    Consider practicing walking heel toe or toe heel depending on which direction you are going. Smooth out your walk as much as possible. Also consider using your Electronic Viewfinder, I am not sure if you have to remove your glasses and adjust the diopter. That adds another point of contact. That will add a ton more stability. Also consider adding some counterweights to your shoulder rig. The weight can hang a bit behind your shoulder. This was taught to me by one of my OG film school teachers back in the day. He used to shoot a ton of docs and news in the 50's and 60's. Handheld and tripod were pretty much the only stabilizers they had back in the day. RIP Mr. Pitts.

      Great tips :) I find using view finders very hard as I can't see out of my right eye and most set ups are made to be on the right side. So getting a view finder on the left but being right handed is a hard thing ahaha. Also Easy rigs are not made for movement they are designed to take the weight of the camera and let you shoot for extender amount of times. Alot of ops use this on shoulder rigs too. Im not a fan of the counter weight system as anything longer then a minute take will make the camera op get tired very fast. Also any shoulder rig that needs counter weights is not set up correctly. the camera should sit back on your should providing the perfect balance. Great thoughts though.

    Bravo on this ACTUALLY showing us techniques and taking it to the field as well it's what brandon li does, i hate when guys just sit down and talk about things without actually showing us them doing it, i like being taken on the field and shown what is being done what settings are, how to hold , techniques with the specific devices...awesome work!

    thank you, this showed me how to achieve that indie film maker look which is handheld but not shaky and usable - the shoulder rig seems for me for now the best way to upgrade from the classic handheld way of shooting.

    Great comparisons! A further tip would be to do that walking section a bit longer, as the easy rig one only bounced a few times, and I was really looking forward to seeing how it bounced for a bit longer... but otherwise, absolutely fantastic - thank you very much - new subscriber! (y)

    You missed the best option! Shoulder rig + Easyrig ❤️

    • @JoshHodgman
      @JoshHodgman  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think if you are shooting from the shoulder then yes. However the easy rig allows you to be a little more mobile. I am also 6,2 and taller then most people I’m filming, so looking down at everyone isn’t always the angle I’m after.

    Question from a newbie: Is there a way to attach a gimbal like the DJI Ronin RS2 ( or something similar ) to a simpler and cheaper chest or shoulder harness/mount so I could walk/hike with it for a long time and not have to hold it just with my arms ? I am not a professional videographer so I can't afford anything like the Ready Rig. I just want stabilized video of walking and hiking on trails for my own enjoyment.

    • @JoshHodgman
      @JoshHodgman  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You could attach something like this to a Ronin however it will make your shot potentially more bouncy. You can buy special attachments or even whole rigs that take all the weight and have zero bounce, they just are very $$$$.

      AXLEGREASEframeset it's because its worse in the shake when walking, it gets exaggerated because the movement comes directly from the hip. Perfect for standing shots though
