No. As I explained in the notes, I only had a clear shot of Brad Mehldau. I could have also showed you the back of the person sitting in front of me, or the back of the person to his right, but I didn't think TH-cam viewers would really appreciate that.
His singing voice is remarkable, and he isn't under-appreciated. He's widely regarded as the best mandolin player. Besides those things, I agree with you, he is amazing.
I agree but would go even further and replace “mandolin” with “musician”. He plays some Bach pieces that I play as a guitarist and I’m just in awe of his skills.
Wow... this dude is sick. I'm watching for the facial content. I guess when you play across from Thile you just have "resting jazz face" the whole time. LOL.
But hey. I do love brad dipping into one of his favorite wheelhouses and playing a country folk tune especially one written by Bob Dylan. He loves to do it but doesn’t permit himself the experience, at least in public, very often (though I guess these shows with Chris Thile to the contrary!). And I always love the opportunity to show how far jazz musicians can stretch. Aka, way further than anyone else. And that’s because jazz is a mentality, mindset, a way of approaching music, not a style like most think it is. Har har!
I saw them while they were here in knoxville. Only got one video and I could only see Chris. I plan to upload it soon. I will come back to let you know when it is up.
Well, music is indeed a listening endeavor. None of it- not one little drop of it- gets in through your eyeballs, in fact, whereas all of it enters the ears. Reminds me of that famous quote- a violinist with dinner is an insult to both the chef and the musician. They are entirely distinctive and unrelated sensual experiences and to try to enhance an auditory experience with an olfactory/taste experience betrays the lack of confidence for either one by the show runners. One thing at a time, I’m sure you’ll agree? Let yourself be stimulated by music, first and exclusively. You’ll get more out of it than if you sit and listen to music and try to eat snacks at the same time, for example. Anyway, this is all a very long winded way to say that yes!!- you’ve hit upon one of the key factors of enjoying and appreciating music and indeed all different kinds of art. Pray you keep up this newfound revelation!
I have heard Chris say that to him, physical movement during his playing/singing is completely unconscious -- it just happens. Many, many musicians "feel" the music in a physical way, not just vocal or playing. I doubt he is being self-indulgent, except in that he truly enjoys and 'gets inside' the music. Watch a musician who doesn't move a muscle or change their facial expression - it conveys a completely different experience.
What are you all talking about? The video I'm looking at only shows Brad Mehldau, and while that's a good thing to have, there's absolutely no footage of Chris Thile... Did the video get switched out after the comments were made about how great Thile is? Of course he is great, but this video doesn't include him... Bizarre.
:) oops, I sound just a WEE bit shrill. My apologies. Still, as evidence by Brad Mehldau's performance here, seeing is also a wonderful part, and it still seems a bit strange that there no video footage of Thile was included. Just saying...
Mark Aronszajn If you read the very brief note I included when I uploaded the video, you might understand why Mr. Thile isn't in the video. Just saying... :-) If I'd panned over you would have had a brilliant view of the back of a tall person's head. And no, the footage wasn't switched. People were just speaking from personal experience about how he looks when he plays.
SarahV, thank you for explaining. I'm forever trying to learn to anticipate that it might well have been I who overlooked something obvious, like missing your brief note. And anyway sorry again for the shrill tone, and thanks for the great video of this great performance... :)
Seem to be pretty much the same as in the bob dylan version but transposed to the key, meaning if you were playing this real folk style you'd capo the 7th fret. Regardless of that chords are: G - D - Em - Em - C - C - G - D "ain't no use..." G - D - Em - Em - A7/C# - D - D ain't no use... (it don't matter any how) G - G - G7 - G7 - C - C - A7/C# - A7/C# "when your rooster..." G - D - Em - C - G - D - G "you're the reason..." There's all manner of things you can do with the bass notes to approximate each chord but thats the harmony. Hope it helps!
This is what I'm hearing....could be wrong, but hey, Jazz. G D/F# Em Em/D C G/B D D G D/F# Em Em/D A/C# A/C# D D G G G7 G7 C C A7 A7 G B7 Em G Am D G G
I find both of their faces sort of annoying when they're soloing. Chris isn't as annoying when he's singing though. He stays pretty still and his face is more normal than when he's only playing.
Is it really that amazing though??? I mean, I like it a lot and I wouldn’t have anything negative to say about it unless people were just going nuts over it. Both of these fellas have better material they’ve put out, separately and together even. There’s a few points where they’re not harmonically on the same page, which is a major blow for me. If that had come together better it would’ve maybe been a B+ or A- instead of a B-.
philippe leygnac Right. This is a complete mystery in spite of the fact that I've explained it in the notes and in the comments about forty seven thousand times, because apparently Chris Thile fans can't read. I swear if I get one more of these comments I'm just going to delete the damn video... I really regret sharing it at this point.
i'm glad they didn't show chris thile. he's so annoying to look at with his spastic moves and faces and self-indulgent expressions. better heard than seen IMO. excellent take here
No. As I explained in the notes, I only had a clear shot of Brad Mehldau. I could have also showed you the back of the person sitting in front of me, or the back of the person to his right, but I didn't think TH-cam viewers would really appreciate that.
Chris Thile is probably the finest mandolin virtuoso alive. Very under appreciated. Passable singer as well!
Two perfect musicians that need to make an album together
Also, Chris' solo at 3:55 is unreal.
I hope you know they have actually made that album! :) It's wonderful.
my head just exploded with happiness.
That's what a G pedal does. Also works with Blackbird. :))
Thank you so much for capturing the great moments. Incredibly beautiful interactions and improvisation by two extremely talented musicians!!!
I love that you can statistically see in the progress bar that Brad's impossible phrase at 5:55 is why almost everyone is watching.
Wow... this dude is sick. I'm watching for the facial content. I guess when you play across from Thile you just have "resting jazz face" the whole time. LOL.
Wow. Wow. And wow again. I've listened to several performances of this by these two and every single one is mind blowing!
Absolutely outstanding collaboration
I've listened to this recording many times, wanted to say thanks for sharing.
Wow! Every note is perfect!
Holy shit, this is other worldly beautiful.
One Of The Best Live Concerts I Saw In Ludwigshafen 2 Days Ago
Chris Thile Is Genius !!!!!!!!............
My brain is all over the walls. That was incredible.
A beautiful song expressed in any genre will come out great if done by expert musicians. Thank you Bob D.
¡Qué maravilla!.....¡Qué suerte estar vivo para poder apreciar cositas como esta!
One of the first Dylan songs I learned on guitar (Peter Paul and Mary's version) - this version is awesome!
Stunningly brilliant. So creative and senuously musical. I can't enough of these two..
But hey. I do love brad dipping into one of his favorite wheelhouses and playing a country folk tune especially one written by Bob Dylan. I'm keep coming to this recording. Just awesome. Brad.... they should both record DUO CD! Brad, Chris PLEASE!
I would be grateful too! PLEASE DO!
they just released a single of them doing Gillian Welch's "Scarlet Town". Apparently the album is on the way.
Great, thank you!
I discovered this video 3 weeks ago and It's my 4th time here... great playing
These two plus Pat Metheny and Stuart Duncan are my musical fantasy.
Also, awesome crowd for digging Mehldau's solo at 5:57.
This is gonna be on their upcoming duet album THIS IS NOT A DRILL
That was absolutely brilliant.
There needs to be a love button for this. Thanks for taping and sharing.
masterpiece.
Waouh !
Tomorrow I have my exams and I feel stressed. A LOT !
But this song gives me hope and courage. :)

Chris is simply Chris!
I saw them while they were here in knoxville. Only got one video and I could only see Chris. I plan to upload it soon. I will come back to let you know when it is up.
@sarahv - just read your comment, and understand now :) thanks for recording this & sharing!
I could kiss you for recording this.
God, this is so good!
thanks for posting this!
Awesomeeeeeeeeee
5 people thought twice, many commenters didn't read the description, and Brad & Chris need to make a duo album yesterday.
Taylor Roberts it's coming January 27th! Yeeee
Oh my giggity aunt. This is exquisite.
and that's what matters!!
That's what music is all about :-)
feel like i'm watching magic happen right in front of my eyes. how is this even possible
Wow, Chris Thile looks great...
If this don't bring tears to your eyes...you're not a musician!
He's not wiggling around as much.
muito bom parabéns adoro o jazz apesar de tocar bossa nova ^^
I for one am very content with viewing my hero - Brad Mehldau. Call it Brad cam ;)
Damn I really wish they will make an album, goat rodeo session #2( /w brad mehldau)
Awesome
I cant wait to see Chris here in Athens :D
That song...I never heard a version I didn't like.
The Boys can jam...still coming back to their strong connection.
Mandolin & Piano virtuoso
Unbelievable.
Fantastic! Does anybody if there will tour together again?
I kind of like that the camera is stuck, it makes me listen more and look less.

Fucking phenomenal
eargasm
Look a little further there are other verisons of the same. I appreciate the talent at the keys.
This is so fantastic! Why don't they do an Album together? I would be the first one who buys it!
No you wouldn't.
damn, these guys are good!
fuck yes. the "fuck" is so necessary in this case
This is the first time I've ever clapped at my computer screen.
You sound like Tony Rice when you sing the first line in this song.
How are you supposed to listen to anything else after hearing this?
5:57.....WHAT?!
Amazing!
OMG - right?
What are you all talking about? The video I'm looking at only shows Brad Mehldau, and while that's a good thing to have, there's absolutely no footage of Chris Thile... You can't SEE him, no, but you can definitely hear him. Good enough for me.

It's almost like you're deaf and blind but can still see and hear.
Is there someone who knows the chords ? please
Seem to be pretty much the same as in the bob dylan version but transposed to the key, meaning if you were playing this real folk style you'd capo the 7th fret.

G - D - Em - Em - C - C - G - D

"you're the reason..."

Ricardo Grilli Thanks ! I try to make the "Mehldau's sound" lol I'm pianist.
Antoine Dumas Yeah man, I actually thought of that right after I wrote... Oh well! Happy playing!
This is what I'm hearing....could be wrong, but hey, Jazz.
G D/F# Em Em/D C G/B D D
G D/F# Em Em/D A/C# A/C# D D
G G G7 G7 C C A7 A7
G B7 Em G Am D G G
Great ! But where is Chris ?
claude j If only you'd read the description or any number of replies in the comments where I've been explaining it for the last five years or so...
I might be responsible for about 300+ of these views. They've got to cut an album!
Haha that walking bass around 6:00, shiiiit!
Hi
Jazz. 5:55 - 6:12
piano is singing,
soul is smiling.
oh, dear.
Meanwhile I dig his gesticulations!
Got Chris?
Really enjoyed this , but where is Chris?
Try reading the notes under the video 🙃
What an interesting video. It's like Chris Thile doesn't even exist.
5:55 Kids, this is your brain on drugs
I find both of their faces sort of annoying when they're soloing. Chris isn't as annoying when he's singing though. He stays pretty still and his face is more normal than when he's only playing.
굳이요.....!
are you fucking serious?

SarahV ...my yell out was inappropriate... I'm sorry! Thank's for your honesty
Well soundwise he is right there in front. Isn’t this what music is all about? 😉
i'm glad they didn't show chris thile. he's so annoying to look at with his spastic moves and faces and self-indulgent expressions. better heard than seen IMO. excellent take here
i was looking for jazz, this is ok, but kinda disapointed.
