from Miraak, of course) doesn't understand your nature. To Delphine you are simply a weapon, a blade to be pointed at dragons. She claims that the Blades serve the Dragonborn, but she doesn't actually believe it. To be a Dovahkiin is to truly have the soul of a dragon. To be Dovahkiin is to have the same will to dominate that all dragons have. The Dragonborn must struggle with his or her nature just as Paarthurnax has, as the dragon points out. In game you can resist or give in as you see fit, but the struggle is there regardless. A wolf isn't blamed for obeying its nature. That doesn't mean you will let it attack your flock of sheep, but it is only doing what it was made to do. Dragons are only doing what they were made to do, and long ago Paarthurnax was no different. But now he IS different. He has struggled for thousands of years against his nature, he has become something better. He taught humanity the Way of the Voice, helping them to fight back against his own kind. He teaches the Dragonborn what is necessary to battle Alduin and save the world *and* the souls of mortals after they die. And the Blades want you to kill him? Fuck that. I fus ro dahed Delphine and Esbern off a cliff and walked away, never to return. Let the Blades fade into history while I go talk with my dragon buddy.
Delphine was using the Dragonborn from the moment they met. She ONLY made a move because the Dragons returned. The Thalmor only looked for Esbern more because they thought he knew things about them. She manipulated things from day one, such as stealing the horn of Jurgan Windcaller knowing the Dragonborn would have to come and get it. Had the Dragons not reappeared when they did, she would've just simply stayed in hiding, probably til the day she died, Esbern might've been found and killed by the Thalmor possibly, and the Blades would've ended with them. It was only pure coincidence (at least in-universe that is) that things ended up working out for her at all. Dragons came back, as did a Dragonborn appearing with them, and from that she had her excuse to come out of hiding and strike back against the Thalmor. She had a Dragonborn at beck and call because she had things the Dragonborn needed, was able to set up a new base of operations, and declare herself the 'acting' Grandmaster of the reformed Blades. So by the end, by having the Dragonborn do all the hard work, she has essentially everything she wanted again without having to do anything all that difficult really. And so she has the utter GALL to order...ORDER the Dragonborn, the one person she is meant to be obeying, to kill Paarthurnax, merely because as 'dragon slayers' they and the Dragonborn should kill any and all dragons and all while cowardly hiding behind something so simply as saying that their 'oaths' as Blades now prevent them from helping the Dragonborn (also note that this little 'order' doesn't apply to Odahviing). As Arngeir says, "Bloodthirsty barbarians."
You already feel to dominate something. I mean you become the leader of every guild. the Companions, the Thieves Guild, the College of Winterhold and the Dark Brotherhood. It's no coincidence that you become the head master all the sudden. You have the dragon's soul, meaning you'll be in control of something. Hack I wouldn't be surprised if the last Dragonborn becomes High King of Skyrim. Look at Talos, he ruled all Tamriel and he is Dragonborn. For better or for worse. Most of the Emperors of the Empire has dragon's blood, willing to rule and dominate because it's in their nature till the last one died during the Oblivion crisis. Not saying you'll become bad, I mean look at Talos. Even the will to dominate and rule, he wanted to unite all Tamriel as one for a good thing. Not all dragons are bad and yet the Blades stupidity wants to kill them all and for what? They be no better then the damn Thalmor! If the Blades knew this, they eventually will kill you after you done all the dirty work for them.

He doesn't lie, and even in this speech flat out tells you that he more or less doesn't consider himself a dovah as others perceive, but the temptation is always there. They offer you very little, just help killing dragons, but expect you to kill a teacher and an ally for them to do so* At the end of it, the choice is this. Choosing creation and wisdom that is born from destruction. Or choosing destruction that was born from wisdom. I never choose Blades, because it's very clear that whatever they were, and however good their intentions are, that is long gone and they only seek the bloodiest aspect of it.
What hoops? Everything they do in the main quest is in direct advancement of the cause of SAVING THE WORLD. Bleak Falls Barrow: Vital information is hidden in a ruin. I'll get Farengar to find someone to get it for me. Blade in the Dark: I need to know you're dragonborn and I need to know I'm right about where the dragons are coming from. Here's almost everything I've learned so far about the threat. Diplomatic Immunity: From everything I know, this is my best guess as to who is behind it, and I'll get you the best opportunity I can to get in there safe. A Cornered Rat: Well that was a bust but you uncovered a great new lead that is in IMMEDIATE MORTAL PERIL. Alduin's Wall: Well we don't have everything we need to know, but we know where to find the missing pieces. We'll help you get to it. Season Unending: Let's convince people to stop fighting and save the world. Now compare the Greybeards. The Horn of Jurgen Windcaller: We don't need the horn, really, but it's a learning experience to fight draugr. The Throat of the World: You managed to learn things we already knew and didn't want you to know. We will never teach you words again, you have to find them in dungeons. Also go talk to a dragon. Season Unending: We don't want to get involved. Maybe the end of the world is a good thing. But you asked nicely. The Blades are proactive and purpose-driven, working with the best intelligence they have, which they share readily. The Greybeards and Paarthurnax create nothing, do nothing, and conceal more than they teach. Do I think there's a purpose served in killing Paarthurnax? No. Do I think the Blades make better allies than Paarthurnax? Hell yes.

That’s kind of the whole point The quests always appeared to be from the Dragonborn’s perspective, what you need to do next, as the Dragonborn So, if you want to do this without killing Paarthurnax, you have to actively choose to resist the instincts of your dragon blood, you have to resist what you want to do You have to resist killing Paarthurnax Which is the exact same thing he has done with you and other humans, he’s trained himself to resist his dragon blood, to resist his instincts to kill

To me, that was Odahviing hearing Paarthurnax and agreeing with him. Odahviing only obeys the Dragonborn because we beat the shit out of him and proved that we could do it again. He listens out of self preservation, not loyalty. If he were ever to gain the strength to challenge the Dragonborn, he would no longer have a reason to obey. Which is why it'd be wise not to trust him. Wise not to trust a dovah. But for now, and for any time in the near future, that doesnt seem likely to happen which is why you shouldn't mistrust one either. Because that leaves an opening for growth, for power. Odahviing is not Paarthurnax, he still embraces his will to dominate, and is able to achieve it through serving the Dragonborn, or fighting them.
Charles Martinet is one of my favorite VAs ever. To be able to act like this, and giving to characters like Mario and Luigi such defined personalities just through short sentences and expressions all the same is nothing short of genius.
Fuck the Blades. Killing Paarthunax shows how little faith some people have in each other when it comes to overcoming bad habits. I'd say Paarthunax is more trustworthy than most humanoids in Skyrim, let alone other dragon companions. Especially because he still displays a will to better himself.

Fuck off blades
Fun fact: all dragon names are from three words in the dragon language. Paarthanaax’s is paar-thur-nax or ambition-tyrrany-cruelty, which proves the long journey he took to overcome his evil nature
To me this whole quest was a debate about the concept of redemption in general, as such I in good conscience can never bring myself to kill him. Killing Paarthurnax in my view doesn't just say that the Dragons as a whole are incapable of redemption, and thus should all be killed, but also says that redemption as a whole is impossible. If the most vile and monstrous are incapable of redemption what does that say about the rest of us?
Even the most evil person is capable of goodness, and even the most good person is capable of evil. People like to believe their own lies, and stuff away the parts about themselves they don't like. But that is precisely how they sneak up on you, and why Paarthurnax had to mediate for centuries on a mountain to come to grips with it. If it were easy, people wouldn't spend their whole lives having to chase it.
Don't know if this is relevant or not, but a big part of Christianity says that one's deeds do not matter. The only way into heaven is through the J Man. Of course, you still need to make up for any evils you committed, but my point still stands. So, if we're going by the bible, the Mario Dragon is right. It WOULD be better to seek redemption than to simply know no evil. Because nobody is born good. Rather we learn to overcome our sins.
@@micahlindley7515 Indeed, this is the truth of the matter. Sure one must wholeheartedly repent but as you said, God does not care of your deeds nor works. Merely your belief and what IT means, if it is genuine or not and if you are willing to live by his rules over those of man (Give unto Caesar that which is Caesar's, give unto God that which is God's) then you are on the right track.
Parthuunax is beyond fiction. I use his words as motivation in my daily life. The nature quote still lingers in my head today and it’s made me a better person overall. This is after 10 years, and I’m an adult now.
That is what happens when a fictional character paraphrases the Bible. "There is no one righteous, not even one, for all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God." We all have an evil nature, no one is born good, and no one achieves good. That doesn't make the struggle to be better meaningless. What does Paarthurnax achieve, though? Sitting on a mountain contemplating the sky isn't good, it's laziness.
@@Ryvaken I imagine if God does become a character in Hazbin Hotel he needs to be a dragon with similarities to Paarthurnax with a similar voice but his own unique design.
And to that I can't help but say: "What is better? To trust someone because you believe on them, or because you want to believe in them with all your heart, despite any lingering doubt?". Seriously, that resumes how I feel about Paarthurnax.
The fact that he specifically tells you, "hey, this is what I'm born of, and I could snap any day," tells us that, even after millennia, Paary has not reached inner peace. He must fight against himself and could fail any time. But the fact he hasn't for this long shows that, while that threat is always present, Paar's mental fortitude and self-discipline will eventually win. There's a reason why the Graybeards are so immensely protective with him.

Kaido Vesternin Just realised what you meant...the original version is "What is better - to be born good, or to overcome your evil nature through great effort?"...the translation is the original comment...
it's better to be born good!!!!!! only the one who tries to overcome your evil nature knows the suffering that is it. Be born good it's better, always. But if it does not happens, you have a second choice. Simple like that.
But a person born good can be more easily tempted to evil because they haven't experienced the conequences of it. If you've overcome your evil nature, you'll be more compelled to stay reformed so your effort isn't for nothing.
Lucas Kazama the whole point of the quote, is that the latter is more admirable. A person who is "born good", are simply ruled by their instinct to be good.. It's not a concious effort. While overcoming your "evil nature" is an actual achievement and takes alot of self-awareness and intelligence. The effort of making you a better version of yourself. Parthurnaax also has the advantage of seeing both sides. Which makes him a powerful enemy against that evil. And arguably has a way better understanding of what it actually means to be "good"

Lucid::Dream no one is born good. They are born neutral with no influence or experience to shape their own psyche. We are basically all born into evil.
Someone born good is helpless. They don't have the teeth necessary to fight back when needed. They aren't 'good' they're just incapable of being harmful. More information on the psychology of Paarthurnax's question can be found in the Collected Works of C.G. Jung, Volume 9: Archetypes and the Collective Unconscious.
someone born good doesn't overcome any qualm nor undergo any philosophical pontification needed to grow or evolve as an individual. Therefore they've done nothing to truly be good, simply being good by nature is no true value or meaning, it is the decision to be good despite one's nature that truly is a sign of goodness because it requires recognizing the virtue of goodness itself.

@@benjaminkingsley-jones7832 both theories are valid I say
Could also be a thing about being multi-lingual. Sometimes i accidentally switch languages while talking and when i realize it i just switch back. Maybe it works on dragons the same way it works on people.
@@blackhoodie4170 The Dragonborn doesn't since when Alduin first talks to you he lectures you not knowing the language.
I like to think of it as the Dragonborn slowly being able to understand the language better
Evil Otto I shut them both with a mod and paarthanaux is alive and well. Wish I could've killed them both and ended the blades then and there.
Ahh the Blades. Possibly Tamriels biggest failures. First failing the Emperor then breaking their oath as the Dragonborns servants
I never killed the blades, mainly because that would still be giving into the dragon nature to dominate

If it were easy, people wouldn't spend their whole lives having to chase it.
in Buddhism "even demons can find enlightenment"
Don't know if this is relevant or not, but a big part of Christianity says that one's deeds do not matter. The only way into heaven is through the J Man.
Of course, you still need to make up for any evils you committed, but my point still stands.
So, if we're going by the bible, the Mario Dragon is right. It WOULD be better to seek redemption than to simply know no evil. Because nobody is born good. Rather we learn to overcome our sins.
@@micahlindley7515 Beautifully put!
*_And that's when i decided to live on the mountain with Paarthunax._*
Yes dohvamonk is best boy
@@Ryvaken
I imagine if God does become a character in Hazbin Hotel he needs to be a dragon with similarities to Paarthurnax with a similar voice but his own unique design.

Paarthurnax: I would not trust another dovah
Odahviing: roar!
You're hurting his feelings Paarthurnax!
And to that I can't help but say: "What is better? To trust someone because you believe on them, or because you want to believe in them with all your heart, despite any lingering doubt?". Seriously, that resumes how I feel about Paarthurnax.
That is very profound.
After I talked to Paarthurnax and he gave me this speech I made my decision to protect him and killed the blades.
You can kill them?
Fools are fine honey
I'm not 100% sure but I think you can after the main questline is finished.

Paarthurnax is one of my favorite characters in Skyrim. He shows that things such as love, trust and kindness are possible even among dragons.
God I could listen to him speak for hours
"I would not trust another dovah"
*dragon flies past*
*ROOOOAAAARRRRR*
I love it that as soon as Paarthurnax says, "I would not trust another dovah," a dragon roars behind him. Coincidence? I think not.
I'm sure the other Dragon is all like "U WOT M8!?!" in the background.
Odahwiing in the background: That hurt m8 !
Paathurnax: I would not trust another dovah.
Odaviing: well fuck you too old man

bit of a necro but i cam across you comment and just had to look for this pic.... i.redd.it/0nqc3z2t0qb61.jpg
Some days ago I've heard this for the first time in my gameplay, after reading, hearing and listening for the same saying for almost 10 years
I've never cried by a video-game, but that night I've cried like never before
I always thought that overcoming your evil nature was the best choice as you learn and gain knowledge from past mistakes and atrocities you committed, it may weaken your bond of trust with others but in the end you do gain intelligence and awareness, and possibly heal those weak and shattered bonds.
Damn, I'm sure even the blades would be swayed by that masterpiece of a speech. The dragon born should have brought Delphine to hear those words of wisdom.
Paarthunax for prez 2020.
It kinda sucks stuff like that can’t happen....
He'd probably do pretty good.
yessir
All that Delphine would say to him is 'we have nothing to talk about until you're dead.'
Paarthunax for president

that line is fucking amazing
it's better to be born good!!!!!!
only the one who tries to overcome your evil nature knows the suffering that is it.
And arguably has a way better understanding of what it actually means to be "good"
@@zhiracs It are your Parents, Circumstances, Area, and especially your will, what will happen to you. They are People, They faced her whole life shit, and dirt, going self, but are strong, and fighting for their good!

I wish Paarthurnax was a follower. Have your bro and mentor saunter around Skyrim with you while you kick the Blades' ass and might even have the ability to turn the remaining dovah to your side.
Douglas Murphy well, he is a LV10 Dragon... he is not fitting for fighting, not anymore at least. And it would be against the Way of the Voice, as he should only use it when necessary, for peace, or something like that :v
Douglas Murphy I like Durneviir...
(I probably spelt that wrong)
I wish we had more dialogue with Paarthurnax. I love talking to him and learning things from him
I just want to hear Charles Martinet say “It’s-a me, Paarthurnax!”
Uh, you ok there Mario? You seem to have turned into a giant dragon!
I still can't believe this is Mario's voice too.
M.... Mario?
What is better- Completing a game to 100% by finishing every quest you get, or to overcome your completionist nature in defiance of bad writing?
Thank you Charles! Have a happy retirement.

i stg if the rest of the game was like paarthurnax’s dialogue this would be the best ES game, hands-down.
the blades are arrogant, and not even close to the power the Dovahkiin has. And Paarthurnax is cool and has an epic voice so protect him. Kill the blades if necessary.
You can kill the blades? I thought they were unkillable characters like most quest givers.
I killed Paarthurnax because my character hungered for power and The Way of the Voice held him back! So I sided with The Blades. If I was given the choice, not my character, I would have not killed him.
Snoop Doge We always have a choice. It's all a matter of what we choose.

I was at a panel featuring Charles Martinet earlier today, the way he at one point switched from Mario to this was unreal.

What is better: to be born good, or to overcome your evil nature through great effort?
It is better to be born good. However, it is more commendable to overcome an evil nature-that is the greater accomplishment.
What is better? Why does it matter which is "better"? Good is being done either way and this is not a competition. Indeed, each perspective/personality can learn from the other.
@@Nikotheleepic Sorry, but that's horsecrap. A truly good person doesn't care if someone is inherently kind or if they work to be kind; society/the world/the universe/etc benefits either way. This isn't a competition.
This was my most favorite speech in the entire game.
Paarthunax is like a father talking to his son of age.
You're still his son, but you've matured well enough to be a familiar; like a friend
easily the best character in the game, I wish he was used for more stuff, but probably paying for mario's voice actor would be too much for that
no I don't know bout you, but when Odahvinng got caught and Farengar(100% sure I spelled his name completely wrong) started asking him questions I thought "This guy needs to go talk to Paarthurnax"

The only time an NPC ever passed a speech check on me
One thing I'm surprised more people don't bring up is the fact that if you read the signs on the way up to High Hrothgar, it tells you that Paarthunax was the one who helped mortals gain the Voice to begin with. All this talk of change, and he's been a pal the entire time. Delphine can suck it.

“What is better - to be born good, or to overcome your evil nature through great effort?”
Such a deep and powerful line. It’s suck with me for years since the first time I heard it.
This is uncomfortably close to how it feels to have a Cluster B personality disorder. Like, it is probably a reasonable idea not to trust me given my track record and also my general core pathology, but I am definitely trying to "overcome my evil nature through great effort."
My friend by the Power of God , and the Love of the Son of God Jesus Christ, you can overcome. Believe with all your heart and HE will conquer the evil within you !
”For I know that nothing good dwells in me, that is, in my flesh. For I have the desire to do what is right, but not the ability to carry it out. For I do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not want is what I keep on doing. Now if I do what I do not want, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells within me. So I find it to be a law that when I want to do right, evil lies close at hand. For I delight in the law of God, in my inner being, but I see in my members another law waging war against the law of my mind and making me captive to the law of sin that dwells in my members. Wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death? Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, I myself serve the law of God with my mind, but with my flesh I serve the law of sin.“
Romans 7:18-25 ESV
