My first racing experience was in the folk boat class in San Francisco Bay, the two old fellows who owned it told me when I asked why they needed a third crew to race," well," they said, " there's one to drive, one to trim the sails, and one to bail!"

My Dad owned Rockall a long time ago. He would love to know that she has been restored and is loved. Made me cry to watch this x
I don't know the old history but pretty sure he owned her when we were kids in the 80's (possibly late 70's)

Well done Nick, you have taken something old and neglected and turned it into something new, pristine and beautiful.
It reminded me of when David Green the CEO of UKSA at the time purchased the Gypsy Moth IV for a £1 and a bottle of Plymouth Gin and had her restored.
She sailed around the world again but I guess that around Britain is a good starting point for Swift!

    Hi Nick
Folkboat 520 was built by Brothers Martinsson, a well known yard, still in business, at the island of Orust at the Swedish west coast in 1959. The name recorded in the lists is "Maitresse".

Hi Nick, congratulations to a very nice FB! I learnt and built experience to sail keelboats on no 793 Talatta, slightly newer than yours. For your info there is a good web source of knowledge about this type that is run by Swedish FB association, I guess Mr Jarnekull checked that one out.
      folkbat.se/wordpress/folkbatsregisterstart/
is the URL to the actual register. Good luck with your future restoration and trips, round Britain sounds great!!!

I was brought to this video by a rogue algorithm and nearly fell out of my chair whilst watching it. My late father, Bill Richardson, and a friend and colleague of his, called Pip Kay, commissioned the building of a Folkboat - somewhere on the East Coast, I think - and owned and sailed her from new until they sold her on. Her name was Rockall. Is it possible that the sail number for Maitresse is a Scandinavian one? I notice that nowadays British Folkboats have a UK prefix, so I guess it's possible that there are two, if not more, Folkboats of different nationality bearing the sail number 520. If anyone is interested - whether Nick Ward and/or her present owner - in knowing more, I think there are a few contemporary photos at my Dad's house and I can have a look next time I am able to pay a visit to his wife. Ironically, Dad only died about six months ago, or I would have been able to ask him directly. His Rockall was certainly built in the late 50s or early 60s, which would tie in with Nick's theory as to her age. I don't remember her sail number, I'm afraid (I was very young at the time :)) but it may show up in a photo. Dad was a keen yachtsman and ocean racer, and owned numerous boats over the years; I'm sure he would have been delighted to see such a beautiful restoration job, whether this is his old boat or not.

Hi Nick , I grew up sailing in the Fal , Cornwall . My dad had a very similar but shorter boat to a folkboat , a Mistral built by Porthleven shipyard in the 60's . She was also clinker built m mahogany on oak, She was called Miranda and we regularly used to race for fun against a couple of local Folkboats. I think from memory the only time we could match them was in lighter airs when we could hoist our genny.
Well done for a wonderfull restoration , I hope she gives you much joy over the coming years .

My family used to own a folk boat in Finland and we used to race them in Talholmen bay. It was a fast and sturdy boat that would always surprise us about what it could do (we reached 14 knots in one amazing race). Her name was Teechee (wooden mast and boom). But after my mom got older in age she couldn't race such a demanding sailboat and had to sell her for a 38 foot X-yacht. But all I can say is, learn everything you can about trimming this boat and learning her limits because she is just a marvel of naval engineering. She's fast, she's strong and she will never fail you as long as you give her the love she deserves. That's one of the huge benefits of full keel sailboats, the more modern H-boats are hard pressed to even keep up with a folk boat if handled properly. You will never be disappointed with this boat except for the living space, but besides that, this is (I believe) the perfect boat design for any sailor, experienced or novice.

Wow ! You did a beautiful job. My father purchased a Folkboat in like 1965 in Los Angeles California and sailed her for many years to the Channel Islands off the California coast. She was a delight to sail, as a young boy this boat is what enticed me to fall in love with sailing and the sea. Oxnard CA has a lot of wind which this boat needed, She was heavy stiff and stable. Back then we had no radio, no engine, he did install a outboard eventually but that was ugly but safe.
Thank you for posting your boat ! you made my day.
