I would love to get inside his head just for a few minutes to see what his thought processes are! I think he is one of the greatest musical talents of our day.
It’s a marvel of tone, speed, tone and execution on both their instruments. Chris is the best at his instrument look around and try to find someone with his ability. You can’t. It’s a honor to be living in a time where Christopher Thile is because a prodigy like him comes along so rarely. The GOAT
An instrument that retains the soul of a great maker, the souls of great musicians plainly presented, the souls of two very different, passionate composers, it makes my bloody head spin. I sometimes think that bearing witness to something that's both great and small like this is the best and highest purpose my life can have. Everything else is just paying bills. Thanks, Mando Bros (a great and soulful store in Staten Island, btw).
grossjam Since you’ve spoke on the performance about as eloquently as one can, I’d like to just point out the older gentleman in the background taking video and using his phone screen like a viewfinder on a camera. Gave me a chuckle.
Few times I've seen a genius level of performance with an instrument. Perlman with Violin, Yo-yo ma with Cello. Thile has reached that "genius" level with mandolin.
Even though he is trying out the mandolin, the performance of the Bach (from BWV 1002) is remarkably fluid and exceptionally musical, and the tempo is what one expects on a modern violin, not a mandolin. The performance of Tennessee Waltz is exquisite, chamber music of the highest order.
having a nice cold glass of scotch, and listening to some of the best music I've ever heard in a while. You two guys are what make the music of this world worth listening to.
Look at those high end frets. They're like eight inch to 16th in. down to 32nd of an inch apart, and it looked like he was actually fretting some of them. Very nice tune. Well done. No surprise.
That came out more smarty-pants than I intended, thanks for taking it well. I really thought you were asking which player in the video was Chris Thile. [blush] Lots of great mandolin players in this town, an embarrassment of riches. I get out and see them as much as possible when this "earning a living" thing doesn't get in the way...
I've been listening to this video for about a year now. Can anyone point to a notation/tab to show what he's done here? I've tried repeatedly and failed to unpack most of my favourite parts in this video.
+b gilley yes he uses the g from the 74 and the e and a from the 75. But this wasn't his loar he was just trying it out. To me he sounds a little quieter and smoother than on his custom set, but maybe he had them string it up with the hybrid set before hand? That's why I'm asking.
No problem-being thin-skinned on TH-cam comments is just asking for a rage-stroke! But yeah, I meant which of the three mandos from the vido description he was playing. :^) And it's a shameless plug for sure, but you'd probably like the mandolin player on my new record pretty well if you click my name then check out the links in the right column...
alas in the history of music virtuosi like Thile or Sierra Hull have no lasting impact unless they produce something that touches the soul rather than only the educated musical intellect. the less contacr with the dirt if not filth of human existence the less an artist has to express or communicate with the rest of us. Sorry, I'll take Monroe, Wakefield, Rector, Everett Lilly, Jethro, Bobby Osborne, over the virtuosi any day of the week. soo glad none of them were home-schooled so that their souls and hearts wouldn't be tainted by the wicked dirty world the rest of us grew up in
That can be your opinion, but I wouldn't really call myself educated, with musical intellect, but I would take thile and hull over any of the others any day of the week, and they touch me alot more. So you cannot say for hat they will not leave impact, because as far as I'm concerned, they have made an impact that will stand the test of time
Chris Eldridge is absolutely one of the best acoustic guitarists alive, and Chris Thile is one of the best mandolinists to ever live.
Koof. I think I could listen to this rendition of Tennessee Waltz for the rest of my life and never get tired of it...
I would love to get inside his head just for a few minutes to see what his thought processes are! I think he is one of the greatest musical talents of our day.
Chris is a genius.
Tom E Muncey And he's never arrogant about it.
Wow, what a beautiful song.
Thank you to the camera man!!!!! Absolutely wonderful!
This is harder than it looks. And it looks hard!

Such an amazing display... I've listened to it like 50 times in the past few months. Thanks so much for posting these!
Beautiful share my friend! Fantastic guitar performance, nice song.
Have a wonderful day to you!
The last six minutes and thirty-nine seconds just realigned my soul.
wonderful guitarplaying

Chris Thile and "Critter" Eldridge as just amazing musicians!
Reminds me of watching Austin City Limits with my grandfather. Nostalgia in a bottle.
to play like that your instrument has to be your life. his instruments have nice life.

Chris the Great
Beautiful. Amazing technical skill and fluidity on both instruments. Have listened to this video many times and it is still incredibly impressive.
having a nice cold glass of scotch, and listening to some of the best music I've ever heard in a while. You two guys are what make the music of this world worth listening to.
All we need is Leonard Cohen and we have perfection.
I can sum this guy up in one word - MONSTER..
This is by far one of my favorite TH-cam videos. It's so delicate and beautiful I could listen to it all day. :)
Compnyment is quality too. Bravo!
This is a F'ing masterclass.
that guitar sounds excellent!
That's got to be one of my all time TH-cam faves.
This is the best.
Chris is just spectacular
the first 15 seconds could be the goal of a lifetime for 99.99% of players....
Cullons......quin parell!!!!...from Catalonia!!!!......good music!!!
Truly awesome prodigies, for sure!
Look at those high end frets. They're like eight inch to 16th in. down to 32nd of an inch apart, and it looked like he was actually fretting some of them. Very nice tune. Well done. No surprise.
A bluesy, soft moment for your day
Beautiful music.
so everything IS going to be OK. I knew it!
Holy cow. This guy is good.
Beautiful!!!
feels peaceful
This is just great.
crazy awesome!!
GREAT.
Incredible!
Sensational
haha just when you think you're making progress
If I hired a woodpecker and a centipede and gave them 100 years to practice they still couldn't play that intro!
Could not agree more :)
I bought one. It's all I use now!
The musical pieces are quite different But the performances are WOW.

youre the best in awhile. id say
Nice.
This is music.
i like the mandolin my brother plays it
Nice hat Eldridge.....
goin' to Staten Island to buy me a mandolin! :)
Right now there's some scary little kid sitting at his/her computer working this out and then....?
I agree. I also think the Bach may be bordering on sluggishness and is just the right tempo. In addition to being too fast.
3:00 til 4:08 ...
WHAT IS THIS WITCHCRAFT? WHY ARE YOU SO GOOD?
I've been listening to this video for about a year now. Can anyone point to a notation/tab to show what he's done here? I've tried repeatedly and failed to unpack most of my favourite parts in this video.
+CCDR07 the first 25 or so seconds are a sped up version of the Bach E- Major Prelude
+VPoki No it's more like the Double (Presto) following the Courante, in the B Minor Partita.
yuo
I haven't hear a better rendition of this since Patti Page!
LOL. Well played, Billy. (You're in Austin? See you around sometime!)
Does anyone know if this Loar was strung up with j75s or 74s?
G doesn't he use a hybrid combination of string gauges?
+b gilley yes he uses the g from the 74 and the e and a from the 75. But this wasn't his loar he was just trying it out. To me he sounds a little quieter and smoother than on his custom set, but maybe he had them string it up with the hybrid set before hand? That's why I'm asking.
G that makes sense. Yeah I doubt they strung it up special just for this video, though it's possible.
I'd quite strongly guess that it's a 1923-24 fern! =)
He is a mandolin player from what I've heard.
I want Chris to teach me how to play mandolin.
Just about eight years ago on the money ...
Which one is Thile playing in this video?
3:57? What IS this shit, Chris? How do you MAKE this stuff up? I...I just...just wow...
I didn't realize at first this was Chris Thile, and I was like. Shit. I'm giving up playing this dumb instrument.
+Νικόλαος יוסף I get discouraged and then I realize he is one in a generation. He's one of the best living musicians imo.
17 people don't like this because they wish they could play it.
As someone who is struggling with this instrument, I am relieved to see that even Chris Thile plays occasional bum notes (e.g., 0:41)
Can anybody tell me the first part of his play?
I wanna know the name of that superfast bach one.
I think it's the double presto from Bach's partita no 1 i B minor for solo violin. It's on the Bach album Chris made.
Lloyd loar #75316 Febuary 18th 1924

Thile's variations around 3:30 just...I can't even...ugh...
Isn't this guitar worth like 250,000 ?
best music ever and worst outfit ever all in one video
*Punch Brothers
I didn't know Jude Law was so multi-talented.
I used to not be impressed by Chris Thile. I did not like his voice and his mandolin playing was just flash.
I was just jealous. He is fantastic.
NO stairway to heaven
I liked the piece of Bach playing at the beginning better than the Tennessee Waltz
Me too.
By the way, do you know the name of the baroque piece?
T.S. Bachman It's the Double: Presto from Partita n°1 in B Minor for Solo Violin.
unby
The only way they could possibly sound better, would be if they were playing one of those awesome Keith Urban acoustics!! HA HA!
Can't tell if sarcastic, or actually serious.
