DIY/How-To: Clockspring Replacement for 2008 Jeep Grand Cherokee 5.7L Hemi V8

- Had to replace my clockspring so I decided to shoot a detailed video of the replacement. Purchased a replacement off of eBay for about $130, but this was with the turn signal and wipers controls.
This was for a 2008 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland edition with a 5.7L V8 Hemi.

when you get a new clock spring it comes with a plastic insert that comes equally spunned so you dont have to do the centering,,dont remove this clip until you install it,,other wise follow his directions to center it,,,DISCONNECT YOUR BATTERY FOR AT LEAST 2 HOURS TO DISCHARGE THE AIRBAG CIRCUITRY,,,,,PLACE YOUR AIRBAGS FACING UP IN CASE THEY BLOW,,,,,,,BE CAREFUL THIS CAN BE LETHAL,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

For anyone struggling with the three metal clips of the back of the airbag, put a thin but sturdy knife on the side of the hole CLOSEST to the center of the steering wheel. Push to shove it under the clip, then pry it up in the direction FURTHEST from the center of the steering wheel. To avoid discouragement, try all three until you get one, then it will add courage and understanding for the other two.
You can also use the front-facing camera on your phone to look back there.

I successfully used the information on this video to replace my steering wheel. BTW, according to the Jeep dealer, the three screws in the lower cowling may arbitrarily be torx or phillips. Great video, well done!

Man thank you thank you and thank you, just finished it up, the exact same fix I did on my Grand Cherokee, with a little extra of a putting the same sticks of the lights and the wipers into the new Clockspring. But thanks to your video I got the guts to do it myself and bum it worked.

That was very interesting. I had the weirdest fault. My anti slip error lights would come on after 1 - 5 miles of driving. I have a 2007 (bought new) Jeep Cherokee Limited RHD (uk market) with barely 30,000 miles on the mileometer and it was in and out of our local auto garage for many tests. Finally they determined the clock spring was creating the error. Parts for the jeep are very difficult to source now that jeep are no longer jeep. A new clock spring cost £GB1000, unbelievable I know, but I love my luxurious Cherokee with its proper automatic 4WD torque locking gearbox and differentials which out performs all lesser modern 4WDs (AWDs most of them). Taking the steering wheel off (a puller had to be used and I was warned it might cause damage) damaged the steering column so the garage had to replace that too. Total cost with VAT was an eye watering £GB2000. Still, a far better deal than buying a Jeep Compass auto (the Cherokee is unavailable in UK now Fiat are jeep) without proper locking diffs for £GB40,000+ So thanks to the persistence of a garage that has looked after our family vehicles for 20+ years. Just went for a perfect 60 mile drive in it. Just like new :-)

hey man great video I have a 06 SRT8 model and the clock spring looks about the same but the removal looks different Ebay has the part and is labeled specifically for 05-07 models??. I am going to attempt it using your video but i may need the steering wheel puller. your post was very helpful
Would you please tell me which size of TORX screwdriver you used to remove the lower cover (the hole under the steering wheel) . I got a T-30 and apparently didn't work, then I called the dealer and they tole me t25 and t20 and don't seem to work either. I got a gran Cherokee Laredo 2010. Thanks in advance .
Not sure if you still read posts on this video, but I bought a used 2005 Jeep Gran Cherokee Limited Edition and the steering wheel is making this noise. Also, the radio isn’t working when all the fuses have been replaced in it. You think the clock spring may be the issue and causing the radio to not work? I don’t have any issues with the headlights or heat/air working...
This one sounds kind of tricky. First, a disclaimer, I am by no means a mechanic, lol! I just enjoy trying to find and fix things myself before trying to pay someone to do it. For your issue, I do not think the radio not working is the clockspring. The clockspring just connects your steering wheel controls to your radio. You should still be able to use the radio. When my clockspring went bad, the radio still worked, but sometimes the stations would get crazy and change or the volume would fluctuate, but it was always on. When you say the radio is not working, is there no power at all or just certain things not working (display comes on, but nothing plays?) Also, is it the stock Jeep radio or an aftermarket Radio, like a Sony? Your radio should have a continuous power connection directly from the battery, unless maybe something shorted out in the clockspring and fried the radio completely?? I'm not sure. If it were my Jeep, I would start by eliminating options, you've already checked the fuses. If that doesn't work, then maybe the radio or wiring harness in the back is bad? You would need a voltmeter to check the power coming into the radio. If you have power coming into the radio, the plug should good, which would leave me to believe it's the radio. To eliminate the option of the clockspring being the cause, I would then disconnect the clockspring , reconnect the battery while the clockspring is disconnected and see if the radio comes on (remember, before putting the airbag back on, to disconnect the battery again). These are all guesses without actually seeing/working with the radio.
Swampazz Fishing the radio did come on for a few minutes when we replaced the factory radio with a new factory radio. But then went back out after a few hours. I will have to have a local mechanic check out the clock spring and try your suggestion. I really don’t wanna go to the dealer and have them figure it out. Thank you for all the help!
Did this not cone with the plastic clips that keep the clock spring from rotating for install?

When you said that you found the center on the clock spring at 7 o’clock ish did you have to adjust the actual clock spring to be upright at 12 for the white connector? Just noticed in the next frame the holes were lined up for the top white connector at 12 o’clock
Good question, but no. Just wanted to be as close to center as possible. Your steering wheel won't turn more than the difference.
Also, if you buy it brand new, it should be centered for you. I bought that one used off eBay.
Did you pull the yellow tab off the new clock spring before installing it? If so you weren’t supposed to because it keeps it straight for you until your ready to install the steering when back on.
Unfortunately, it didn't have one. I bought it used off eBay so I had to find dead center, or close to it.
I ordered one off eBay as well and did this same repair. It didn't have the centering pin either. I tried to center it like you did, but now I'm getting steering angle warning codes and I'm going to have to take it off again. This sucks ass
@@LookinAround2 I'm guessing you got it sorted by now, but for anyone else: To reset (re-center) the Steering Angle Sensor (SAS) which is built into these clocksprings, you need to set your front wheels to the straight-ahead position. After that, hold the wheel straight, shut the engine off, then reinsert the key, start the engine. Next, turn the wheel full left then full right, full left, full right again and then bring it back to center. (2 times each full lock) Hold the steering wheel so that the wheels are dead straight and then turn the key off. When you restart, your SAS BAS lights will still be on, but if you did the reset procedure correctly, then they should turn off on their own when you start driving again. *The key to this is to make sure your wheels are straight, not so much your steering wheel. The Jeep will throw lights / codes if the steering angle sensor thinks you're turning while you're actually going straight and will apply various brakes or possibly cut power to try and help 'save you' via the ESP programming. (If the steering wheel is off-center when the wheels are straight and assuming the steering wheel was put back on in the EXACT same position as it was removed, then you would center it via the tie rod ends / steering rack like is done when you get an alignment.
Did you have the jack the front end up to turn your steering wheel during the airbag removal?
If I remember correctly, I may have reconnected the battery, turned the car on, turned the wheel, then disconnected the battery again. Jacking it up would assist with turning, but as you can see, it was dark and late and I didn't want to have to deal with that lol
That's not an air bag module, its the air bag itself , airbag module us a small computer between front seats

Alright, Same issue with the no horn, aibarg light, etc. BUT My turn signals, cruise and other levers are still working. I ordered the part but it does not come with turn signals, wipers etc.. any advice on how to separate just the clock spring from those?

Is there a way you can share the e-bay link? Did other controls fail as well? Such as 110VAC outlet on the dash? Stability control?
Sorry man, the ebay auction was well over a year ago and the link isn't available. I honestly just searched for the part number right on the Clock spring sticker. Here is the part number that I looked up: 56046535AG. Try searching for it without the two letters at the end. I found some extra items on ebay doing it that way. Good luck man!
At what point did you pray to God after reinstalling the airbag it wont explode when you started the car back up.
If you only knew. I did a dry run before recording and stood outside the vehicle and reached around to start it up with my arm over the dash board through the window lol.

Hey there! So, before I bought it, I took a flashlight and could actually see the part number on the clock spring in between the steering wheel and clock spring. It was a very tiny gap, but I could see the actual part number sticker on the clock spring. I then typed that part number into eBay, and boom, I found one that matched it identically. A quick google search also showed other part numbers that could be substituted, but I found one that matched.
If all else fails, see if there are any of those junkyards with the "you pull and pay" idea. They're great places to "practice" pulling the piece off and not having to worry about breaking anything. Good luck!

my 05 GC is honking randomly to the point where i had to take off the the horn relay. could this be because of of the clockspring as well?
It's a possibility, although if the clockspring were going bad, you would be having multiple things happening. It controls the horn, turn signals, lights, and if you have radio controls in your steering wheel, the radio will go crazy. If JUST the horn is going off and you don't hear that crackling noise while turning your steering wheel, it might not be the clockspring. maybe a short in the wiring somewhere else?

Well, I was able to see the part number that was on the clock spring by looking into the gap between the steering wheel and the clock spring (its a VERY small gap, at the 2:20 mark in the video, you can see the label with the part number that I searched for, which was 56046535AG, you can try eliminating the "AG" and you might find similar parts that are compatible). Once I had the part number I just went on ebay and typed in the part number and found one.
Is this related to my esp bas light on my 2006 jeep liberty
It might be. My esp/bas light came on, but not JUST that light. I have several things going wrong at once. If that is the only light you see, it might not be your clockspring. I would take it to an Auto Zone and have then read your warning lights and see if they can identify any codes. They can give you a print out and you can do more google research on the codes they give you for possible issues.

I replaced the clockspring now my airbag light is off. However my bas and esp lights are on constant now instead of intermediate like before

I do. I actually recently bumped my tire into a cement post, minor damage and threw off my alignment. Now my lights are all on. lol Taking it in today try and get it fixed.

I only replaced mine because my turn signal was wearing out long before the clock spring broke. This might open you up for more options since there are plenty of aftermarket clock springs that might fit your vehicle just fine. If eBay does not work for you, try searching Amazon! If you can get the part number and send it to me, I'll be glad to see if I can search for you, as well.
My last option/recommendation would be to check a local junkyard or a "you pull and pay" type place where you can find your vehicle and remove an old one from a junk car. I've used places like that many times before with no problem.
