You got a point and i totally agree with you but sometimes you really need that buttery smooth gimbal shots as a car videographer shooting hand held rarely works.
A monopod is a very useful tool if you quickly want to switch from immersive handheld to smooth. With a square baseplate you can even mimic dolly shots (from left to right) by mounting the camera 90 degrees off on the monopod.
Coming from a FX3 user and subscriber, your video came JUST IN TIME for me and my FX3. I shoot Cee-Lo Green's new videos and I look up to you man. Great job on EVERYTHING!
That's right! :) I use my gimbal just for specific shots, or when I need to keep some bigger and wider shot on concert for longer time. With handheld I can control every detail and follow the subject in 100% how I want to.
When I am trying to get shakey shots I find it helps to drink as much coffee as possible and hang around people who smoke right before a take. Having a camera assistants who have Parkinson's disease or seizures and let them handle the camera work for a while also helps. Nothing like having 'cinéma vérité' to get that real feel.
Just did music video recently with a heavier rock band and wanted a lot of handheld shots for this one to match how in your face the music was. Forgot how liberating it can feel to not be so tied down to gimbals and tripods. Think the end video is probably about 70% handheld shots. I like your 5 points of contact. Another method I recently tried was something Parker Wallbeck showed about having your entire right forearm under the whole length of the camera...almost like cradling a baby. It worked great! Especially when sporting a 70-20mm on there when it got a bit heavy. It is still 5 points of contact but just another way to use your muscles when one method starts to wear. Like to go back and forth in order to give you muscles breaks in a way.
@@DannyGevirtz Actually already finished editing it. Came out great. One of my favorite to date. Just waiting for the bands marketing team to decide on release date. Thanks!
Its nice to see somebody preaching for hand held! I almost always shoot handheld. The only real problem I've faced with that though is that my Sony a7iii isn't heavy enough. So buying a cage with attachments for the battery grip and handle bars etc helps to add more weight, and makes it way easier to do hand held movements with! I find adding handles to a cage actually makes it easier to hold the camera too!
Yo dude! Does your sony have internal stabilization? I know a lot of sonys do to make up for the lightness. But yeah nothing like having a big ass camera in your arms lolol. Thanks for alway commenting man youre the best!
@@DannyGevirtz Yeah it has insane inbuilt stabilisation! I just sometimes get those micro shakes from the camera being too light. But adding the weight removes that and I get great results. Great video Danny, these days we see a lot of gimbals used its great to see the other perspective something we tend to forget about it doesn't have to be super smooth depending on the shot. Just subscribed, thanks heaps mate. :)

I just shot an entire music video handheld with the c200 cuz - broke haha but I still need to go through the footy, hope it's not too shaky 🙈...love your videos btw!
Please tell what would you suggest for a very low height shots to minimize vibration or shaking when you have to put camera rig really low and hold it only with the top handle? I mean it may not be possible to use another hand, but just one. Thanks in advance!
Totally agree with every word! And also, if there is just a little too much shake, warp stabilizer can take out a lot of jitters without totally removing the handheld look :) at least that’s what I’ve been experimenting with lately ;)
I way prefer handheld. Think also because the videos that require handheld are always more interesting, music videos, sport etc. As always sick video man!
Hey Danny, thanks for making this videos for us. My question is - are you using stabilised lenses when you shoot handheld, or you go "raw" all the way with no lens stabilisation?
Glad you liked it man!! When i have a lens that has stabilization like my sigma art 24-70 ill use it but most of the time im shooting on lenses that don't have it and it's never an issue as long as the camera has enough weight.
If the camera has weight ther won't be an issue. It only looks awful on DSLRs and Mirrorless cams, cause no weight, lots of micro gitters. More weight less micro gitters.
Nice. As I was watching, I was thinking that this works with a heavy cinema camera but not with a small mirrorless and then got addressed it...haha. Good info. Nice looking videos too.
Great points! What's your opinion on using image stabilisation when shooting handheld? Do you prefer to use IS lenses or do you prefer the rawness of non stabilized glas?
Hey Martin! My sigma art 24-70 has IS. Its a very light and non intrusive stabilization so i love using it. But some lenses its too strong and it looks robotic. but if its very light I like to have it on.
Hi, amazing video, i'm suscribed and always watch your content, it helps me a lot, recently i've got a rig for my sony a7iii, and i was thinking about the settings, because, we always use 24p, but, considering the 180° rule, how do you resolve that?, i mean, we still using that rule even handled? or we have to increase the shutter speed?, Thanks a lot again, and grettings from Chile.
Great tips. I have recently shifted to more handheld work after making rig a bit heavier and definitely love it. Gimbals never do what you want so I try to only use them when the shot really calls for it.
I have a Sony a6300 & I’ve build a pretty sweet handheld rig. Most of the problem is that it’s just a lightweight camera, even when putting it on a gimbal.
I don't necessarily have the budget for a gimbal, I guess I'll be able to be good at handheld before I could even purchase a gimbal 😅 I do agree that handheld shots have a different vibe to it especially in some certain scenarios, it gives that perspective view rather than a smooth movement view.
So you use the c-200. I actually have a step below which is the c-100. I just recently got it and I like it a lot so far! Only thing is I can’t shoot 4K but that’s okay
Great video ! 👊 I was just wandering if you was shooting in 4k ?.. because I think to know it might be difficult with the fs5 rolling shutter... Does it work ?

Great video Danny, these days we see a lot of gimbals used its great to see the other perspective something we tend to forget about it doesn't have to be super smooth depending on the shot. Just subscribed, thanks heaps mate. :)
Thanks so much Peter! So glad to have you on board. Yeah some people just use gimbals to use them and it doesn't feel right sometimes.
would u share the way you rig?
Ping Chen hey! I have a small rig base plate with small rig rods. The battery plate and slider are wooden camera and the battery is a gold Mount Anton Bauer
Very inspiring 💡 will try to shoot a sport video completely handheld next time.
Glad you liked it! Yeah try it out! It's liberating!
you come across extremely authentic in your videos.
GREAT video man! Handheld shots definitely help in giving the audience that raw and realistic viewing experience!
Thanks I really agree with u ! Have you done a video on your rig handheld set up ?
I just shot an entire music video handheld with the c200 cuz - broke haha but I still need to go through the footy, hope it's not too shaky 🙈...love your videos btw!
Sean M. Thanks so much Sean!! I’m sure the video will turn out awesome!
@@DannyGevirtz update: checked out the footage... Blown away. I used a lens with IS. Can't wait to get this beauty online!
Thanks for watching Braeden! Glad you agree! I try to stay awake from warp stabilizer. It makes everything a little bit too jelly for me.
Nice. Got a shoulder rig?
Awesome vid Danny, your energy on this video is 🔥
NathanHoang thanks so much bro! Appreciate you watching so much!
Haha, the question I asked a few videos back has been answered by this one. Funny. Love your insights man!
I way prefer handheld. Think also because the videos that require handheld are always more interesting, music videos, sport etc. As always sick video man!
Dude such a great point. haha sports and music videos are my favorite things to shoot so that makes a lot of sense. Thanks man.
Hey Danny,
thanks for making this videos for us.
Michael Turner haha for sure. It’s doable with smaller cameras. Thanks for watching Michael!!
its been a year or so can you make a discussion about this again?
Can you tell me what make is that bottom plate you're using? Thanks
Hey Diego. Just a baseplate from smallrig it was relatively cheap
@@DannyGevirtz Thanks Danny, much appreciate it.
Do you use follow focus?
Do you shoot in MF threw this process of handheld or do you leave it in AF. Thank you again for your videos
Great tips. I have recently shifted to more handheld work after making rig a bit heavier and definitely love it. Gimbals never do what you want so I try to only use them when the shot really calls for it.
Absolutely man. Gimbals drive me insane. So freeing when you're handheld. Thanks man!
handheld vs shoulder?
I have a Sony a6300 & I’ve build a pretty sweet handheld rig. Most of the problem is that it’s just a lightweight camera, even when putting it on a gimbal.
Yep! Def tough with smaller cameras but its doable for sure!
You just gotta match the feeling, it's not about always steadycam, or always handheld, ir's about conveying the right emotion
Great video Danny. Very informative. Thanks
great content man! where can I find the boxing video? Lighting and shots look rad
Hey dude! Thank you! It was a part of a music video I shot. Check it out here th-cam.com/video/OgKN_YY70Sk/w-d-xo.html
I don't necessarily have the budget for a gimbal, I guess I'll be able to be good at handheld before I could even purchase a gimbal 😅
I do agree that handheld shots have a different vibe to it especially in some certain scenarios, it gives that perspective view rather than a smooth movement view.
okay awsome now how much money do i need to get this thing called...Handheld?
Little free.99 action!
So you use the c-200. I actually have a step below which is the c-100. I just recently got it and I like it a lot so far! Only thing is I can’t shoot 4K but that’s okay
But how can you shoot handheld with a tiny a7 and only a lens. I tried it and it looked awful...
hold it extra steady!
Great video ! 👊 I was just wandering if you was shooting in 4k ?.. because I think to know it might be difficult with the fs5 rolling shutter... Does it work ?
Thanks! Nah it doesn’t matter
Can you make a video of how you color correct your videos?? They’re dope!
Krisnare thanks so much man! There’s actually a basic one on my channel already!
Yeeew! Lemme check it out
