Years ago, on a Todd Rundgren forum, Todd's old friend and Bearsville record executive Paul Fishkin (aka "Leroy Boy" in _We Gotta Get You a Woman)_ told of Todd bringing this song in in this form, just voice and piano. All the record company people thought it would be a huge hit, saying that "It's the sort of song to which virginities were surrendered " and started picking out the colors of the sports cars they were all going to buy. Todd was offended at the naked avarice, said "It's not finished!" And added all of the synths and percussion on it to spite them.
Todd Rundgren, under appreciated. This guy has a great voice and great tunes. I saw him ten plus years ago when he was the lead singer of The Cars. Great artist. Respect!
@russellhowardjr.9894 is absolutely correct, Todd did briefly join The Cars (minus Ocasek and minus of course Ben Orr (may he rest in peace)) but under the name "The New Cars" in 2006. They put out a live CD of their performance called "It's Alive" consisting mostly of songs from The Cars catalogue and a couple from Todd's, but even included a few new (and excellent!) songs they wrote together and recorded in the studio, one of which they also include a live version of on that CD. If I remember right, the rest of band were hungry to tour but Ocasek wasn't interested (maybe he just couldn't support doing so without Orr), so somehow they got Rundgren to join them so they could pull a tour off, and Rundgren brought in one of his old Utopia group, Kasim Sultan on bass, and drummer Prairie Prince (from the Tubes) to fill things out. Keep in mind that is just going off a vague memory from nearly 20 years ago, so don't hold me to that story. In any case, I don't think the merger lasted long, them not performing as the The New Cars or putting out any new music after that fling. Todd doesn't strive to mimic Ocasek's singing so much as sing in the style of Ocasek to be, you know, just what they needed (cough cough). Ahem, still, it was a worthy effort and not just a cash grab, and if you're a fan of either The Cars or Rundgren, I recommend you give it a listen.
@@marknjp thank you for the validation my friend. I never said Rundgren was an original member. I just remember that tour, ie concert in particular. You’re right @marknjp…he didn’t try to emulate Ocasek at all. I know The Cars history and Tood Rundgren’s history. He’s a great artist in his own right.
They toured as The New Cars. Rik Ocasek wasn't too happy about that but the rest of the band had wanted to tour for years and he refused. It resulted in a really good live album.
Amazing how a truly talented artist can captivate an audience with just their voice and an acoustic instrument. No autotune, drum track, squad of choreographed dancers, explosions, or synthesized anything. But even more amazing is that there was a time when you could watch it for free on TV. Midnight Special, Soul Train, American Bandstand, Don Kirschner’s Rock Concert… To my knowledge the only thing remotely like those iconic shows that exists now is NPR’s Tiny Desk Series.
@@David-yw2lv Your initial point was that you 'couldn''t believe it was never released as a single.' Although I have already replied, I will add: not only was it a single. It was the lead single from the album "Todd." I don't know why it didn't chart better-- maybe radio didn't support it... maybe it was ahead of its time... maybe both... but its hauntingly beautiful, and anyone who's heard it knows that. As they say: if you know, you know.
So great seeing and hearing all these fantastic old Todd Rundgren clips.Still sounds great today. Looking forward to seeing the shows he hosted and the Utopia shows you have.
"....for without it there is no dream...," this makes my heart sting and I get all tender. Wonderment.
Me too

A radio station in my hometown played this frequently in early 1974.I can't believe it was never released as a single.
It was a single. It was just ahead of its time
@@sweetiepie1862 It was the B side of Hello It's Me.
@@David-yw2lv Maybe you have a different or reissued version, but It was an 'A' side with 'Heavy Metal Kids' on the B side.
