To Todd & "my bag lady" I passed on my daily walk in NYC to performing arts school, I knew her but doubt she knew me. I'll never for get either of you. This song always makes me so sad, but it's beautiful & all about "compassion."
Your story brought tears to my eyes. I can only imagine how hard this song hit you. I’m sorry for your loss, not just for your Mom’s passing, but for the years circumstances forced you to be without her. There’s a great deal of depth in Todd that’s often reflected in his lyrics. He would be moved to know how this impacted you. God bless.
The studio version of this is astonishing. The harmonies, all sung by Todd, are so startlingly beautiful and haunting as to be an angelic choir. The greatness of this one song is one of the reasons I never take a critic's opinion seriously. Because so many critics are just stupid human beings without any talent of their own. And being stupid isn't a talent. So this chump has to burn once again for being a moron, just because someone included this quote on the Wiki page for Hermit of Mink Hollow: "Conversely, Robert Christgau of The Village Voice wrote a single-sentence review that stated: "Only a weight as willfully light as Todd can be trusted to put his smartest song ('Onomatopeia') on 'the easy side' and his dumbest ('Bag Lady') on 'the difficult side.'"[19]
This song is brilliant, deeply moving. Christgau likes Christgau and not much else. Why his ill-informed opinions litter countless Wikipedia pages like discarded trash is beyond me.
I was listening top the 'Min t Hollow' version of this song on my car CD player last month when I drove past a bag lady sitting in front of an Armenian church. I pulled over and gave her five dollars. I don't care how she spent it. I have looked for her on Washington Street since, but have not seen her. Maybe it got a little too cold, a little too lonely. As Crystalsapphire says below, those are real people under those tarps. We speak about the hunger and suffering but it is the loneliness that is so heartbreaking. Contact soothes lonliness. Give her something. Just as a reason to speak with her. Give her something, and a kind word along with it. Who cares if she drinks or not?
Like a fly batters itself against a window Time and again and again it senselessly blunders Up and down the length of West Broadway the bag lady wanders Fifty cents rent goes pretty far when you live in a subway car One stop's the same as another Even Son of Sam sees her sleeping, she's not worth the bother Sorrow, do they ever want to cry Do they see us pass by Where do they come from (simple answers) Do they come falling, falling from the sky like rain Crawling up the basement drain Misfits and black sheep Former brothers, friends of mothers There is no yesterday, there is no tomorrow There is only now and that hardly matters No one cares about sad old ladies with bags full of tatters One day it gets a bit too cold Maybe a little too wet, maybe a little too lonely Lifelessly she lies amidst her bag world But maybe she's only sleeping

A primer on Todd's mastery of unresolved harmony.

Always nice lyrics; cool melody and a wonderful story being told; and fabulous vocal delivery and harmony.

SO BEAUTIFUL... 🥺
my god i adore this song so much, thank you todd
Like a fly batters itself against a window
Time and again and again it senselessly blunders
Up and down the length of West Broadway
the bag lady wanders
Fifty cents rent goes pretty far
when you live in a subway car
One stop's the same as another
Even Son of Sam sees her sleeping,
she's not worth the bother
Sorrow, do they ever want to cry
Do they see us pass by
Where do they come from (simple answers)
Do they come falling,
falling from the sky like rain
Crawling up the basement drain
Misfits and black sheep
Former brothers, friends of mothers
There is no yesterday, there is no tomorrow
There is only now and that hardly matters
No one cares about sad old ladies
with bags full of tatters
One day it gets a bit too cold
Maybe a little too wet, maybe a little too lonely
Lifelessly she lies amidst her bag world
But maybe she's only sleeping
Class
Crying
QUE BONITA Y TRISTE CANCIÓN.
I would love the sheet music but I can't find it anywhere. 😫
