Most of them tell you to try and keep it quiet, which Tav didn't even try. A few pokes fun at you, and our best boy... Astarion tries to be there for you.
Astarion's reaction is very genuine and once again I have to give much kudos to Larian for their gentle and compassionate treatment of a character with 200 years of sexual trauma
i'm very impressed. all of the characters are written super well, and their baggage and responses to that baggage feel very real and very authentic. wall of text incoming: shadowheart is conflicted and confused because the memories of her abuse have been wiped, but the trauma still lingers; and without her memories, she attributes that suffering to shar to justify it, being that she was raised in a cult that values that suffering. a fair assumption. astarian craves power because he's been powerless and at other people's mercy for so long. makes sense. karlach would die for her freedom because she was sold out by those she trusted most, and thrown into literal hell. figures. gale wants redemption because he flew too close to the sun and ruined an incredible, LITERALLY divine life. understandable. wyll i haven't had in my party much, but afaik he wants to live up to the ideals of justice and compassion he was raised with, while battling his metaphorical inner demons, and one quite literal devil. lae'zel i also haven't really had in my party. but from what i can gather, she was raised to value authority unquestionably, and might to an extreme degree, but is now forced to reckon with the concept that the authority she devotes herself to does not care about her, and may not have good intentions at all.

Only the passage of time has dulled the pain from losing his autonomy, which is why he values the freeing nature of , well, nature above all else.
Everyone else: *teases or shames Tav over the situation, essentially calling them a degenerate* Astarion: *shows compassion and empathy as he knows a thing or two about his sexual agency being overwritten by someone else*
To be fair, the others don't seem to realise what's going on. The options were also to shake off the feelings, ignore the feelings, or publicly enjoy the pleasure, and Tav chose to enjoy it - there's quite a big difference between those options. Zero attempt was made to prevent everyone around you from that.

They all have trauma and baggage they need to work through during the story, but unlike most examples that simply romanticize mental illness, theirs actually feels like trauma, and their reactions and feelings towards that trauma feels uncannily real. A lesser game would have played into astarian’s flirty nature to make a joke. But larian has made it very clear they aren’t a studio that puts out lesser games.
I think it's more weird that people are laughing at Tav. They're basically going to be astrally molested for their entire life and everyone's like "ew stop jerking off in the town square" about it. It's something that I feel like you really don't need to have been a sex slave for 200 years to be sympathetic about, and yet none of the other companions seem to even remotely care that someone is basically having sex as you right at that second and you can feel it. Do you have a source regarding his age? Or it’s also someone who “translated” captions on his grave? In the other video they said he was ~60 which is also childish. The only question I have in that case is how he could be a magistrate if he was so very young?

I actually came to see if Wyll has any special voice lines as a fellow Warlock. Thought he might understand or recognize it. Only to be once more blown away by how sweet Astarion can be. The dramatic mask he wears to protect himself doesn’t crack often but when it does it shows some real insight.
Man, Karlach is savage with how simple her lines in this game can be. Yes, she's an incredibly optimistic person and must be protected as the fiery cinnamon roll she is, but she is absolutely NOT afraid to say that you're freaky if you begin getting freaky. From saying "Gross" to straight-up calling you "Degenerate" she's simply an amazing companion who won't abide you engaging in bullshit that goes off the deep end.
Astarion’s response was bittersweet but beautifully written and I’m happy Larian included it. I also always thought it was beautiful that if you slept with the drow twins or even one of them, they asked you tell them your limitations and then validates them/says they won’t do them. It was a nice thing to include. Love how Larian is very insightful and considerate of things like this.

But instead of it being treated seriously like with Astarion, Halsin claims it wasn't "all that bad," which really rubs me the wrong way. You're not missing much not keeping him around, his writing is pretty low quality and gross compared to the others.

Well technically you can choose not to sleep with the incubus and not give anything away, unlike Astarion's situation where he doesn't have a choice or backing.
opposite experience for me. i sort of liked him in early access when he barely had any content. i liked him at the beginning of the full release game when he barely had any content. by mid-act 3, he had grown so fucking insufferable that i permanently replaced him in my party after killing cazador (who needs a rogue when you have a silly barbarian to smash doors open for you?). i think the lack of any sort of remorse or empathy when he found the gur children is what finally did it for me. i know it technically wasn't your fault and that you're straight up racist, man, but can you at least try to comfort those poor kids? or be sad about it? instead of cracking a joke about how you didn't *seduce* them to kidnap them? smh. also, yeah, the racism towards the dnd roma people pissed me off to no extent. it's not "fantasy racism" if the "fantasy race" is just a normal human race based off of a real normal human race. he is also fantasy racist towards the short races too though lmao

I find it incredible how diverse the reactions are. The writers clearly realize just how fucked up it actually is, but most of the companions don't. That is some amazing writing. The only one that actually understand how fucked up it is, is the one that actually experienced it themself.
What I walked away with: Misnc is such a pure soul and Minthara's voice is a 10/10, it's a shame that recruiting her is... morally difficult without the mod

some of the dialogue options in this game are absolutely unhinged. told a goblin having her weird celebrity crush kissing my foot "made my gorge rise". an alternate option was to moan audibly. 10/10 game
Truly it’s a bit sad that I’m playing as a Ranger with Rogue tendencies. The more I see of Astarion playthroughs, the more I am absolutely appreciating his character. I just can’t keep bringing him along for his personality when I fulfill his role mechanically in the party. But seriously, what a compassionate dear.
There's an anecdote. Something about a guy making a wish to always come together with his wife, but he soon regretted making the wish as coming during fishing with his friends got troublesome.
Astarion's response shows that he understands that situation better than most. Minsc definitely means well (even if he did misread the moment entirely). I like both their perspectives on this
I know everyones all talking about how mature and supportive astarion is here and I agree 100%. But I just want to gush about Shadowheart and how pretty she is and I like her line too, and her voice is so amazing, and she sounds so giggly and happy here and I just love her ok lmao 😂
the amount of people in these comments surprised that Astarion is being sympathetic is wild. if you pay even an ounce of attention to the things he tells you about his backstory its pretty clear he would be. the same happens with the Dark Urge scenes. His main concern and motivation is to not lose his bodily autonomy again so yeah he would be concerned if his friend or lover just had a reaction to being regularly assaulted via magic by Haarlep/ being possessed.
I guess that I was lucky in that my first play through taking the “easy” route with Haarlep that I got Astarian’s response. Thoughtful, well written, no judgement, compassionate. Really makes me with that Larian was still involved in making BG4

She’s a wholesome girl. Basic, but wholesome. While people hate astarion he is actually quite complex and has lots of layers.

God I love Astarian. I really didn’t, at first, but I’ve never had a character grow on me like he did.
opposite experience for me. i sort of liked him in early access when he barely had any content. i liked him at the beginning of the full release game when he barely had any content. by mid-act 3, he had grown so fucking insufferable that i permanently replaced him in my party after killing cazador (who needs a rogue when you have a silly barbarian to smash doors open for you?).
i think the lack of any sort of remorse or empathy when he found the gur children is what finally did it for me. i know it technically wasn't your fault and that you're straight up racist, man, but can you at least try to comfort those poor kids? or be sad about it? instead of cracking a joke about how you didn't *seduce* them to kidnap them? smh. also, yeah, the racism towards the dnd roma people pissed me off to no extent. it's not "fantasy racism" if the "fantasy race" is just a normal human race based off of a real normal human race. he is also fantasy racist towards the short races too though lmao

Truly it’s a bit sad that I’m playing as a Ranger with Rogue tendencies. The more I see of Astarion playthroughs, the more I am absolutely appreciating his character. I just can’t keep bringing him along for his personality when I fulfill his role mechanically in the party. But seriously, what a compassionate dear.
Respec him with Withers! I turned my Astarion into a bard for a while, and then a monk/rogue/fighter. I am a ranger/rogue/fighter currently

the amount of people in these comments surprised that Astarion is being sympathetic is wild. if you pay even an ounce of attention to the things he tells you about his backstory its pretty clear he would be. the same happens with the Dark Urge scenes. His main concern and motivation is to not lose his bodily autonomy again so yeah he would be concerned if his friend or lover just had a reaction to being regularly assaulted via magic by Haarlep/ being possessed.
