    I also have a 2020 Impreza, which I bought shortly before Christmas last year, and so far has burnt no oil at all. Furthermore, my wife's Forester with 145,000 km (a bit over 90,000 miles) has never needed an oil top up. In summer dry weather the Impreza is not the fastest car at all... but when it rains, or when ice and snow come, I live in Canada, you won't find a better car to drive

    Extremely helpful video. This type of real world review is much more beneficial to me as a prospective buyer than the cookie cutter “start at the front, down the side, cargo space, test drive” presentations that are so prevalent on TH-cam. I am a recent retiree and am very interested in the 2022 Hatchback for every day driving. Again, this was well done and so helpful for me. Thanks.

    It is a perfect car for commuting. And that’s about it. Great economy. Comfortable. Inexpensive. It could sure use more power. I now own 2 Imprezas. A 2018 and a 2022. The 2018 now has 71000 miles on it. Be prepared to shell out about 800 to replace the spark plugs at 60000 miles. I service it every 6000 miles. I recommend to get at least the premium trim.

    Thank you for sharing. I bought a 2018 Impreza. I do my servicing by the manufacture recommendation. I have never added any oil. My only complaint with the Impreza, is it really needs more power. I think Subaru should put the 2.5 in the car. I also bought a 2020 Forester. It has the 2.5. I think in that vehicle, Subaru should use the 2.4 turbo. The same one used in the ascent. I will be purchasing a new Impreza very soon. I know that Subaru is not going to take my advice. So that means that I'm stuck with the slow 2.0. Also, colors. My daughters,are color fanatics. We wish that the Impreza wiuld have same colors that is available on the crosstrek. We really don't want whit, black or silver. For 2021 crosstrek, has,a new red color. If that is,available on the Impreza, we will want it.

      I’m not changing cars. I just own 3 Subarus. We have 3 drivers in our household. And we all use the cars. I replaced a few older cars with Subarus. I had a Volvo 240 that had over 600 thousand miles on it. Those cars bulletproof. They no longer build card of that quality. We sold our 2015 Nissan Sentra. It only had 100,000 miles on it. But to me, they were junk fresh off the assembly line. I also had a 2007 Chevy HHR. I did not want to sell it to anyone. That car was an embarrassment. So, I donated it. We plan to keep the subies until they self destruct.

    Based on the experiences of several subaru owners/testers, the 2022 subaru legacy with the 2.5 engine will be my choice of car to buy. Some say the impreza feels too light in strong wind situations, plus its 2.0 engine is on the small side. Legacy with 2.5 engine is the perfect compromise.

    I've had 3 Impreza's, my present is a 2020 Impreza premium hatchback. I have 51,000 on it in Dec 2022 and no problems at all. Steering "feel" you talk about ?? I enjoy the steering and feel and it tracks very well. As far as power, it's 152 HP and is not a race car. If you want a FAST car the Impreza is not it and you should choose something else. I think acceleration is very good and on the road it's fine. Oil burn I have never had a problem with using oil and I change at 5K. The Impreza has many great points, first being SAFETY ! I would rather be in a Subaru than most any car made today ( watch crash tests ) and you will be a believer. All around the Impreza is a great car, nice appearance, plenty of room & even more with the rear seats folded down in the hatchback. Eyesight is a great feature and will save you in bad situations. Price is a plus and your not going to find many cars with All Wheel Drive and the features it has for this price. Love Subaru's and will drive them forever.

    What would you suggest to do on the CVT as far as maintenance goes. Subaru of America doesn't say/specify when exactly you should be changing, but I've heard that Subaru of Japan recommends it every 30k miles, so I wanted to see what your thoughts were on doing a CVT fluid change. Thanks again!

    • @CarDietrich
      @CarDietrich  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Well per Subaru of America, the CVT fluid should be checked every 30,000 miles, and, uh, that's it. I don't keep my Subarus that long (three year leases) but if I planned on keeping one long term I think I'd probably have the CVT fluid flushed and replaced somewhere between 60k and 90k miles. Every 30k seems excessive to me, but at the end of the day it's a personal judgement call.

    • @tigerhawk84
      @tigerhawk84 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Quick question, did you follow the break in procedure on all these cars?

    • @CarDietrich
      @CarDietrich  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Engine break in is one of those things that everyone has their own theory on, but yes I did follow a break in procedure on all these cars. What I did was keep the engine under 4,500 RPM for the first 1,000 miles. Also of note, back in the day when the oil change interval was 7,500 miles, Subaru recommended the first oil change at 3,000 miles, then the next one at 7,500 miles and every 7,500 miles thereafter. So on my 2010 Impreza and my 2013 Legacy I did the first oil change at 3,000 miles. I also did a first oil change at 3,000 miles on my STI because it had a high performance engine, but I didn't bother on my 2016 Forester or my 2020 Impreza, I just did the first change at 6k miles on both of those per factory recommendation.

    sir,excellent video. wez have in our fleet a 2022 Imprea,base model,five speed manual ,twenty three thousand out the door in about Januarry of 2022 . I have not driven said vehicle,nor do I want or need to but I am going to do all oil changes based on all the viideos I have watched on youtube to include scotty kilmer and others. Just as you said quote unquote,a guy could go ten thousand miles between oil changes if......Well ,also a guy could instead of the recommeded six thousand miles interval do three thousand. that is what I am gonna do. presently said subaru has about two thousand miles at about six months. we only buy,drive manual shift vehicles,automatic s are boring. so in essence they,subaru can keep their four free oil changes,I will do it myself.I already have purchased subaru oil and subaru filter at the dealership to the tune of sixty ,seventy dollars. as scotty and others say over and over...oil is cheap,engines are pricey

    But here is what I have picked up concerning subaru. sitting at the desk in the subaru building the last category of options was extra protection. carshield advertises constatly on re run channels. saying that when your car breaks down ,and it will,you can spend thousand s......the subaru dealership,corporation wanted about seven thousand to provide their carshield type coverage. seven grand was one third of the out the door price,and the price was less then than now. so there is that. I would have purchased a toyota or honda,only. and I would guess they are going to do the carshielf deal ,but toyotas and hondays dont need much or anything. subara ,not so much. so that is my two cents on subarus

    As the owner of a 2013 Impreza Limited, would recommend your 2020 Premium as being a good buy in today's auto market. As for oil consumption, mine never burned any and I change it at 6,000 miles as the oil starts getting black after that. With the filter on top of the engine, I extract the oil with a vacuum pump. Had it drained a few times and can get more out with the extractor. Would not recommend 10,000 mile intervals with the blue Subaru (Fram) filter as it is not designed for it. Rather, the black Tokyo Roki filter is much better made but hard to find in the US.
    Keep in mind the CVT may need service as the car ages: mine had the solenoid pack go out at 80,000 miles, which causes the dash lights to go on and the car to accelerate sluggishly until it is replaced under warranty (as long as the car is still under 100, 000 miles). My dealer lent me a new Impreza during the repair, and it is a quieter car than the 2013, with a much better stereo. What bothered me about the steering on the 2020 is the tugging on the open road as the car corrects for lane centering. Glad my '13 doesn't have that feature.

    • @CarDietrich
      @CarDietrich  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you for your input Moss. Just FYI if your dealer ever sticks you in another loaner with Lane Keep Assist, there is a button on the right side of the steering wheel with an icon of a car in between two lane lines, that button toggles the system on and off so it will stop tugging on the steering wheel. I usually leave that off on my car.

      AWD as a daily ride is a personal preference. I noticed no difference w 2 vs 4 on daily driving (city).
      The car manufqcturer makes engines that routinely eat oil and in my experience has history of major failures right after warranty runs out.
      Recommending them *on reliability* comes across as naive, emotional or irresponsible. 😭

    • @CarDietrich
      @CarDietrich  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well you can call it whatever you like, but personally I have had five Subarus and in my immediate family we have had eight of them total. So if I recommend one of these cars to anyone, based on reliability or any other factor, at the very least I am putting my mouth (and my advice) exactly where my money is. If you don't like Subarus that's fine, don't buy one.

    Really interesting how your STI burned less oil than your Impreza. Would it be safer to change your oil at 3,000 miles? I have a 2020 Forester that was bought on June 1st of 2020 and still have not done my first oil change. It currently has 3,400 miles and I would like to know if I should wait till 6,000 miles to change it. Great video and keep up the awesome work!

    • @CarDietrich
      @CarDietrich  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Well Subaru's official maintenance schedule for your Forester (and all new Subarus) is 6,000 miles OR six months, whichever occurs first. So based on that you might want to get your oil changed sometime soon, but I wouldn't worry about it too much. As for 3,000 mile intervals I wouldn't recommend that, if you find your particular engine is consuming oil just top it off between oil changes. Of course bottom line you can't hurt the engine by doing proper oil changes, but it's a cost/benefit analysis. An extra quart of oil and a couple minutes checking/topping off will give you the same benefit as an oil change at 3,000 miles vs. 6,000 miles. Thank you very much for watching!

    I am having concerns about acceleration so I decided to check youtube for people's opinions, ...I find this guy's detailed and honest review and I find him editing his discussion about acceleration 3:15 ...I am so disappointed. I guess its terrible. I am considering a manual.

    • @CarDietrich
      @CarDietrich  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I think I edited it because whatever I said after that made no sense. The acceleration is not great. On the other hand it's not horrible. FWIW I did hit an indicated 125 MPH in that car the other day, which was faster than I figured it would go.

    • @tigerhawk84
      @tigerhawk84 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Read up on the manual impreza, especially the current gen (2017-present) as multiple people report that oil consumption is considerably higher on the manuals. It seems like higher RPMs can exaserbate the issue and that's what manuals do. The CVT seems to keep it below 4k rpms unless you are flooring it.

    • @sezwo5774
      @sezwo5774 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@tigerhawk84 I've heard about this some time ago, didn't really pay attention, somebody was even putting a catch can on a non-turbo Impreza because the oil was prone to "evaporate" or something. It was supposed to also help with carbon buildup on valves in the Direct Injected engine. Thanks for mentioning it. I'll have to read about it. I think the Impreza is a great car and the last of the manuals in a regular commuter car, ...but unfortunately under-powered, especially at higher elevation. I live at 4900 feet above sea level, that gives me a more than 20 percent power loss. I am hesitant to buy, but don't have a problem driving a slow car fast, meaning revving it hard. Though now I am thinking direct injection carboning valves, plus what you mention, problems with oil consumption, ...this might turn out to be too much. I keep my cars for very long periods.

    I was watching your video (which I liked as well as several of your other Subaru videos) and I'm seriously considering adding the sti flexible strut bar to the front of my 2018 Crosstrek. I've read mixed reviews. In your opinion is it worth it for possible improvements on the steering as I'd like for my car to be a bit more agile and sometimes in tight parking situations I don't have as much confidence in my parking as I would like. Thanks!

    • @CarDietrich
      @CarDietrich  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thank you for watching Christopher! As far as the STI Strut Tower brace, if you add this you may notice slightly sharper handling at higher speeds, but I don't think it's going to help low speed maneuverability/accuracy in parking. The Strut Tower brace is meant to add structural rigidity, which reduces chassis flex, which really only happens at higher cornering speeds. So if the main goal is to improve low speed maneuverability, unfortunately it isn't going to do that for you I don't think.

    Im guessing the class action lawsuit was about the head gasket issue prevalent in Subis. Correct me if im wrong. The boxer engine inherently has head gasket issues.

    • @CarDietrich
      @CarDietrich  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The Subaru's that had serious head gasket issues were the non-turbo 4 cylinders from the late 90's to early 2000's. Boxer engines do not inherently have head gasket issues, but they are more prone to burn oil. There was a recent class action lawsuit about that on certain Outback and Legacy models. However as I said in the video, across the five Subaru's I've owned I haven't had one burn oil excessively.
