This just put a big stupid grin on my face. One of my favourite Dylan songs covered by some of my favourite musicians with such love and kind energy. Wonderful.
Paused at 2:45 to add to our "MOE Best Bob Dylan Covers" playlist....ok, we're back and we've reached the conclusion that just about any song sounds great done in bluegrass style, especially any song by one of the great poets of our lifetime performed by such accomplished musicians. Well done.
Dylan's original song is absolutely brilliant. Chris' version has really transformed it. There's no attempt to imitate the greatest American songwriter - he just takes the bones of the song and recreates it.
I'd encountered the rest of the house band in various bluegrass things prior to Chris's PHC tenure, but I'm really grateful to this show for revealing to me the awesomeness of Ted Poor! A tasteful player with really fine control of the momentum of the song - love it.
I thought I’d heard the best on this but here comes a bad mandolin player who slayed it. If the earth stands, this song will stand with it at least a millennium! I just wonder how it will be performed in a hundred years from now.
Have you seen him ( as a kid with Nickel Creek ) perform "The Fox" ( on Austin City Limits, if memory serves, ) with a portion of "Subterranean Homesick Blues" thrown into the middle of the song?
I've been musician for about 30 years, now I'm 50 and found myself being a potter. In a documentary bout Jim Malone (Goldmark gallery, recommenended!!!)he explains,"I found out,I couldn't make pots by will,I have to create an atmosphere, where good pots can evolve."-This show is one of the greatest, sum it up and you'll know.
And so it is God (Thile) plays the mandolin....I just love this! Inspirational mando playing-I'm hoping to get there and be just like him (get'n ever so much closer!)
The thing about Dylan songs is that they make great covers. I can't think of a single Dylan song where I haven't heard at least one cover that wasn't a hundred times better than the original Dylan version. Brilliant songwriter, but I never thought he did credit to his own songs!
I'm rather fond of many of the original Dylan versions and have trouble coming up with a single cover of a Dylan song which is clearly better than the original version.
I would say that Subteranean Homesick Blues is rarely covered well. Not surprisingly Chris' cover of it from LFH 2018 is so magnificent that even Dylan might check the copyright to confirm he still owns it.
Because those who run the music industry as a whole are not interested in making art but interested in making money. If they only gave people the option things might be different.
While music produced for radio has become more and more slick with less creativity and musicianship, the independent market is allowing many people to share their talent. True artists with training, commitment and the passion to pursue the music more than the marketplace are out there in growing numbers.
Well, we could have done without the Jordanaires-like harmony vocals during the fiddle solo but, I guess, they wanted to give the other singer something to do.
Oh man when I thought I had heard every possible cover of this... Wonderful!!
Pretty awesome, right?!!? So good.
The rice brothers cover of this song is my favorite
Of Dylan's harmonious juxtaposition of mandolin, piano, guitar, violin and gentle toppings of drums elevate my soul.. Priceless!!
all those great musicians on stage are instantly elevated by brad's solo.

Lovely rendition. A very fine band. thnx
"Take one brad" and then this! Speechless! Also how much soul is in the "soul" in 3:14 ? Awesome
too much!
So different but still pumping it out and love

It sure is hard as heck to not REALLY enjoy Ted's groove on this piece. My only complaint is that there wasn't enough of it.
I thought I’d heard the best on this but here comes a bad mandolin player who slayed it. If the earth stands, this song will stand with it at least a millennium! I just wonder how it will be performed in a hundred years from now.
I just get so much joy from this. Brings tears to my eyes every time. Thank you.
Now that's how it's done!! Been searching every version of this song on TH-cam & there are some good & some bad but

Chris Thiel is the Jacob collier of the folk world

I love the original of this song. Dylan has a unique charm.
My daughter says everyone does Dylan better than Dylan.😊
YES
❤❤❤
Très fort les musiciens
ありがとう😺
brad meldau...
Mark Collins indeed
Such a chad. No memes about it?
This rendition is amazing. Almost as amazing at Brittany's boots. All of it outstanding.

When did Chris switch from blue chip picks???
Where can I buy this version?!?!?!?! Its so good!!!
Chris and Brad recorded it earlier this year! www.amazon.com/Chris-Thile-Brad-Mehldau/dp/B01MXFI2B4
Matt Knapp thanks man! You’re awesome!
anything with ted poor...
I have a question. Why is amazing music like this not as popular as the crap on the radio?
Because those who run the music industry as a whole are not interested in making art but interested in making money. If they only gave people the option things might be different.
For the same reason (pretty much) that Trumptard is now "president"...
most people like crap, and the industry knows it

We're the lucky ones.
Best
how to watch the full film?
I know Dylan wrote it, but this is a Jerry Reed song, to me.
Whatcha think? My guess is Robert Zimmerman would greatly approve!
Did any notice she's playing a 5-string fiddle?
Brittany's made a habit of that for some time, as have Darol Anger, Kimber Ludiker and others. Mainly, I pay notice to what they play.

Ragtime (entree intended)
Second!
I usually love but this rendition and arrangement is tooooo cheeeeesssseeeey.
Well, we could have done without the Jordanaires-like harmony vocals during the fiddle solo but, I guess, they wanted to give the other singer something to do.
Just a reminder that the Trump/Russian collusion was factually proven to be a hoax. Great song though 😂
Not for want of trying though.
It's supposed to be a wistful song, not just a vehicle for them to do their schtick.
上手だけど優等生っぽくて面白くない。
