In 1968 I took my GF to see TR sing "Hello It's Me" and "Open My Eyes" here in Dallas. Spirit opened for him... What a perfomance. I haven't forgotten it to this day.
I have seen Todd numerous times with large bands and finally getting to see him three piece makes me respect him even more. This shows just how talented he really is! My hat is off to you, Sir Todd!
Fucking amazing that he pulls this off live like this. The record has a zillion overdubs and harmonies, but Todd's brilliance makes this even more exciting.
Love this tour and Trey Sabatelli rocks on those drums. This song was my intro to Todd back in 1968 with the NAZZ. Of course, Thom Mooney rocks on drums too with is band and back then as well !! I have this DVD and the VHS .. love it!
Love his growly vocals in this performance! Todd is so freakin' sexy. Have always loved this song. I remember dancing around when it was playing on the radio when I was young. Unbelievable that Todd wrote this when he was like, 19 or so. He will always be one of my favorites. He gets even better with time. I love this man!!
WTH is wrong with those people?! I vote early and often every time because Todd totally should be in the RRHF for so many reasons. It took them forever to induct Steve Miller too. They’re just idiots, I guess.
That this song holds up so well after so many years... MAN IT IS FREAKIN' HOT! Kudos to Todd for keeping it alive. So many performers never look back, perhaps because their material can't take it.
If someone told me "there is a great version of Open my eyes by Nazz played by a power trio with TR singing and playing the only guitar" I would have called bullshit on it being shure it would sound shitty and rearranged in a garage/punk style that would have totally ruined it. But I'm so glad that I would have been so wrong. This is great! It retains the original feeling adding some pure live energy to it. I'm impressed. Rungren is a genius, a hell of a musician and a true rocker.
i love garage rock and I know Nazz was a garage band. the /punk think I added was meant to explain what i meant... garage/punk is a name invented 2 decades after snazz and I was referring to the style of the arrangement. i thought that a power trio playing this song would have played it more fast, distorted and raw to compensate the lack of instruments and sound. Open my eyes is a psychedelic song that can't be played in the style of, say, the Sonics. Dig?
Todd has always been there for me...nice to have him back on the touring circuit. And playing his geetar~RAWK! Loved the Cars reunion. I listen to that record all the time. Kasim and Prairie are killing on that CD...
Stone cold genuis❤️❤️Saw him live 1970 to 1973 and1974. Utopia live concert in Pontiac Mi superdome was off the charts. Amazing Alvin Bishop warmed him up. Best concerts, ever simply outstanding❤️
What an amazing version. I wish I could've been there for this. I'm lucky enough to have seen Todd a few years back, when he played live with Hall and Oates - itself a great show. Alas, he didn't do this then.
Saw the power trio back in 2000 (I think), in Long Island, NY. Kasim had hurt his foot and had to sit on a stool for the show. Great show as always!!! Love Foamy!!!
There's another video of this show and Kas goes down when he and Todd were doing their kicks during "Couldn't I Just Tell You". Maybe he injured himself then?
If a cataclysm comes and I have to save only a few discs..."OPEN MY EYES" Nazz would be among them...!!! HYPNOTIC SOUNDS quite ahead for those years...!!! 💔❤☮
+rick humesky - that's Kasim Sultan, he's been Todd's bass player forever, both on his solo stuff and with Utopia. He's also toured with Blue Oyster Cult, Hall and Oates, Cheap Trick, Joan Jett, The Tubes, and many others ... He also played bass and sang backing vocals on Meatloaf's Bat Out Of Hell Album ( which was produced by Todd). Sultan is an incredible bass player, keyboard player and vocalist. A true musician's musician.
Yes, you're right. It's the original opening chords from Nazz, but as a guitar player I can assure you it's also the same chords to "Can't explain". 2 equally fantastic songs.
@greasemonkey1228 Awesome man--thanks for the info. I'll have to get it. I love the Utopia live DVD. The one right after "Network" where they dressed Beatle-esque.
@ELPerroBuddy63 todd did a reunion minus ocasek a few years back called "the new cars". the new album coming out is the original cars minus ben orr who passed away.
OKAY gearheads what the hell does TR pick up when he's headed to the gig with one single guitar combo amp - that's all he's got here - is that perhaps a Dumble with two 12s squeezed into it? - of course it sounds great and Todd (no surprise really) always has fantastic guitar tone
Not a bad version, considering it's a power trio. Still won't beat the Nazz, or better a live version I saw Todd do with Utopia in the 80's at Pine Knob, MI. RUNT RAWKS!
there's no question this was heavily influenced by the who, but the vocal changes & harmonies, especially at the bridge/turnaround, townsend couldn't touch with a ten foot pole; that's all todd... well, and a bit o' the beachboys ;-)
you wrote so eloquently...."stewkey don't even come close to stewkey"...thanks for sharing your rapier like wit and command of the English language. One usually has to go to a bowling alley to experience such insight. ps. I was listening to Nazz before you were born. Don't try to educate me.
There is more talent in this trio than there is in anything in the Top 100 put together. This is REAL music!
I'm 71, I love this F'n song. I was tripping my brains out in 1970 listening to this.
Isn't it an honor to introduce his music to someone who's never heard of him before? They never, ever forget you.
Remember when you heard the Beatles for the first time? I was six in 1969 and a baby sitter played Anytime at All. Turn on the kids…
I opened one of my local yokel shows with this version of this song then segued into the Who I can see for Miles.... It was a blast
Yep, the opening guitar riff of "Open My Eyes" is lifted from The Who's "I Can't Explain."
In 1968 I took my GF to see TR sing "Hello It's Me" and "Open My Eyes" here in Dallas. Spirit opened for him... What a perfomance. I haven't forgotten it to this day.
Seriously? Was this at the Dallas International Speedway? Did the Nazz play a club before the festival?
Todd did not sing lead on either in 1968 you heard Stewkey singing
Anyone else in Dallas see Nazz do the free show in Lee Park? I was there.
I remember this when it was first released , so much good stuff from the late 60’s better still than anything today
This is Rock and Roll at it's finest. The kids need to hear this! The original Nazz version is badass too, Todd rules!
The Kidz don't know who Nazz is.
I have seen Todd numerous times with large bands and finally getting to see him three piece makes me respect him even more. This shows just how talented he really is! My hat is off to you, Sir Todd!
Fucking amazing that he pulls this off live like this. The record has a zillion overdubs and harmonies, but Todd's brilliance makes this even more exciting.
big thrill to hearnthis on am when i was a kid, and so were they still kids!
Love this tour and Trey Sabatelli rocks on those drums. This song was my intro to Todd back in 1968 with the NAZZ. Of course, Thom Mooney rocks on drums too with is band and back then as well !! I have this DVD and the VHS .. love it!
Rundgren is the man who had all the talents to become a 'true star', a fantastic songwriter and musician.
Greatest. Singer /Songwriter /Musician. Ever.
Stephen Woods four non blondes
Listen to four non blondes
Listen to four blondes
Why?
Fantastic bass playing. Drum rolls are electric. Guitar perfect. Song I actually never heard before. Glad I went for a stroll.
Jann Weiner, put this man in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame NOW!!!!
I second that motion.........
They won't do it....{sobbing}
WTH is wrong with those people?! I vote early and often every time because Todd totally should be in the RRHF for so many reasons. It took them forever to induct Steve Miller too. They’re just idiots, I guess.
Nazz is by far one of my favorite bands.
This song and Black Maria are my fave Todd moments....
That this song holds up so well after so many years... MAN IT IS FREAKIN' HOT! Kudos to Todd for keeping it alive. So many performers never look back, perhaps because their material can't take it.

Nazz WAS a garage/punk band....
Ken Steiger
yeah, but, you know what I mean...
i love garage rock and I know Nazz was a garage band. the /punk think I added was meant to explain what i meant... garage/punk is a name invented 2 decades after snazz and I was referring to the style of the arrangement. i thought that a power trio playing this song would have played it more fast, distorted and raw to compensate the lack of instruments and sound. A Wizard a true star!!!
He's made tons of music. Literally!
They reprise The Who's introductory "Can't explain" riff.
Wow, Todd can still deliver. Solid as a rock.
Long live Nazz!
Todd has always been there for me...nice to have him back on the touring circuit. And playing his geetar~RAWK!
Loved the Cars reunion. I listen to that record all the time. Kasim and Prairie are killing on that CD...

This just absolutely rocks
Todd is the man.
First time I heard this song was in 1968 NAZZ... been a Todd fan ever since.. Love this song
What an amazing version. I wish I could've been there for this. I'm lucky enough to have seen Todd a few years back, when he played live with Hall and Oates - itself a great show. Alas, he didn't do this then.
3 hours ahead of its time
God bless Stewkey!
it's really Beautiful the way this particular Video is shot, the jib,/ Cran , cameras .. well done Todd! Solo lead is great on Little Greenie....
great, sounds like garage band. love it!
Excellent clip of a truly excellent musician!
this was one KICK ASS show!!!!!
Thanks for the post! Damm, they rock it up!!
Local boy Todd!! Such a great song. The new Queens of the Stone Age from Times New Roman had TR all over it 💚💚💚
Saw the power trio back in 2000 (I think), in Long Island, NY. Kasim had hurt his foot and had to sit on a stool for the show. Great show as always!!! Love Foamy!!!
There's another video of this show and Kas goes down when he and Todd were doing their kicks during "Couldn't I Just Tell You". Maybe he injured himself then?
...even if you don't like Todd, you gotta admit THAT was great!
That was life- affirming.
1:41, This all the proof I need that Todd is one of the best guitarists in Rock!
Todd throws a major seventh in the Who tribute riff.
And he's a Philly boy too! Upper Darby to be exact (Tina Fey also). I went to Manoa Elementary School. I wonder if TR went there........
If a cataclysm comes and I have to save only a few discs..."OPEN MY EYES" Nazz would be among them...!!! HYPNOTIC SOUNDS quite ahead for those years...!!! 💔❤☮
NAZZ. Todd. Love!
what a drummer!!!!!
miester rhovanion whotta bass playa!!! the bass track is really pumped on this...bring the thunder!
+rick humesky - that's Kasim Sultan, he's been Todd's bass player forever, both on his solo stuff and with Utopia.

+rick humesky just a really clean version...did you see tod at daryls house? really cool stuff....
+miester rhovanion yup, good stuff!
AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!
@axeman1009
this is from a DVD called Live in San Francisco - probably available to buy - the whole thing is on this level - awesome shit
Thats textbook right there.
Incredible performance
Power trio!!!!
I FUCKIN LOVE THIS GUY!!!!!!!!!
WHAT A FINE MUSICIAN!!!!
rock 'n roll like it oughta be
The opening cords remind me of "Can't Explain" by The Who.
I legit thought they were doing a cover of that, then the riff came in and I was like, what the fuck?
They intentionally mimicked the song when they wrote this in like 1968.
Ahhhh, makes sense now.
Paul Stanley said this was the song that made him write Love Her all I can
Same tempo, but no they are not the same chords.
Mega man Todd!
Wow! Yeah! Clean and tight, That's how it's done!
Todd!!!
Great Performance of a great sonp
THE MAN
On point!!
NAZZ!
Yes, you're right. It's the original opening chords from Nazz, but as a guitar player I can assure you it's also the same chords to "Can't explain". 2 equally fantastic songs.
@greasemonkey1228
Awesome man--thanks for the info. I'll have to get it. I love the Utopia live DVD. The one right after "Network" where they dressed Beatle-esque.
Nazz tastic. is Feat Don't Fail me Now up here somewhere?
Nazz!
@ELPerroBuddy63 todd did a reunion minus ocasek a few years back called "the new cars". the new album coming out is the original cars minus ben orr who passed away.
Bass player is a monster too.
Is this what 40 years of singing sounds like?
What about a tour to South America?
nice!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Same opening riff as Can’t Explain by The Who.
Alright T-T-T-T-TODDD!!!!!!!!!!
My god could that snare be any louder!?
No, lol...
good old green guitar yowza!
todd tomorrow Indy. Yeah!
@Ted Mendsen
yup you right
What tour was this???--such great sound quality...and like my man says...no keyboards!
Fucking incredible
OKAY gearheads what the hell does TR pick up when he's headed to the gig with one single guitar combo amp - that's all he's got here - is that perhaps a Dumble with two 12s squeezed into it? - of course it sounds great and Todd (no surprise really) always has fantastic guitar tone
It's a Line 6
Thom Mooney playing drums on this - providing he played as he did with Nazz - would really have given his tune some 'lift'.
Rundgren 2012! lol
Kasim kicks major ass here
Give the drummer some! Trey Sabatelli really helps this power trio ROCK. He's a great singer too.
Is that Prairie Prince on drums?
Never mind. It is Trey Sabatelli.
This is supposed to be sung by Stewkey Antoni
No....It's an Line 6 AX 212!
I have two of these great amps.
YEAH ! Lazy, maybe...but it's all I want to do too ! Have some fun man !
anybody know where i can get an MP3 of this song or entire show?
I wonder how many people in that audience thought they were gonna hear "Can't Explain" after the first three chords...
is this on a cd anywhere
Could it be that Pete Case (The Plimsouls) dug this tune?
Not a bad version, considering it's a power trio. Still won't beat the Nazz, or better a live version I saw Todd do with Utopia in the 80's at Pine Knob, MI. RUNT RAWKS!
Drummer kicks balls.
there's no question this was heavily influenced by the who, but the vocal changes & harmonies, especially at the bridge/turnaround, townsend couldn't touch with a ten foot pole; that's all todd... well, and a bit o' the beachboys ;-)
Which album is this from?
you wrote so eloquently...."stewkey don't even come close to stewkey"...thanks for sharing your rapier like wit and command of the English language. One usually has to go to a bowling alley to experience such insight. ps. I was listening to Nazz before you were born. Don't try to educate me.
Check out the Move's cover of this song from their Live at the Fillmore.
yeah they probably could've just ditched the "can't explain" intro if you ask me, but i guess todd always had a thing for pastiche...
the dickies need to do this tune
the nazz
They really slow down the pace in this live version. I liked it played faster...
Sounds great, but I miss the keyboards.
