How Kia Pulled Off A Massive Turnaround

  • For many of its early years in the U.S., Kia was a low-end brand and its cars were often criticized for poor quality, reliability and design. But a brush with bankruptcy and an investment from Hyundai, Kia grew fast, started winning awards, and became a highly desired brand. Sales have increased by three-fold in the US over the last 20 years. Now, it’s one of the most marked up brands in America. Vehicles like the Telluride, Stinger, Sportage, Sorrento and EV6 have become strong sellers and critical darlings. But Kia faces challenges. An EV sales surge in 2022 has given way to an around 30 percent decline in 2023. There are lawsuits from several U.S. cities over stolen vehicles, recalls over fire risks and a snub from the federal government looking to boost American EV manufacturing. So can the newly cool Kia brand keep up the momentum?

They've also really filled in the demand for cars when Chrysler, GM, and Ford really fell off the bandwagon in terms of quality last decade. I've owned a Kia e-Niro here in France since March 2019, it was one of the first batch to arrive here so I was a bit worried by the possibility of early production car problems. After 88,000 km it has been pretty much flawless. The 12v factory fit battery wasn't up to the job which is strange as EVs don't pull cranking amps but they MUST have 12 volts to open the relays to the traction battery. I replaced it with a Bosch after 3 years. Kia did an initial recall to add a battery heater and a known problem with front wheel articulation leading to a 'clunk' when slow manoeuvring to park was fixed without any fuss. The 64 kWh battery is in fact 67.5 kWh and this buffer, together with the BMS has resulted in no loss of range at all. We have done long hauls from our home in South west France to the UK, Germany and Switzerland and never had a problem finding fast public chargers. The charging speed is no longer up with newer cars, topping out at 75 kW which it can only sustain for the first 20% or so of charging, so it takes about 30 minutes to add 200 km but as retired folks we are rarely in a rush. This summer the surprising amount of rear seat space has allowed us to carry 4 adults plus a toddler in a child seat with acceptable comfort. The build quality seems solid, at least as good as previously owned Toyotas and on the billiard table pot hole free autoroutes of France the car rides smoothly and quietly.

I never really looked at Kia until I saw a friend's Kia Soul with well over 200k miles on it still reliably going strong. That car has been on a US road trip tour from sea to shining sea. It has been to all four corners of the continental USA. It has been to Texas and back to Kentucky every Spring and Fall, as well as Oklahoma, and plenty more destinations through the Southeast. I believe it is a 2018 model. That thing is currently on another road trip there and back again from Kentucky to Florida.
The perks of this vehicle! It's got decent storage space. It takes what most people want on an SUV and puts it in a vehicle with much better fuel efficiency. Fine for those that rarely go offroad. It will probably handle most driving conditions.
Is this why I see so many Kia Souls ??? They are everywhere now. That's a practical vehicle. I don't know much else about them other than noticing they've invaded. They're everywhere!!!

🤢🤮 Kia souls are garbage. I’m sure they didn’t tell you they got a new engine at 100k miles. My friend bought a Hyundai and she needed a new engine at 80k miles and my mechanic confirmed it’s common on most Kia and Hyundais. She didn’t have a warranty, but my mechanic said they still need to fix it because they are selling people defective vehicles. And they don’t want to get sued so they did it. She also wanted to fix her sunroof and they were gonna charge her $5,000 because Hyundai sold the sunroofs incomplete. I own Hondas and Toyotas. I hardly ever see a mechanic unless it’s an oil change or a flat tire. Yeah they are more expensive but you get your you pay for. High quality costs more.

So far they absolutely love the hyundai cars (and genesis) and theyve been rock solid reliable in the past 5 years of ownership (compared to when one of our old bmws had issues 2 years in) also cant fault the substantial cost savings of not using premium fuel that we used on the bmws.

It also looked crazy stylish and good. I think that was the real beginning of their turnaround. In the early 2010s they started releasing much more stylish cars with Mercedes S class features for Honda Civic money, on top of the 100,000 mile warranty they drove a hard bargain. Someone please start up a second class action lawsuit to address both Hyundai/KIA negligence on behalf of ALL owners irregardless of theft, fire, etc. Owner insurance premiums totaling nearly twice the cost they should be isn't fair. The issue is, my Soul looks too similar to a base end model that doesn't - so it has been broken into and major damage to the steering column as they failed to steal it. The KIA Telluride is the best car you can ever own in your life. It is so well made and drives so well it is unbelievable. The ride is silky smooth and yet it is so stable in winter it is out of this world! We live on a small street that is not on the city's priority list when it comes to snow removal and on this one day last year when we had an ice storm, the road was literally an ice skating rink after a day of raining ice. When my partner drove to work in the morning, he was literally driving on pure ice and our Telluride pulled through. The car was skating on the road and the AWD and the traction control came through and was able to grip the road and stop itself. Imagine an 8-seater SUV skating on the road and stopping itself!
And the car looks great too. We had other drivers on the road stopping our car just to give us compliments telling us how beautiful our car looked. The interior of the car is great too with everything so conveniently located including a huge infotainment screen, plenty of cupholders and charging ports for electronic devices, TWO panoramic sun-roofs, lean-back back seats, spacious legrooms, large windows for even third-row seats, 360-degree view, a feature that you can only get on the highest trim of other SUV's like the Volkswagen Atlas and power liftgate for the trunk on just the 2nd highest trim. The Telluride doesn't just take care of the driver; it takes care of its passengers too. And all of those packed features and high-quality build at 20% off the price of other comparable mid-size SUV's. It is UNREAL!! We were originally considering to buy a Volkswagen Atlas but when we saw the Telluride, we went for the Telluride immediately. The dealer told us that people were trading in their Porche to buy the Telluride. LOL Telluride is definitely the best car purchase that we have ever made in our lives. It's our home on the road.
