We landed and cleared customs in the Port of Hilo, Hawaii AKA “Big Island”
For two weeks we have regained the spring in our step by resting, playing and replenishing our bellies on the Big Island.
For the most part, Big Island hasn’t been Westernised (in the ‘big corporations’ kind of way).
Roadside stalls selling fruit, smoothies and homemade treasures sprinkle the roadsides with an assortment of refreshments and smiling locals!
Thanks to everyone’s generosity, we’ve now squeezed on board 80kg of rice, 20kg of flour, 50 writing books, 75 crayons and 75 pencils for the locals of the South Pacific Islands!! :) WE CAN’T THANK YOU ENOUGH!!!
Armed with a couple of snorkels we either hitched, caught the bus, or graciously accepted lifts around the island from Haole Steve, who has been anchored next to us in Radio Bay for the duration of our stay.
We have crossed paths and shared meals with other boaters who are heading up towards Canada, swapping information as they follow our general path north, and as we follow their previous path by heading south westward into the South Pacific Ocean.
We should note that there is a very strong and proud culture here in Big Island, Hawaii…and every attempt is made to keep the Aloha spirit alive.
If you visit this place with a relaxed demeanour, bring positivity and smiles, then obviously you will be treated accordingly!!!

You kids are a new discovery of mine and I'm really enjoying the adventures. Having been to some of the same places but under different circumstances and 4 decades earlier I am celebrating your adventures as I live in my van enjoying my life as a free man. The bowl I smoked earlier just adds to the celebration. You be safe out there.

What we found out about our food stores on long passages is to not save anything. "If you always eat the best, then your always eating the best". It really does make you feel better!

u shoulda made one last stop ye here in howe sound. could solved the radar, but there is healthier stuff. A 5 watt SOTDMA and antenna with a flange mount on mast, 1 meter away from any other antenna. A 155 and 190mA transponding active-xs-dual band ant. to keep ships away. But with this setup VHF DSC and EPIRB are recommended for this vessel.

It took 31 day,a, then another 31 days to Tuvalu island!! 2 weeks to Vanuatu then another 2 weeks to Australia ....
Average 5 knots and max speed was 14.6!! The record was 220 miles in 24 hours which is around a 9 knot average!!!

I watch your sailing channel and one other. Most others I've seen " they" tend be somewhat arrogant and not very humble. You two aren't like that. 👍
Why are you not fishing while sailing
John Ward We had 3 lines out at varying lengths between Canada and Hawaii, catching only caught a couple of fish (a small yellowfin tuna in Canadian waters and a Mahi Mahi a couple of days out of Hawaii) Remember it’s 20,000ft deep out there, so there aren’t as many surface fish as people assume.
