Shawn's comment at 20:41 is an excellent example of why auto life jackets are a good idea. If you go in the drink in cold water you quickly lose the use of your arms hands and legs and are invariably unable to help yourself. Something that should be borne in mind when designing a casualty retrieval system.
I bet the warm shower was bliss.

Nothing more beautiful than crossing that strait in calm seas, not much worse when it gets nasty out there. If you get the tides right it can shave hours off the trip.

During my Vietnam days in the Navy, we occasionally returned to Bremerton... but before we did we had to drop all munitions off in a facility in the Hood canal. They also do some torpedo testing in the hood. I personally know of two SEALS who trained for cold water activities up here, I was their emergency support. You don't have to walk on ice in order to get the polar dip experience. I'm very impressed to see your gutsy New Year dip.... Brrrrrrrrrrr. Ps, can we vote on whether you guys should leave the Pacific Northwest?

Love the solitude of winter cruising. Shaun buy a 6 pack of Old Style and stick a couple of pretzels in the freezer for when Elizabeth gets cabin fever.. btw everyone knows hood canal is 15-20 degrees warmer than the islands. Lol. Thanks for taking the plunge. Last thing. Elizabeth sleep in the pilot berth on those scary nights. I do the same thing.

Hey guys, I want to see you get Jim and Rosie to jump in the water in the winter too. That would be a hoot. But I have to admit that with you being from Wisconsin, I'd think that having water that's liquid instead of a solid would be nice for a change!!!

I personally feel safer on a buoy than the anchor if the wind comes up. (41' boat similar windage to yours) The ones at Eagle Harbor are DNR and are quite stout.

Every dinghy should be packed with a lightweight wet suit, fins, mask and snorkel in case you have to swim back to the boat. I had to do that, once, when the water was a balmy 34 degrees. No wet suit. Just jeans, a jacket and a PFD. Shoes off and tied to my sides. Thank goodness for the PFD, too. Even though I was an outstanding swimmer, I was exhausted after that 100 yard swim, and could barely climb back in the boat.

Consider Mackaya Harbor on the south end of Lopez as a stop over spot. Not quite as far of a run to get into Griffin Bay when coming from the south plus you don't have to manage your timing around Cattle Pass currents. It's possible to get tucked in pretty snug on the southern end of Barlow Bay. Depending on what the strait is doing you may get a little roll coming into the anchorage but hey roll is in your future based your on cruising plans.
