  • Just like the Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla and Mazda3, the Subaru Impreza has a name to uphold, and the newest model easily achieves that. It's not for everyone but I could argue that this model is the smartest buy in the segment, watch to find out why.

    The Impreza is functional and conservative which is what I was looking for. It maybe boring in appearance but I think it will age well. You get an AWD standard without much difference in mpg and cost compared to the competition. The Impreza does everything I need a car todo.

    Having a stick shift and no push button start makes my Impreza harder to steal. Yes, it is not the faster car in the segment on dry pavement, but come winter here in Canada, the Impreza will outdrive all of them. The full time AWD is far better than the Haldex "grip and slip" system used by the Mazda 3 and others. As to reliability, my wife's Forester is 10 years old and has never given us any troubles

    My last car was an 09 Impreza 2.5i Premium, it was a great car with great traction, no FWD plow or torque steer, but did not have enough ground clearance to take on forest roads without scraping bottom. When it was seven years old and out of warranty the engine blew up (broken rod related to head gasket failure), but Subaru replaced the engine for me for free. That was the only thing to go wrong in the 11 years I owned it and Subaru was great about fixing it. I recently shopped for its replacement, Including the CX-30 (ugly, cramped, horrible transmission (slipped a lot when shifting gears, hesitant to downshift), uncomfortable seat bottom (very soft in the middle with side bolsters like wood), no fog lights, and an awful entertainment control system and hard to see screen. It did have nice steering and knobs. I don't know why people praise that car when they can get an Impreza or Crosstrek. I think the sales figures show that many more people prefer the Subaru models. I bought a 21 Crosstrek Limited to get the ground clearance and more power to merge and pass. I prefer the Subaru CVT over the Mazda auto, it "shifts" better. We have some horrible roads where I live and I marvel at the ride quality every time I drive it, like I'm being pampered. I would suggest to anyone who will take the car off pavement or wants more power to choose the Crosstrek over the Impreza. Thanks for your great, comprehensive, best-in-the-biz reviews! Your reviews helped me during my shopping experience.

      Thank you for the feedback, I'm glad they took care of you on the 09 impreza, I've seen a few with blown gaskets too, definitely don't want to get caught paying that one! I personally like the crosstrek and the CX30 but they definitely serve different sides of the segment. I'm just glad that the market has two DEPENDABLE options in the class that serve two different types of buyers!

      A friend of mine use to be a Subaru mechanic. He is getting rid of his wife’s forester as it needs $5000 in repairs and they wont be tossing that money at it. They are looking at getting a crosstrek. My issue is I don’t like CVTs. Had one, never again. I love the Mazda 6 speed. Bulletproof reliability. No issues with its shifting either up or down. Been to New York and Cleveland twice each from Toronto. No sore backside. Seats are comfortable. As much as I like Subaru, no thanks.

    I bought a new Legacy this past summer. I'm also 6' 3". I got an Impreza loaner while service was chasing down a rattle in my car. While it was fine my shin was resting on the hard console. Not quite enough leg room and not enough thigh support. The six way power seat doesn't raise up in the front to help with that like eight way power seats do. That said, it was quiet enough and rode nicely for a compact.

    If the styling seems bland, look at the Sport trim. When I bought my 2020, Sport trim (with CVT) was only minimally more money for a huge styling difference, 18" wheels, Harmon Kardon speaker system (the best oem speakers I've ever owned), and all of the interior options except for the leather. Comparing base models, the Impreza's styling is on par with the Toyota Corolla or Mazda 3, although both of those have some really nice paint options (but you sacrifice AWD for about the same price). And yes, CVT cars are all slow 0-60, because they are electronically limited in the lowest transmission ratios in order to save wear and tear on the CVT. It accelerates just fine from a rolling start.

    I don’t understand why people complain about acceleration in 4 cylinder cars with no turbo. People complain about the acceleration in the Impreza, but I see complaints about most small cars with four bangers. Considering it’s delivering power to four wheels instead of two, I think acceleration is pretty good. Just my opinion.

    • @Realistick
      @Realistick  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I'd agree, it's on par with the Kia Forte NA, I think it does become a problem when you see small naturally aspirated engines being used in larger cars like the Subaru forester, however, speed isn't usually a big priority to a lot of buyers of cars like that. Still, wouldn't hurt to throw the 2.5 in this when the crosstrek already gets it and it retains the same gas mileage!

    • @jamessimonds7362
      @jamessimonds7362 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Because it is,an AWD, that is,why it is,weak in power. That's why I feel that Subaru should give it the 2.5. 30 more horses will make a huge difference. I bought a new 2018 Impreza 5 door. My only complaint is the weak engine, I need another new car. I own 2 Subarus. I really would like to buy another one. But that 2.0 is why I'm reluctant to buy a Subaru.

    • @Realistick
      @Realistick  3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      The lack of the sixth gear had perplexed me, the unit feels nice and old school, which was fun for me, but they could have achieved the same feel with six gears. I think they wanted the more fun feel of this specific 5 spd over the current 6 spd in the crosstrek but they didn't want to design another transmission. The civic definitely provides a better manual experience and the interior has a nicer feel to it too!

    • @jamessimonds7362
      @jamessimonds7362 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Actually, I have a Impreza with the CVT in the base model. I have zero issues with the CVT. The lack of power is my only issue. The 2.0 is weak. Subaru should scrap the 2.0
      and replace it with the 2.5. The 2.5 will give 30 more horses and mpg is the same.

      They make them, they had issues with their earlier generation Lineartronic CVTs but they're better now. Still, if they have powertrain issues early on, it's likely due to the CVT. The only Subaru in the past 5 years to have cvt issues (to my knowledge) is the Ascent.

      After playing with the paddle shifters on back roads, I've come to really like the CVT in my 2020 Sport hatchback. But, if I was building a dream-spec version of this car, I'd probably prefer an 8-speed sequential, similar to VW's DSG transmission, with the paddle shifters. My wife's Jetta SEL has the DSG, but her manual mode requires using the stick. After 3 years of paddle-shifting (I had a 2019 Sport sedan prior to my 2020 hatch), I find it odd having to take a hand off the wheel to shift an electronically-controlled transmission.

      @@djkenny1202 The CVTs will last, if you ignore Subaru and actually change the fluid every 50k-60k miles. It got a bad rep because Subaru originally billed it as a sealed unit and that the fluid was good for the lifetime of the transmission. It turned out that without changing the fluid, the lifetime of the transmission averaged around 85k miles. Subaru made a mistake, and their CVT's reputation suffered from it, instead of Subaru just acknowledging the issue and covering a fluid change under the original warranty instead of waiting until the unit failed. I'm not sure why anyone even believed that gear oil never has to be replaced in a transmission. Just like any other moving part of the car, if you service it properly, it will last.

      Personally, I agree that it is bland but I enjoy the traditional side silhouette, I don't like the slouchy looks of some of the newer hatchbacks. I don't think Subaru has made a sharp-for-the-time impreza design since the Hawkeye and 22b days. But that was a different era and the competition was all pretty bland back then. This one at least doesn't make any bad choices, there's just not a bunch of emotion to it, the sport helps it a little imo
