  • Former world heavyweight champion David Haye on why he struggles to put Mike Tyson in the top five greatest heavyweight boxers of all time.
He joined Mike Costello and Steve Bunce to rewatch the night in 1988 when a 21-year-old Tyson was at his most fearsome in the ring, defeating Michael Spinks in 91 seconds.

Don't get caught up in the hype, I'm a huge Tyson fan and his potential especially with cus at his side paired with a clear head is through the roof, but that's all it is pure speculation. We can only deal with what we saw and what we saw was Tyson losing to less than elite fighters and when he came against the other greats of his era he lost(Larry Holmes and was old so I don't count that as a win against a great). Tyson's a great boxer but anybody who puts in the top 5 boxers of all time doesn't know what he/she's talking about.

A lot of crap talked about Tyson. He came to the fore when the HW scene was at a low ebb in the post Larry Holmes period. He spent the 1980s beating up bums and Larry Holmes bridesmaids. His troubles with the law, his marriage, and his management have masked the truth that Tyson was never big enough to beat big talented fighters like Lewis and Bowe. His best wins just don't stack up: A dragged out of retirement Holmes, a blown up Spinks, and Razor ruddock?
Tyson's team knew he was vulnerable to the ambitious young blood that emerged in the 1990s. The list of fighters he avoided is stark: Bowe, Tua, Mercer, McCall, Witherspoon, Moorer, Vitali, and Morrison. He paid Lewis step aside money after a court ordered Tyson to fight Lewis rather than Bruce Seldon and only agreed to fight Lewis when he needed the pay day.

    • @Kaiserbill99
      @Kaiserbill99 4 ปีที่แล้ว

@UCfnLTQhSf_iwun0vRU4ocgw I did not say Tyson ducked those fighters. But unless you know something the rest of us don't, he did not fight any of these contenders either. Of those I listed I would give all of them a shot and only back Tyson to beat Morrison and Moorer. I don't suppose anyone gave Morrison much of a chance against Lewis either but they fought nevertheless. Both Lewis and Holyfield built up a decent resume of opponents but Tyson did not. Lewis beat Tyson, Holyfield, Ruddock, Tua, Vitali, Morrison, Mercer, and Rahman and "the next big things" like Grant and Briggs whereas once he had finished knocking over 1970s relics Tyson beat Ruddock and the likes of Bruno, and Bruce Seldon. Tyson's career best wins are a dragged out of retirement Larry Holmes, blown up LH Spinks, and Ruddock. He lost every potential career defining fight.
Wanting it to be true does not make it true and Tyson just does not stack up to the greats.....Ladies and Gentleman I rest my case.

@@chrisl7333 Nope. Been watching Tyson since 1985 and Ali even longer. You're dead wrong. Tyson got hit many times in the early years (some dirty tactics against him as well) but he was a warrior that kept coming forward. Never complained just got on with it. Boxers were afraid of him because he could hit hard, had lightning speed, ring awareness, agility, accuracy a killer instinct, and could soak up hard knockout shots for 12 rounds. That is true heart! I'm tired of desk top analysts who feed lies. We've all seen with our own eyes and lived through his dominance over top contenders. At his peak he owned the heavyweight division. He had no equal. Like Maradona, Tyson pissed away his talent with poor choices. I've been a fighter and over time fighting takes it's toll on you mentally, emotionally and physically. Even though he was a shot fighter he still went to war and got up after being knocked down many times in his final fights... More Heart! In the end he couldn't keep up the pace or the over the top lifestyle and should have retired early in his career. He became a different person in the ring towards the end. Tyson is being measured post peak and that is unfair. By the same measure Ali wouldn't make the top 5 and Roy Jones wouldn't be considered a legend. It is a stupid analysis. As for him being a rapist? The American Judicial system is always right...ask OJ.

How anyone can say Tyson is irrefutably the best is beyond me. He nigh-on killed 30-odd opponents and lost handily when he didn't. The fact that Tyson fought Holyfield and Lewis etc when he was past his best is almost entirely down to factors within Tyson's control.
You can argue that at his peak he would've beaten everyone but that's just conjecture. What you CAN do with confidence is consult his record and see that he lost fights he should've won and maybe would've won if he hadn't had such a short self-inflicted peak.
Clearly he was a troubled man who seems to have finally reached a position of personal comfort but you cannot theorise beyond this to state his predominance in retrospect.
In other words, Haye is at least partially correct.

How many losses did Tyson avenge for starters?. He was a talented physical specimen that destroyed his opponents at a freakishly young age. But as soon as he was found out, he lacked mental fortitude and professionalism required to adapt and grow. Make excuses regarding Cus, Rooney or Don but Mike's his own man and so is responsible for his own actions. There are atleast 5 Heavyweights better than Tyson if we look at records objectively. Mike knocked Buster down for 13 seconds with 1 shot when he was behind and really needed it.
But the ref didn't count buster Douglas out.
Mike Tyson got up on 9 against Douglas but got counted out.
In that fight he showed the ability to pull it out the bag when he was down on the scorecards, and also to get up when down and behind.
The "long count" also happened with Jack Dempsey and Gene Tunney so a bit of a case of history repeating itself.

@@lukaszm7378 Well that's not actually correct. I refer you to a Washington Post article entitled "Rule Is Ten Count, Not 10 seconds":
"Once the ref picks up the count, that's the official count," referee Mills Lane, who regularly works fights in Nevada, told the Associated Press.
Speaking of referee Octavio Meyran and his controversial count in the eighth round of the Mike Tyson-Buster Douglas fight in Tokyo, Lane said: "If {Meyran} erred, you can't penalize Douglas. He looks at the ref. He has no way of knowing anything else. He depends on the ref for the call. . . . If the ref was off, how can you penalize the fighter?"
When Meyran picked up the count on Douglas, he reportedly did so at "one" rather than "three" or "four," which is where the Tyson-Douglas timekeeper is said to have left off.
According to the rules of the New York and New Jersey boxing commissions, a knockout is not necessarily 10 seconds, but rather a count of 10.
"A 10-count is not done by a stopwatch," said Larry Hazzard, a former referee and now chairman of the New Jersey State Athletic Control Board. "That's splitting hairs. The question is, did the fighter beat the count and can he continue?"
So there you have it. Douglas was looking at the ref for the count and that is all that matters. He beat the count and was ready to continue. Tyson was not in a position to continue and the fight was stopped.
But irrespective of whether Douglas should have been counted out the fact remains that Tyson got beaten up by Buster Douglas who achieved little else in his career.

What people fail to recognise, or ignore, unfortunately enjoy hating on him. Tyson was 45-1 going into the Holyfield fight which is phenomenal when you consider Floyd was 50-0 , he was very close to that. He would of been 46-0 if he had Kevin Rooney in his corner & actually trained hard for that Douglas fight. He fought Holyfield after 3 years in jail & 4 years, 3 months of inactivity. It went 11 great rounds imo and Holyfield another great fighter win but although Holyfield was older, and people got hyped with Tyson upon his jail release. It was Tyson who had deteriorated worse as a fighter. Definitely unconditioned to do 12 good rounds & had lost a lot of the skills & sharpness that made him great. He was much more hittable by this point. Tyson deserves still to be top 5 imo. 1985-1990 stats - He became the youngest heavyweight champion ever aged just 20.
He became the first to unify all the belts in history.
The first heavyweight champion in a decade since the great Muhammad Ali to become undisputed heavyweight champion.
He beat the lineal heavyweight champion Spinks.
He made 10 title defences, 9 successful.
He beat faced 9 of the top 10 ranked heavyweight fighters during in his run.
He had accomplished all this by the age of 25 & 41-1 going into prison. That is phenomenal nobody has ever done that by the same age ever.
Sacking Kevin Rooney was the start of his downfall but what a career & anyone who says he was as good when he fought Holyfield etc... isn’t being impartial. I get your a huge Holyfield fan etc... I get it I am too I love Evander as a fighter he one of my favourite fighters ever but it’s clear looking back Tyson was a shell. By the time Lennox fought him... the wheels were completely off. It was a real shame seeing the mental breakdown of Tyson after his jail release. Today, he’d be in a much better place as mental health is talked about openly and he would of got the support and help at a young age which would of helped him immeasurably. But back in 1995 it was still rarely spoken openly about and he had to put on the ‘baddest of the the planet’ front. But in prefer to remember the 41-1 pre prison Tyson. The Berbick, Tucker, Holmes, Spinks, Thomas, Ruddock fights which define him. Mike Tyson is one of the greatest of all time and I for one loved watching him fight.

A great fighting career maybe not but a great fighter he was. He was making bad life choices at the age of 20 and his career fell apart. The fact he had achieved it all before 20 is incredible in itself. He is in better shape now than he was in the mid 90s

Well marciano had only an 8 year career before retiring with only 6 title defences & apart from 1 fight against ezzard Charles who was still a bit battle worn, the best fighters he fought like walcott, Louis etc... were over the hill fighters. He’s considered great. Tyson was 41-1 aged 25 going into prison. That’s phenomenal. 4 plus years of inactivity ruined him when but he still won 2 world titles again but never looked the same fighter. People talk like Tyson was finished when he fought douglas but that’s silly. He went on after that to beat Alex Stewart, an underrated fighter! He Beat foreman & got robbed, had two wars with Holyfield! He could punch! A peak Ruddock, Bruno, golota, Botha etc... still good wins despite not being at his best.,

Lol, if someone has rarely struggled in 95% of his fights, shouldn't that be a tribute to his greatness? Lewis went life and death with Ray Mercer (a fight which some people felt he lost), Bruno (someone Tyson steam rolled twice). Evander Holyfield had 2 brutal wars with Alex Stewart (Tyson destroyed Stewart in round 1), Holmes lost 2 fights against Spinks (Tyson destroyed spinks in 90 minutes).
He is held to a higher yard stick compared to other boxers

You are being very selective. Tyson did not fight any of: Vitali, Mercer, Morrison, Bowe, or Tua. Lewis fought and beat all of them bar Bowe who infamously refused to fight him. Holyfield beat Bowe. Lewis demolished Ruddock and Tyson was taken the distance. Lewis beat Holyfield and was robbed of a second victory. Tyson was stopped by Holyfield.
Tyson lost every meaningful fight and spent the 1980s beating up bums and 1970s relics.

my opinion prime Tyson vs. prime
Ali- Ali wins easily too fast, too slick, always hit harder than people gave him credit for.
Louis- Louis in a close fight. Plenty of power, better boxer, heart of a warrior. Tyson good enough boxer and has a punchers chance, though Lois was known to have survived some monstrous punchers.
Frazier- Frazier in a war. Bob and weave with vicious inside game before Tyson made it his own.
Dempsey- Tyson by relentless pressure is a vicious but relatively short fight.
Holmes- Tyson, but if Holmes uses his jab, one of the best of all time, and keeps Tyson at arms length, there could be an upset.
Holyfield- Holyfield was just more warrior, simple as that.

So what if Ali had not been banned from boxing in his peak years? Can you imagine how much BETTER the greatest would have been?
I just don't see Tyson living with any of these greats from the 70's as these were 15 round fighters who fought each other and fought regularly.
Every time Tyson had to dig deep he came up short against quality opponents (bearing in mind Douglas Holyfield and by then Lewis were not on the same caliber as your Ali's/Holmes,Frazer,Forman and nortons of this world).I was lucky enough to watch these and it is definitely not nostalgia!

After Muhammad Ali refused to fight Ken Norton in 1978 ,WBC strip belt and same years Larry Holmes starts dominating in WBC but same time there is another champion who holds WBA Title . all this years until 1983 were 2 heavyweight champions . but in 1983 new weight class was created IBF and than we had 3 heavyweight champions. after that Larry lost title against Spinks. so people who loved boxing wanted one champion and not crab what was happening at that time . *Mike Tyson* comes in boxing as *messiah* he beats WBC champion Trevor and wins WBC . than he beats WBA champion James Smith and wins WBA.than he beats IBF champion Tony Tucker. He holds all 3 Titles . 10 years of confusing was over . than he beats undefeated champion Spinks and wins The Ring heavyweight titles. he may was not fighting all time greats but he did the most you can do at the time were everyone thought there would not be one champion *One True Champion*. so yes he is in top 5 all time greats .

Tyson was one of the most exciting fighters we've had, I rarely agree with Haye. But to be objective, Tysons prime was just about 3 yrs. One can't write his loss to holyfield as just washed up tyson because Holyfield was past it as well (4yrs older than him). A true champion could face adversity and be consistent, Tyson didn't have that. But still a great fighter anyways, just not an all time great in my opinion 🤷🏽‍♂️

He knew how hard Wilder could punch and there was no way Fury should hunt that guy down 🤣🤣 spot on David. Now Tyson not in top 5 of heavyweights??? Laughable🤣

Frank Bruno fought Tyson twice and got his ass kicked thoroughly both times. Enough said. This idea that to be 'one of the greats' your whole career has to be great from top to bottom is nonsense. Look at Andre Agassi's first half of his tennis career. Look at the last half of Gazza's career. David Haye is too young to have been alive when Tyson was actually fighting. No boxer has ever carried that much financial 'marketing' prowess. Not even Ali himself. People were instinctively 'terrified' of Tyson. Even fans of him. The problem with Tyson was that D'amato only trained him 100% in close quarter fighting almost as a gimmick and never trained him to maintain the kind of stamina necessary to last plenty of rounds. I don't think that was somehow a 'talent' shortfall with Tyson. Close 'quick' combat was Tyson's strength. And after D'amato died, his head was all over the place as agents and promoters were stealing all of his money left and right. And then there was the whole 'rape' scandal. And it was mostly too late to change Tyson's boxing style at that point. David Haye has never fought a fighter like Tyson, end of. David Haye is the 'Rola Cola' of British boxers.

I'd put holyfeild lenniox Lewis Mohammed Ali a young George foreman a young Larry Holmes possibly sonny liston and maybe just maybe Joe Luis Rocky Marciano and Joe Frazier all ahead of Mike tyson. But I will admit because it was so many yrs ago Marciano and Joe louis and Frazier not sure how they would match up now days because of there small size. Also Tyson furry would be a tough match up for alot of past fighter he's so big with good boxing skill. Mike Tysons resume wasn't that great in terms of not beating any great fighters his best victory was probably against razor rudduck because he was a hard puncher and dangerous but the other great fighters beat him. Blame it on what u want but it's Tysons fault

In looking back at mike Tyson he’s easily won the heavyweight title against burbick at 20 years old but he’s won it so young he was a kid in mans body , then cus died and shook him to the core and at 25 years old had gone off the rails ( mainly cocaine ) but the mike from 20-25 would beat anyone IMO 🥊🥊🥊🥊🥊

I think Haye is right in as far as he goes but what he's not making any allowance for is that even before he fought Buster Douglas Tyson was already in decline. Once Tyson split with Rooney it was a long downward spiral. Tyson is my favourite fighter but I agree with Haye, he never showed the kind of fighting heart that we saw from Ali, or Frazier or Foreman. But then very few did.
So the question then is; are we judging Mike Tyson at his peak or over his career? The answer to that has a lot to do with where you would place Tyson in the all-time pantheon. Regardless of the answer he remains my all time favourite, along with Nigel Benn. They were both so exciting!

  • @mattg8600
    @mattg8600 4 ปีที่แล้ว

I agree with Haye and it’s fine if you don’t but if anyone puts Mike Tyson as the #1 best of all time then they don’t know about boxing. In his ‘prime’ Tyson beat an old Holmes, a natural light heavyweight Spinks and a couple other heavyweights like Berbick who were pretty standard world champions and nothing special. That is nowhere near enough to earn the #1 spot not top 5 in my books.

Watch round 8 if the Tyson v Ruddock rematch. Ruddock is close to knocking Tyson out, even the British commentary say how Tyson was near going down, but he holds on and fights back. A lot of fighters would have been knocked cold after a barrage like that from Ruddock. It’s not much but it is a small bit of proof Tyson could fight through a rough patch. Think it was that round but u see multiple tines Tyson was hurt in that fight but he remained determined. For Haye to say Tyson never faced any form Of adversity is a surprise, I thought he knew his stuff. This doesn’t mean I think Tyson was the best ever, but the proof is on tape, he could lose control of a fight and bring it back. As well as this, you can’t hold success against him either, a lot if the time he was too good to face adversity.

We grew up Tyson fans, and lived the ferocity of that era, and had Mike kept the discipline there's no doubt he'd have reigned supreme far longer. That said, re Tyson's losses, it was still Tyson's responsibility to bring the "best him" fully prepped, to a fight, which would have shut up the objectors and certainly avoided allot more of his losses that eventually followed, but he didn't.
Tbh, someone else here summed it up good by saying... the difference between maybe an Ali and a Tyson is that Ali could still beat the best of his time whilst "out" of his peak prime, which would have been before being stripped of his boxing licence..
Though, Luv him or hate him , there's no denying Tyson's indelible mark on the sport of boxing 🥊..

This isn't a controversial opinion. Tyson in the mid to late 80's was brilliant to watch but that doesn't make him a top five all-time great. Or even a top five all time Heavyweight. Tyson's biggest win was probably against a way past his best, about to retire Larry Holmes. And Holyfield smashed Tyson to bits. These are facts.

I think David haye doesnt think properly. Compare his best the best of his adversaries. And worst with worst of his adversaries. Not his worst with best of his adversaries. David is missing out a point. And u have to know that, it was probably meant for him to lose that way. And another thing is that why dont u speak of those games that Examples of Holifield lost totally and there was no come at all like u said for mike. A good fighter knows when he is not in position and will calm down and plan another fight. Its not the way u think. I bet u have never been in any fight boss. Dont use feelings because fighting is no joke.

Tyson was great in a watered down division for 3 years, went to jail for 3 and was a pretender for 10. Because of this he is not top 5 all time.. At his best he was as talented as any HW ever but he rounds out the bottom of the top 10 or begins the next 10.

People bitching and crying like haye has a personal agenda, when he’s bang on, remember guys just cause your a fan of someone it doesn’t mean everyone else has to regard them, Tyson was great in a weak stagnant division and then when he had to step up he lost, now I do agree when he was on point and focused he was a dangerous maybe even the best but we don’t know that, so what true boxing fans work with is a factual record and mikes alone doesn’t hold the much weight to the others
