Very unique to hear it this stripped down live as opposed to the Initiation studio production ! Todd on the Wurlie keys, Powell with early synth sounds, Seigler time signature with Willie always solid & true soul vocal backup. Sweet ! ...
Initiation is such a great album. My favourite Todd song (actually a tie with Torch Song) is Fair warning and I love the way it morphs back into Real Man at the end.
And Todd playing another RMI. Sadly Rogers Moog 55's and both RMI's went up in the warehouse fire that destroyed all their gear as well as Willie's motorcycle frame "Trapparatus" drum set and Todd and Kasim's "Ankh" Veleno guitars/bass.
Amazing!! I loved Todd since the early seventies. I finally got the chance to see him last week in Atlanta. Unbelievable performance! Some 50 years later and I still love his incredible catalog, Talent, Charisma, uniqueness and Stage presence!
I jumped on the ‘Todd/ Utopia’ bandwagon in 1979, when a friend of mine introduced me to his music- I saw the ‘Adventures in Utopia’ tour in 1980, and later in 1985, the ‘POV’ tour, and then Todd’s ‘A Capella’ tour. I have also seen him at a computer fair in Chicago, where he demonstrated the Fairlight CMI, which he used on ‘A Capella’. The last time I saw him in concert was in 2015 on the ‘World’ tour, where I had bought stage-side tickets. I have posted video of portions of that concert on TH-cam. I really wish I could have seen his ‘Healing’ concert in 2013!

Todd also writes some pretty experimental stuff like Bowie...... the two sound completely different offcourse, but the approach to songwriting is very similar for both of them
@ Damn, I miss Luther, what a voice, background, eventually made it "up front".. Love his endeavors..what a God given voice . Even in the Bowie days( look into he rare recordings) 👌😎♥️
Wow…. Never saw this on the Whistle Test at the time (UK version of Midnight Special). Saw him play this live at Knebworth supporting The Stones though…
Hey I see him. I see him too!!! Luther Vandross. Wow!! Nobody said anything. I stumbled on this video after watching the Isley Brothers sing a song Todd wrote and sung , Hello, It's me. I didn't know that either. Todd is a musical genius, way ahead of his time!!!
I think you've right about Luther, but what was he doing in London? I worked as a Secretary at BBC Television in London in the 60's and 70's, and one of my offices was just down the stairs from that small studio (one of two) where we see Todd. They were previously used for Presentation. They did "Old Grey Whistle Test" there, late in the evening, after we'd all gone home, but we watched it on TV later . We weren't encouraged to loiter at Television Centre, unless we were going to see an evening show in one of the larger 7-8 studios downstairs. I discovered two other smallish studios in a building called Richmond House. I'll try to find a date for the episode shown here. J.H.
Warped Passage. Thanks! Just seen your reply. Although I heard 2-3 of Todd's records in the 70's, I actually never saw him on any programme or at any concert & I missed that Old Grey Whistle Test. He's a complete mystery to me. Now I'm catching up & can see what I missed. There's an advert on TV here, playing, "I Saw The Light", sparking new interest. In one episode of OGWT (just found), Bob Harris & crew went to the Bearsville Picnic, USA. They quickly found clever Todd on his computer, but didn't seem so interested in his music. BBC Engineers are very clever and quick to copy. Todd reminds me a little of the deceased Bill Withers - so much talent. Like Bill (to us), he suddenly disappeared. He should have toured Britain & Europe more and written more ballards. I'm going to try and draw more attention to his work. I will keep you posted. J. H.
@ Sounds to me like the audio was likely engineered for small television speakers, and the mixing desk output could be different than what was broadcast, like a monitor mix, but sounds good to me nonetheless. I appreciate the post!
I LOVED Todd when he was skinny. Even though he is still thin, it's obvious that he's gained a good amount of poundage, especially around the stomach area!! Sorry Todd!!
This is great but Todd's studio and other versions are a little better. Manifold reasons. Too funky for me and i like very little funk. Maybe a song like Tyrone Davis' Can i Change my Mind uses funk well but i just hate funk .. ruined a lot of 70s songs.

Funny that you call this funky, I love funk but this ain't it
An EXCELLENT version of this song! Todd was hating being a 'singles' artist, but sure glad he did this one.
Great song indeed
I have all his stuff. Me and Todd go way, way back.
I also have all of his stuff.
Let's also hear it for the BBC. Outstanding technical quality for its day
To me this was the best version of Todd.
In a perfect (Todd) world, this would have went straight up to #1. Magnificent !
Glad you like it
It is a perfect Todd world. You already know that. 🤙
Todd is the greatest. One of his many many many brilliant songs. A lotta soul on that stage...
Yeah that's right!

Yes , more plain, more basic
This version has more soul. Better drum sound too.
This was a really fertile, transitional period, 'proto Utopia' to soon become the longest lasting Utopia, the Kas period.
Very talented man. So glad I grew up with his music from day one.
Nazz, Nazz Nazz

always got a kick out of Todd only being listed on the playboy poll under keyboards as opposed to being one of the greatest guitarists ever.

Initiation was my first Todd's album....and...Real Man is one of the greatest Todd's song...😊✌
it's a classic
The back up singer on the left has so much poise. He sings with pride. Love watching him. This is IMO Todd's greatest song. Love the lyrics.
The backup singer on the right is Luther Vandross.
Too cool. Old Grey Whistle has the grooviest stuff!!!! Love this and early Priest, too!
So cool to see Roger playing the RMI Keyboard Computer, with the Moog on the side. And Luther!
Yes, great setup!
