Holy christ, Tyson is a goddamn legend. I may not have been alive when Mike was at his best, but looking back at who he was leaves me in awe of the man. Looking at my own struggles, hellish as they may be and have been, I feel like he proves I still have so much farther to go in life. Iron Mike feels like, to me at least, a representation of a spirit that refuses to fold against any odds, when some of us can’t seem to win, he proves its possible, sending opponents and struggles alike down again and again. I would be lying if I said a lot if what motivates me to keep going nowadays didn’t stem from Tyson’s warrior spirit. So on that note.. thanks Mike, you’ve given me a lot of help, more than you’ll ever know, and I really doubt I’m alone in that.

If Cus would have lived another 10 years I believe Tysons life would have been a different . Losing Cus broke Mike . Not only did he lose his farther figure , Cus kept him busy and in the right circles. But Mike has changed his outlook on life and learned from his mistakes and has become the man Cus would have been proud of.
His biggest problems after Cus died were Don King and Robin Givens. Bad influences on him for sure. King is a cancer and Givens just a gold-digger. Cus would have kept him on the straight and narrow. Mike ditched his team and fell for the Don King hype. Too bad. He may have been undefeated had Cus lived.
Lost Jim Jacobs also shortly after Cus, Bill Cayton was more business like and Kevin Rooney didn't have that touch that Cus had or even Teddy Atlas. It looks like Mike is in a good space, I'm glad he didn't go the way of Liston

Rooney was appointed by Cus before he died to take over as Mike’s trainer and Rooney was very good because Cus taught Kevin everything. Unfortunately, Don King got in Mike’s ear and Rooney was fired shortly after.

I remember seeing him on David Letterman years ago ( he was 19 at the time ) and Dave asked him what his plans were and Mike said in this soft spoken voice " to be the youngest heavy weight champion of the world ". Man, he wasn't kidding was he? How lucky were we to get to watch this kid grow into the baddest man on the planet?

@dannyx27 it's more than that. The fight game is mental. Wins and losses are often determined by the level of mental commitment. That is what makes fighters who are unpredictable dangerous. Which is why Cus didn't want Mike to take a fight with him; which version would show up?
THIS is an absolute textbook example of ......."It's not about how hard you can hit........It's about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward" Mike never stopped moving forward through all of those blows. IMO Mike is a LEGEND already, not many people achieve that in their own lifetime. I am about 3 years younger than Mike and I'm so glad that I got to see his whole career.. How many fighters do you know that Pay Per View had to add a resolution that if the fight didn't last a certain amount of time they would refund your money........LOL I remember the lead up to fights, getting the PPV ready and you better be sitting in front of the tv because it could likely be over quick............I think one time it was somewhere around 30 seconds in the first round and that was it.
Tyson got hit but it was like those punches weren't hard enough for him to be taken down. And that final punch was like "Ok you've just had enough fun, now it's my turn".. wonderful finish
Mike took a few good hits, but they weren't square hits as Tyson moved with them. What's incredible about that sequence was how Mike gauged his power, read his timing, laid out his plan mentally and then dodged the rapid fire, waiting for the split second when his face moved forward an inch and then put his lights out! The way he could that in such a minute period of time, under fire, was incredible.
Those counters of Tyson's were absolutely viscious! Not only were they fast, but he put so much momentum into them. I don't think any human being would have been able to get up after getting tagged with that left hook counter - that shit was superhuman!
Mike when motivated and focused was unstoppable in how he matured and gained experienced. Seeing him in his true prime really shows how different he was in his boxing before his life went spiraling down out of control

Too bad Another all his videos are full of mistakes. Almost right away, he makes a mistake anyone who had actually gone and watched his fights would know: they said he now ready for the big time and not a champion yet going into the Gross fight. But he had already won the WBA/WBC championship belts before the Gross fight and got the unified belt when he beat Berbick a few weeks after the Gross fight.
Gross was a nothingburger... losses to Jesse Ferguson, ANTHONY Witherspoon, no-not-the-Jack Johnson. Does nobody understand that lousy opponents make fighters look better than they are?

Mike tyson would probably not have been able to become a professional boxer without cus d amato. Mike, thank you terrible childhood, just didnt have enough wisdom/maturity to handle emotions, distractions and bad decisions. Thats why i think he could not become a good boxer on his own. I think, for example, that ali would have been able to become champion on his own( with any coach ). He just had it all. Everyone talks about Mikes power...but he had a tremendous defence in the form of body and head movement. He would crouch down and bob and weave often it looked like he was being tagged but he was already moving away from the shot leaving very little power in the shot. But constantly he was looking and waiting using his defence to make the other guy open and BAM!
Mike would pull all his power into his core keeping his elbows down and in with fists under his chin and turn himself in to protect himself until he would explode putting all his power in a 3 punch combo that knocked out 44 out of 48 total opponents...48 fights 44 knockouts...Thats incredible.
Watching these videos brings back so many memories from my childhood. Me and my whole family betting/guessing when he’d knock them out. Thanks for posting these.
That was absurd head movement by Iron Mike. He dodged nearly every shot Gross threw in that last flurry and then dropped the hammer on him with that lethal left hook.

Cus had Mike using a 300 pound punching bag that most other boxers refused to train on. It was used to train short heavyweights with limited reach but bring more crushing power in close proximity to their opponent. Marciano trained in the same scenario but had 3 more inches of reach than Mike had. Mike was eventually eased off the 300 pound bag as Cus thought Mike would develop microfractures in his hands. So on they went to training on the water bags. Simply amazing the tutelage by D’Amato in his final act.

I love watching all of Tysons armature and the beginning of Tysons pro fights. The commentators had no idea they was watching what was gonna be one of if not the best heavy weight fighters to ever set foot in the ring and i love hearing their reactions

That was pretty damn impressive id say. Mike was hell of a boxer. And he did that even with having little guidance as a boy growing up. He raised himself for god sakes. Of course theres gonna be some damage there. He did very well regardless.

4:38 Actually, wrong...Gross was not out for the count there, he got back up and fought for a few more seconds, and then was knocked down again. The ref didn't allow it to continue and Gross was pissed, he even shoved the ref for calling an end to the fight.

Tyson was like an enraged pit Bull in the early days. He was all muscle and extremely well-trained in brutalizing his opponents.

this has always been my favorite tyson fight because of the way he dodged them punches and unlashed that deadly one punch right on the chin. that for me is one of the greatest punches ever thrown in the heavyweight division. it sent shockwaves around the world

@dannyx27 it's more than that. The fight game is mental. Wins and losses are often determined by the level of mental commitment. That is what makes fighters who are unpredictable dangerous.
Which is why Cus didn't want Mike to take a fight with him; which version would show up?
THIS is an absolute textbook example of ......."It's not about how hard you can hit........It's about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward" Mike never stopped moving forward through all of those blows. IMO Mike is a LEGEND already, not many people achieve that in their own lifetime. I am about 3 years younger than Mike and I'm so glad that I got to see his whole career..
How many fighters do you know that Pay Per View had to add a resolution that if the fight didn't last a certain amount of time they would refund your money........LOL
I remember the lead up to fights, getting the PPV ready and you better be sitting in front of the tv because it could likely be over quick............I think one time it was somewhere around 30 seconds in the first round and that was it.

Tyson got hit but it was like those punches weren't hard enough for him to be taken down. And that final punch was like "Ok you've just had enough fun, now it's my turn".. wonderful finish
tyson was moving in the direction of the 1 or 2 punches that gross landed. zero damage done
Mike took a few good hits, but they weren't square hits as Tyson moved with them. What's incredible about that sequence was how Mike gauged his power, read his timing, laid out his plan mentally and then dodged the rapid fire, waiting for the split second when his face moved forward an inch and then put his lights out! The way he could that in such a minute period of time, under fire, was incredible.
That single punch put a smile on my face :D
Those counters of Tyson's were absolutely viscious! Not only were they fast, but he put so much momentum into them. I don't think any human being would have been able to get up after getting tagged with that left hook counter - that shit was superhuman!

Mike when motivated and focused was unstoppable in how he matured and gained experienced. Seeing him in his true prime really shows how different he was in his boxing before his life went spiraling down out of control

Too bad Another all his videos are full of mistakes. Almost right away, he makes a mistake anyone who had actually gone and watched his fights would know: they said he now ready for the big time and not a champion yet going into the Gross fight. But he had already won the WBA/WBC championship belts before the Gross fight and got the unified belt when he beat Berbick a few weeks after the Gross fight.

Mike, thank you terrible childhood, just didnt have enough wisdom/maturity to handle emotions, distractions and bad decisions.
Thats why i think he could not become a good boxer on his own.
I think, for example, that ali would have been able to become champion on his own( with any coach ). He just had it all. Thats why he is the greatest in my opinion
But in the right hands ( from cus d amato ) mike was like a living weapon controlled by a tactision who knew where to aim, when to shoot and how to win

Watching all these videos really underscores how Tyson was a far more technical fighter than he's widely given credit for today.
Everyone talks about Mikes power...but he had a tremendous defence in the form of body and head movement. He would crouch down and bob and weave often it looked like he was being tagged but he was already moving away from the shot leaving very little power in the shot. But constantly he was looking and waiting using his defence to make the other guy open and BAM!

Mike would pull all his power into his core keeping his elbows down and in with fists under his chin and turn himself in to protect himself until he would explode putting all his power in a 3 punch combo that knocked out 44 out of 48 total opponents...48 fights 44 knockouts...Thats incredible.

That was absurd head movement by Iron Mike. He dodged nearly every shot Gross threw in that last flurry and then dropped the hammer on him with that lethal left hook.
Yeah you would want a few bullets in that 357. Tyson is likely to go all Matrix on your ass.

Cus had Mike using a 300 pound punching bag that most other boxers refused to train on. It was used to train short heavyweights with limited reach but bring more crushing power in close proximity to their opponent. Marciano trained in the same scenario but had 3 more inches of reach than Mike had.
Mike was eventually eased off the 300 pound bag as Cus thought Mike would develop microfractures in his hands.
So on they went to training on the water bags. Simply amazing the tutelage by D’Amato in his final act.

He most certainly did. Watch the video. There's also footage of him calling his style impetuous. I agree that these aren't typical usages of the words, but they aren't incorrect, either.

Tyson's defense was stellar. Gross was no chump, but Mike made him whiff several times.
And even when he landed a couple of good shots in that barrage, Tyson never stopped moving and ducking.

That was pretty damn impressive id say. Mike was hell of a boxer. And he did that even with having little guidance as a boy growing up. He raised himself for god sakes. Of course theres gonna be some damage there. He did very well regardless.

It’s amazing how he just ate that uppercut and just barely reacted.. and then proceeded to duck and weave into his devastating hook to the head. What a great fight.
Man… the way Tyson dodged that barrage of punches was done so expertly and with composure. Other fighters would have panicked and gotten ko’ed. Had Tyson kept this original team of his throughout his entire career, he would have done way better.

Cus d'amato was a bright guy for sure. But I still believe that Tyson has a higher IQ and would have been brilliant if someone took care of him at school. His vocabulary and the manner in which he expresses himself is quite amazing for a kid from the streets.

4:38 Actually, wrong...Gross was not out for the count there, he got back up and fought for a few more seconds, and then was knocked down again. The ref didn't allow it to continue and Gross was pissed, he even shoved the ref for calling an end to the fight.
