6 Reasons to Buy a 2023 Subaru Impreza (Anything New?)

  • When it comes to small hatchbacks, there are much more exciting, fresh cars than the Subaru Impreza. However, the now dated Impreza still offers a compelling package. Today, I will explain the highs and the lows and why I think it has a leg up on the Mazda3, Honda Civic, Hyundai Elantra, Toyota Corolla and more.
    Thank you, Royal on the Eastside, for letting me test out the Impreza!

    My 2021 manual Impreza gives me 35 MPG (6.5 litres/100 km) in the highway with the a/c on, and I am happy with this. The car is not fast, particularly when coming from a stop, on dry conditions. But when winter comes here in Canada the opposite is true. And on slippery roads the Subaru's full time AWD is far better than the "grip & slip" Haldex system used by Toyota, Nissan, Mazda, etc.

    We need more "legacy" (no pun intended) cars like this. If they just stop changing things every year it will make the cars cheaper to obtain! I love the way the Impreza looks. I hope they keep it "as is" for a couple more years.

Even my '21 Odyssey, while it also has vents in the roof for rear seat passengers, has vents under the front seats. Aside from that, I was glad to see you fit your 6'3" frame into the car, as my son is the same height. Thank You for a great and thoughtful presentation!!! It was very beneficial!! I currently have a 2019 Ford Escape that I just extended my lease on for 6 months. I can cancel at any time so the quest for a new car begins!!!
    I would keep my Escape except that:
    #1 It has NO key!!! Thank God I had a second Key fob, and knew where it was in the house, because I would have been VERY late for work when the first one died recently!!! Because of THAT minor Nightmare I will NEVER have a car that doesn't have a real key again!!!
    Needless to say, I was very happy when I saw a real metal Key in the ignition of the Impreza!!
    #2 The 2019 Ford Escape came with some kind of defect/Recall. Don't remember what it actually was, but when I took it to the dealer to have it fixed, The mechanic told me that there is no guarantee that the problem won't arise again DESPITE the fix, and It cost a Fortune!!! I didn't have to pay because of the Recall, but presumably next time I WOULD have to pay should the problem arise again!! 😳
    So for those reasons I have to get rid of the Ford Escape when the Lease extension is up, OR dump it now if I find a good deal.
    I'm looking at the hatchback Impreza, because it's the Best of all possible worlds: It's a Subaru, which I have always wanted a Forester, but I'm not paying $45,000 for a Forester. $25,000 for a Subaru Impreza is just fine, and hopefully it will last just as long as the Forester would.
    Plus the Impreza has a certain amount of cachêt amongst the younger set who eschew ostentatious Car consumption, and whom might even find it sexy due to it being more environmentally friendly. Please feel free to correct me, or make my assumption more accurate in terms of what age range finds which car appealing!! 😎

    • @Realistick
      @Realistick  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Im glad you enjoyed the video, although, basically all (It’s required to my knowledge) push button start cars do have secret keys hidden inside the fob. That way if the fob dies, you remove the physical key, unlock the car (usually a regular keyhole, sometimes it’s covered by a plastic bit on the door handle or it’s hidden under the handle) and then press the button with the dead key. I’ve done this many many times as a former dealership employee!

    • @MLopez-fu8fd
      @MLopez-fu8fd ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Realistick Thank You so much for telling me about the hidden key!!!
      I'm a FUKKN IDIOT!!! 😜🙄 I cannot believe that I didn't figure that out for myself!! I'm mortified!!
      But thank you for telling me, because I finally figured out how to crack open the Key fob and get to the key!!
      But I think it only opens the door?? So I still would be kinda screwed if the battery was dead and it didn't connect to start the car because that's what happened to me several months ago.
      It had enough juice to let me in the car, because I stupidly did not know there was a key 😖, But the car would not start, so I had to go find the fresh fob.
      In any case., I know this will limit my car choices severely but I'm ok with that, I am NEVER buying another car without a real key and a REAL Ignition!!!!!
      I don't care if I have to end driving a YUgo!!! 🤣🤣🤣..............The panic of not being able to operate my cat sent me right over the edge!!
      But I must thank you again for taking the time to get back to me! That was very kind, and greatly appreciated. 🥰

    • @Realistick
      @Realistick  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@MLopez-fu8fd No worries, although that has a fail safe too. When dead, the key has a chip in it that will still allow the fob to start the car, you just have to hold it on the button (some cars make you do it with the cupholder), again, they just about all have this fail safe so that you can start the car with a dead key!

    I just got the 2023 with 5spd (The last year the Impreza will have a manual transmission). So, I thought I get it. I had a 2018 with the CVT. Both are great cars. With the CVT it is smoother and faster on acceleration, but with the 5spd, feels like a totally different car in a positive way. Not the fastest, but gets the job done. This will be the last generation of manual transmission for the Impreza. Next generation will be CVT only because Subaru wants to sell the eyesight safety.
    I have a 2019 Impreza hatchback CVT and I am getting ~ 41 mpg driving on the east coast. You cannot get 40+ mpg in a gas-only RAV4. The oil filter is under the hood right next to the dipstick which makes maintenance easy. I will agree the tech is "simple" and not as high tech as Honda or Mazda but it's easy to work with (it has physical HVAC control!!!). This car has more cargo than 10th gen civic and Mazda 3. And you should not expect rear ac vents in this class.
    Yes the engine is slow AF but it's not UNDER POWERED unless you live in the mountains, this car is enough to to pass others on highway!
    My biggest complaint is that Subaru is too focused on the SUVs and not putting enough effort to sell cars...
    Hopefully we will get a turbo 1.8 L or the 2.5 L in the next generation.

      @@markhamer5112 In moderate to heavy traffic, I've found that I get better mileage without the adaptive cruise control. The ACC will run right up on traffic until it gets into the sensor zone, whereas an alert driver can get off the gas much earlier and time the approach more efficiently. To be fair, my wife's Jetta is even worse, with the ACC running right up to the set following distance before getting off the throttle. Still, I love the ACC even in heavy traffic, especially when I'm a little tired after a night shift - it's auto-braking has saved my front bumper on several occasions.

    I can't believe they still have the same infotainment system as my '17 has. It almost ruins the car to me, it's disappointing and laggy and riddled with bugs. How hard is it to program a simple OS for a car? I feel like they could hire a small team for a million bucks and come out with a better OS than what they currently have. It feels like they're being lazy, I don't know why they would still use the same garbage.

    • @artilleryisbetter
      @artilleryisbetter ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's not weak LMAO - you don't own this car so you don't know what you're saying.
      This car with the CVT is a better choice than the 5MT in the video. The CVT does a good job faking 8 synthetic gears but really holds the RPM in the powerband. This engine really really needs more Torque so it does not need to be revved so high (same issue with 1st gen BRZ)
      I drove it from NYC to FL towing 900lbs trailer and the engine did well passing going 75mph. It's just "weak" down low because no low-end torque.

    • @markhamer5112
      @markhamer5112 ปีที่แล้ว

      Actually, it is not noisy when compared with the competition in the same class. It gets less noise through the easier windscreen than most competitors. It is mainly that the engine noise comes in unexpected ways due to the CVT - at times when a conventional auto would be at lower revs then the CVT is often higher up on the power curve for better efficiency. The other issue people have is that it is quieter at times when they expect it to be at higher revs - then they complain about it having insufficient power because they can’t hear enough engine noise.

    Not updating a car is usually a sign that the manufacturer would discontinue it soon. Based on that logic, I doubt the Impreza will see another generation. Also, the Corolla only gets AWD with the hybrid, so it's essentially a Prius sedan.

    • @Realistick
      @Realistick  ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I disagree that they would discontinue it, but I guess that’s a plausible guess too.

    • @mistamaog
      @mistamaog ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The Impreza was the first Subaru to be built on their global platform, so that's probably why it wasn't updated so soon.

    • @artilleryisbetter
      @artilleryisbetter ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Disagree..... The R&D has been going to the SUVs/Crossovers in Subaru's lineup.....and the WRX and Impreza seem to be getting the short-end of the stick...
      The levorg was just updated and so is the 2024 Crosstrek which both cars are based on a modified Impreza platform. It's unfortunate that Subaru did not have enough supply for the 2021, 2022, and 2023 model year Imprezas. Which hurt their sales.

    • @mistamaog
      @mistamaog ปีที่แล้ว

      @@artilleryisbetter I think it's a real shame too that we don't get the Levorg in North America. That car with a manual would just be perfect here.

    • @markhamer5112
      @markhamer5112 ปีที่แล้ว

      I can’t see Subaru discontinuing it:
      They might if they move to only producing SUV/Crossover vehicles but there is no indication of that strategy:
      They have to do very little to design a new generation as long as they’re making the Crosstrek/XV.
      They would lose too many sales to other brands because most Impreza customers won’t buy in a more expensive segment. Customers will go to other compact sedans/hatches from Toyota, Mazda, Hyundai, etc. This was my situation when I bought a 2017 Impreza, the main option was a non-AWD Hyundai i30 because it had similar internal dimensions including sufficient headroom for passengers taller than 6 foot.
      As to why they haven’t updated the Impreza, I imagine that it leaving it another year has less impact than delaying other model improvements. But I suspect that they might be looking to make more radical changes to the model such as a move to a more radical hybrid electric platform.
      So is it possible that they will discontinue it? Yes, because if they discontinue it like they did the STI then the announcement wouldn’t be expected until next year.
