I wish this questline had more options:
    1. Lie about killing Paarthunax. (Not like they're ever getting up there to check.)
    2. Remind them that they work for you, not the other way around.
    3. Have Delphine follow you to "Paarthunax's body"... located at the sacrifice pole at the Shrine of Boethiah.

At the same time we give Paarthunax a chance to turn over a new leaf and maybe in the long run, the Blade would learn to put aside their hatred for dragon.

It is not about whether you are punished or not. It is about what you do to make up for any wrongdoings. Plus, for all extents and purposes, his students are people from that time, and they made no attempts to kill Paarthumux.
The only reason why the Blades in Skyrim want him dead is because they are sworn dragon hunters. The Blades in Oblivion were likely a more mild version. Plus, consider this, Tiber Septim was Dragonborn and met the Greybeards. He was the last Dragonborn before our character to do so.
The Septims were all Dragonborn, but they never met the Greybeards. The Blades are seen as a negative influence to the Dragonborn, and as seen from the actions of Tiber Septim and his kin's forgetting of their roots, they may not be inaccurate about that assumption.

The words of Arngeir cut deep in my soul

  • @doublea125
    @doublea125 2 ปีที่แล้ว +101

It's more unfair to Arngeir than to Paarthurnax. Paarth himself tells you why it is wise the Blades do not trust him. He will avoid his fate if he can, but understands why the sentence is being carried out, and does not blame you for doing so.
But Arngeir, he is the only of the Greybeards who is able to both Shout and temper his voice well enough to carry out simple conversations, rather than destroy you a la Black Bolt. He and many others before him were selected to be able to restrain his Voice, so that should a Dragonborn ever appear, they may be guided in the Way of the Voice. The Greybeards guided Talos of Atmora to his greater destiny, and Arngeir was hoping to guide you to yours. He sees it as nothing less than a literal blessing to be able to guide you.
But as you journey closer and closer to your destiny, you test the limits of the Way of the Voice, Arngeir's entire life. You return to Arngeir one day demanding that he teach you Dragonrend, which he prescribes as the single most evil of the Shouts. He becomes skeptical of your true intentions upon learning you have been communicating with the Blades, whom he likely knows have been trying to have Paarthurnax killed for centuries. In a way, the Greybeards have guarded him from the Akaviri. In light of all of this, Arngeir warns you that you may inadvertently become a tool to be used by the Blades (to which his claim has merit, as neither Delphine nor Esbern have ever seen what you have to offer past your ability to absorb the souls of slain dragons).
Despite his reluctance to allow you to stray towards a path that may lead to Paarthurnax's demise, he is reminded of his duties to guide you toward your destiny, not to determine it (which is an incredible juxtaposition to the Blades' doctrine). Arngeir once again finds himself torn between obeying his duty to guide you and adhering to the Way of the Voice when you ask if a council may be held in High Hrothgar. He voices his concern over inviting men of violence into their most sacred grounds of unfettered peace. Though he is compliant, he holds even more contempt for you, especially as he finds himself allowing the Blades to even set foot in his personal abode, let alone stay. No doubt the temptation to send them down the 7,000 steps the fast way was within him, and no doubt that urge grew more powerful as he (quiet likely) overhears Delphine give you your new orders upon adjournment of the meeting. And did I forget to mention that at the table is Jarl Ulfric Stormcloak, whom by the Way of the Voice has committed blasphemy in using the Thu'um to slay another being?
So you have fulfilled your destiny in ending the world-eater. And yet... despite all the aide that both he and Paarthurnax gave you, despite that his death brings nothing other than a misguided sense of retroactive punishment, you've allowed the Blades to carry out the legacy of those who created the Dragonrend shout; you have allowed the hatred of dragonkind that the Blades kept alive and well for centuries after the Dragon Wars ended to reach its penultimate conclusion and devour the very soul that allowed man to rise against its oppressors. By all rights, the Greybeards' should have "greeted you not as mortal, but as dovah." Time and time again you asked him to make exceptions to his tenets, and each time, he trusted you were doing the right thing, hoping it would all pay off in the end and you would be heralded as one of the greatest Dragonborn in history.
No. Instead you have shown him exactly why his initial skepticisms were to be trusted more than you. The Greybeards now regret ever bellowing your name from the Throat of the World, inviting you onto their sacred mountain, christening you as the Dragonborn, and opening their home to you. You didn't just end another dragon's life, you ended a way of living. That is the true murder.

To add insult to injury, he was still likely very upset at Ulfric. With that in mind, the letter doesn't have to be anonymous, or even a letter, as this one disturbingly nice and gullible thalmor sees you as a valuable snitch. It would make perfect sense if you befriended him after diplomatic immunity, could simply walk up to him and tattle on Delphine.

Is that how they thank Paarthurnax himself for his help? They could at least have considered that the way he listened to Kyne and aided men meant he did truly change, but no. Everything that matters to is the bad stuff he's done, fuck that at the end of the day Paarthurnax is the only reason the nords didn't get almost exterminated by the dov. On top of that, Esbern himself admits that Paarthurnax was also protected by the Emperors... and yet the Blades still served them as their personal bodyguard. If serving the Dragonborn Emperors didn't break the Blades' oath, how does serving the Last Dragonborn break Delphine and Esbern's oath? It seems like Esbern is only listening to Delphine because she is the only acting leader of the Blades, and like any organization, the leaders word is law. It is incredibly accurate to say that Delphine is an overconfident person. Not actually understanding how small she is in the eyes of a dragon. She wants to use The LBD as a secret weapon to the Dragons. That is the most obvious trait of any Tyrant. Use a power weapon to get what you want. As a dragonborn you have dragon blood and many of the same drives a dragon has. You share their lust for power and destruction. I think the canonical choices should be the worst possible ones you can make. When Parthurnax asks the question of which is better it's a question he wants you to ask about yourself. Can YOU overcome YOUR evil nature with great effort? Not within the story of Skyrim but maybe outside in the lore. We can only know once ES6 comes out.

I usually ditch the Blades straight after Alduin's Wall. Paarthurnax can point you towards Ohdaviing, so you don't need them at all after that quest. They can rot in their decrepit ruins as far as I care.

that is why i prefer the blades in Oblivion rather then in skyrim because the Oath of the blades is to Protect the emperor thats was during the septim Dynasty but now is all gone that is why i prefer to spare Paarthurnax either he was a Henchmen of Alduin past is the past what does matter is he simply repaying his did.

Out of all 66,000 lines of dialog recorded in Skyrim, I have most likely heard almost all of them. Except Arngeir's rage. I have never heard that dialog, because I have never, even in my most evil of playthroughs, killed Paarthurnax.

I never killed Paarthurnax. It just felt wrong. Now I'm shown that doing so removes the repeat quest that Arngeir can give you that has you hunt down words of power? Even more reason to ignore that quest.

Paarthurnax wasn't resurrected by Alduin, meaning that throughout all the previous Elder Scrolls games, he was chilling atop the Throat of the World, hidden from outsiders.

I'd like to think my bro Caius Cosades, the old, moon-sugar loving Blade, is rolling over in his grave over these two morons. Delphine is pretty much saying that people can't get better, that we can't make up for our past crimes, that we can't learn a better way to be and change ourselves. Of course Paarthurnax did evil things at first, it was all he knew as a dragon. He is the one, though, that one day looked at the things he and his kin were doing and said "This is wrong". He is the one who gave up the end of one of his horns (still missing to this day) so Jurgen Windcaller could use it. He's the one who taught people how to use the voice, and use it to defend themselves. He turned things around for both himself and the people he helped. Honestly, he reminds me so much of Vegeta from the Dragonball series. Vegeta starts off evil, killing off entire populations of residents on planets so the planets can be sold in a galactic market for money. Long story short, he ends up having to work with Earthlings to fight off an even greater evil and eventually starts to learn to trust others and work alongside them rather than trying to kill them, and in the long run becomes a better person. He did far worse things than Paarthurnax did, and he readily admits it and even regresses once, but he became one of the best defenders of the Earth and their universe.
