    I don't know when you started your channel-- I just clicked on your video by chance, but you honestly deserve way more views and subscribers. I was trying to figure out what kind of keyboard to get, and thanks to your informative vid, I figured out I wanted both a membrane and mechanical keyboard. Membrane one for work (cause I do lots of online teaching/video calls, so I don't want ppl hearing me and getting annoyed while tying lol), and a mechanical one because I purely enjoy typing and like that tactile and audible feedback (so I can switch to this one whenever I'm just typing docs or when I'm on break). Thanks again man, and I appreciate you splitting up your vids based on what you're discussing. Some content creators don't consider that stuff. Good luck with everything!

    I loved this video. Great explanation of all the keyboards. I had a membrane in my early years, and it had to be replaced often. I am a very heavy typer, on the computer all the time. I went from that, to my very first mechanical keyboard, which was blue switches. I loved it, even loved the sound. The feel was so much superior for me over the membrane. My E cap was wearing down, and replacing the keycaps were just too much for me, as it cost the same as the keyboard, so I opted to replace it with an optical switch keyboard. Mine is the Apex Pro by SteelSeries. There is one thing about optical you did not mention that I thought I would bring up here.
    Since the keyboard relies on light in order to actuate, the actuation point can be adjusted. You can have it set so that an extremely light tap of the key so it barely moves will actuate it, or, you can make it so that you have to bottom the key out in order to actuate it. That is how the SteelSeries Apex Pro works. I love it. So during games, I can have my WASD keys very sensitive, yet, I can make the key for throwing a bomb require a further press so that I do not accidently press it. You can even set one key to do two different things with "Dual actuation", which the SteelSeries has. Not all keyboards with optical switches have these features though. There are a few limitations though to such a setup. First, since you can adjust the actuation, these keyboards do not come in the brown or blue style switches. They are all in the style of reds (AKA linear). For me, I find if I set the key to be 100 percent bottom out requirement, sometimes they won't register. Similarly, if I set it to completely sensitive, I find the keys will easily accidentally register. So having them at the extremes is not the best idea. It's amazing how far keyboards have come from the late 90's. I love it!

    I was used to membrane keyboards because of school and I didn't like them because of the feel of them (like 5 years ago), but I thought all the keyboards that look like those were going to feel the same, I liked laptop keyboards more and I decided to go with MX Keys but my fingers started to feel tired after a day of work, I used it for 4 months then I started to search for alternatives and found the different types of keyboards, now I'm using keychron Q1 and it's been great, feels great and sounds great if you're willing to mod it. Keyboard switches can be rubber dome (membrane or capacitive), cross contact (cherry MX and many others go here), plate spring (alps), buckling spring (membrane or capacitive), beamspring, hall effect, optical, reed switch, scissors, magnetic valve... probably a bunch of other switches I'm not thinking of right now. Each of these types of switch sound, feel, and electrically behave completely differently. It's really neat to look into how they work.
    Rubber dome keyboards are usually cheap, but don't forget about Topre, who makes extremely nice capacitive rubber dome keyboards that cost hundreds of dollars. Also, while not rubber dome, ye olde Model M is actually a membrane keyboard. The buckling spring mechanism causes a flipper to drop down on two membranes, pushing them together to make contact.

    Good video covering the 3 most common variants. You forgot Hall Effect switches though - i.e. Lekker switches from Wooting or the Flux keyboards (granted the later is brand new and didn't exist a year ago) - also brand new in this matter DrunkDeer with budget keyboards using Hall Effect switches...

    Thanks for letting me understand what's going on with these categories of keyboard key types.
    Are there ortholinear (or staggered column) membrane keyboards? I'm thinking entry level nothing crazy. I have dyslexia and just want to see if the straight columns are easier for a dyslexic to touch-type on.

  • @pandabird714
    @pandabird714 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Very informative without going too deep into the mech jungle. I made that mistake two years ago when finding out mechanical keyboards exist. Spent way too much time looking at videos about "thock" when it all boils down to comfort. It was all too pricey until i finally found my entry point at 20 euros. It's not even hotswap but it has real switches, is wireless and compact sized, perfect to use with my laptop. Reason why i seem to like "browns" is because of the membrane feel being close to heart. Having spent decades typing on membranes, of course a linear press feels alien to me. Meanwhile "clickies" are plain annoying. Just a hint to other people wondering. It's down to your taste, there is no good or bad if 90's Logitech keyboards are your definition of feeling at home typing.
