“How did we get here” the famous words of every person hearing this song for the very first time haha I love these reactions bc they’re so genuine and raw and real
OK here's the reason why you can't find the one. II (the drummer) moves the one A LOT. Most Sleep Token songs are actually in 4/4 contrary to popular opinion. BUT....... sometimes II is ahead of the one, next measure he's slightly behind the one. Do that in a pattern and it sounds like some creazy time signature but really it's just 4/4 with the one transposed over and over and over. It's actually super clever.
@@HIM_066xMusicReactions The thing about II is this. He's 100% a gospel drummer. Think Tony Royster Jr., think Thomas Pridgen. All those linear patterns and improvisation fills. He's just playing gospel drumming over all the genres. That's the coolest part about this band. I don't care if he's doing metal double kick stuff, his hands are still all 100% gospel chops. You should check out his drumeo video if you want to geek out on it. He plays all their biggest tracks in that video. It's here on youtube. Just search for "Sleep Token Drumeo". It'll be the video that's like 20 minutes long or something like that. It's mostly performance so if you're into watching sick drummers. It's a fun time.
“Life is dark. Life is bright. Life is ugly. Life is beautiful. Don’t get lost in genres, they’ll only disorientate you. Music is for everyone.” -Vessel 2017
The lore behind sleep token really is worth looking into. A very short and simple explanation is that vessel was visited by a deity named “sleep” and the two have a tumultuous relationship. Vessel offers songs as offering or “tokens” if you will, to sleep but as you listen to the rest of the album of take me back to Eden, you’ll see vessel is tired and done and wants to break free from this, essentially, abusive relationship. There’s much much more to it and I recommend just taking a dive into it
My favorite song of theirs is Atlantic. It’s not just my favorite song by them either, but my favorite song of all time hands down. It’s one you have to be ready for.
"This guy can sing!" and "I have no idea what to expect!" - Okay, he did a cover of OutKast's Hey Ya. Go listen to that, but bring an extra pair of pants because I think you're gonna shit yours. And then just jump in and go from the beginning through the whole discography. It is so, so much better if you listen from the beginning in order. But if you really wanna get a taste of Vessel's talent, go listen to Hey Ya. Loving these reactions, subscribed to watch Sleep Token blow you mind even more! 😄
Vessel is my favorite singer. His vocal range is God Tier... he's got a smooth, buttery baritone thats nice to wrap around you like a warm blanket, but his falsetto is ridiculous 😂. And he's so comfortable going between his chest voice and falsetto, its crazy 😄. I hope you do the deep dive with them. All their songs are different and keeps you on your toes. There's not one song by them that i dont like. Hopefully you'll enjoy them all too. Love the reaction! Glad you're going to do them weekly, gives me something to look forward to. I love watching people fall in love with this band like I did. Til next time ✌️ Worship ❤
Their drummer is gummy good and takes inspiration from all over the place, including edm, prog and gospel :D He's been winning prices for his drumming since this album came out
I think, without really trying to verify it, the reason you found the intro so confusing was cause the instruments were basically playing a 6/8 melody over a 4/4 click, while the hihat and vocals followed the 4/4 click. I might be off on the specifics, but it's something like that. And I'm sure the first verse is actually in 4/4
Yeah I said something about the rhythm in my own comment. ST and II in particular tend to use polyrhythms in their music and it can be confusing at times to people who are so used to hearing everything in 4/4
It took me 8 listens to get used to this one. When I saw it live for the first time it was a real highlight with everyone singing along. I saw a video that was recorded by the promoter from the balcony and we were LOUD! Somehow, they can make it even better from the stage!
My good sir, you have just scratched the surface. You really should go back and start from their first album, Sundowning, then move through This Place Will Become Your Tomb, then Take Me Back to Eden. You are in for an emotional roller coaster ride. Vessel's voice and their over all sound, as you've said, is an experience. Vessel has a way of just...make you FEEL...everything. So many songs will bring up so many emotions. Strap in and hold on tight. #Worship, my friend, #Worship.
You probably won’t be able to easily find a rhythm to “bop your head to” because II (the drummer) is notorious for using polyrhythms. So I kind of like sway side to side almost like a snake when I groove to ST music
If you go to Drumeo's channel, they have a few videos of II, the drummer. He has added a live solo into the summoning that he plays...it is definitely worth a check out!
So excited that you plan to react to more sleep token. They are the whole package with lyrics, production, vessel’s voice, II’s drumming, the genres, etc etc ❤️
You should watch the drummers play thru of this song. He does a drum solo thru that empty section. Hes a ridiculous drummer. Hes also made changes to the song since the studio recording. The video with Drumeo is the one youll wanna watch
Back again to see you get taken on the Sleep Token roller coaster. Love to see someone else experience their awesomeness in real time. Love to see the switch-up caught someone else by surprise too. Much love, much peace, keep bringing these good vibes.
The groove or "beat" can be a little difficult to pick up on with the prog in there, but the entire song, through all of the switch-ups, is in the same 4/4 - 173 bpm time signature. (which is wild) Feeding off that last part of this song, check out Aqua Regia next. It's very smooth, jazzy, and soothing.
Listen to it twice...you will find the cadence. I can bob my head to it. They're literally redefining how people perceive Time Signatures. The verses are 2 bars of 6/8 followed by a bar of 4/4, fill at the intro comes in on the 4 of 6/8, but I believe the rest of the song is 4/4.
@@HIM_066xMusicReactions I know it's really crazy! I love it though, I listen to a lot of TOOL and Danny Carey is the king of poly-rhythms, so my brain kind of automatically syncs up with songs like this.
I am as glad as you to have discovered this amazing band that turned my taste of music upside down and they will stay with me till the rest of my life.
The problem is there are measures of 3/4 sprinkled in, or at least it would appear so due to the composition utilizing so many off-resolution notes and the way they jam so many fills in lol
Sleep Token is amazing. They just do something to my brain I can't explain. And the craziest thing is they do it perfect live, it may even sound better live! I love watching the reactions to this band. Another one that changes it up a lot is Kim Dracula, if you haven't heard them yet. Seventy Thorns is good to start with if you want a suggestion, it features Jonathan Davis of Korn.
I will TOTALLY watch you react to the whole TAKE ME BACK TO EDEN album, I really hope you do. Most of the songs tell a story that continues into the next song on the album, so that they all flow together, so to get the most out of the experience it is best to listen to them in order. Also def gonna sub, love you channel.
ii said he is playing groups of 3 over a 4/4 timing. Honestly, after you listen to it a few (or 20) times, it’s easy to hear the 4/4. I’m bobbing to it right now but I’ve listened to it 1000 times. Haha. ❤
Been a Sleep Token fan since about 2019 ish... Trying to understand how you feel about this music is an impossible task, speaking from my perspective, especially live. I got hooked on the song Jaws, and I caught myself just staring off listening to it over and over. My recommendations would be Jaws and Aqua Regia. ~Worship
So glad you’re enjoying it!!!! Yes I will listen to them for the rest of my life. So many good songs to explore! Would love to see you react to Aqua Regia and Levitate and and and and….oh just listen to the whole discography. You will not be disappointed!!!
if you havent listened to them yet you should listen to Rush, Dream Theater, or Tool to get the same experience of "how do i bob my head to this?" also how you get used to bobbing your head to Prog Music. There is other bands, however Sleep Token and the other 3 are the "entry" bands into prog. Also adding in Yes and Pink Floyd.
Try Sugar and Granite. They both follow the same kind of switch-up structure whilst being very different songs. Sugar rarely gets a reaction so you'll get a damn monopoly on it and granite gets a lot of love on TH-cam. Do it as a double feature and you'll f*cking smash it
Sleep Token do their own thing. No one can do what they do. BUT, there is another band who does something similar (genre-bending). FALLING IN REVERSE - check them out. You won't regret it. If you do, I recommend checking out WATCH THE WORLD BURN or POPULAR MONSTER.
With the tempo issue, if you follow the high hat at the beginning of the song you’ll find that it’s at 173 and in 87 at certain points for half time. The time signatures also change, but if keep the constant 173 at the heavy section/ movement, you’ll find it’s easy to follow with.
They're fun because they're very much like Tool with their counts. It is hard to follow but it makes sense. I've never actually encountered a band that could do Tool type things well and still be totally their own thing.
I love your reactions to Sleep Token. And I feel you would prefer the,"less heavy," let's say. So I'll clue you in on the songs I think you'll really like. Aqua Regia, Rain, DYWTYLM(Do you wish that you loved me?), Fall for me, The Apparition, Dark Signs, and Sugar are all incredible songs and aren't as heavy. A couple of them aren't heavy at all. I really hope you continue to do Sleep Token reactions. Much Peace and Love to you and yours and thank you for your time and consideration.
Vessel has all the range a singer could hope for lol. Even live, his vocals are incredible and arguably better than the studio with all the extra runs and ad libs he does. I recommend checking out some of their live stuff if you can.
So their entire discography is a story, a lot of people think it’s about a relationship with some goddess called Sleep. Only problem with that is Veasel refers to asleep as a he and said sleep resides in our subconscious. These songs are about a relationship, very toxic on both sides and how he comes to terms with things. I won’t ask you to go back any further than sundowning, but the story starts with ep One
Beat is off because it’s off tempo if you’re looking for a normal 4-4 frame. The chorus is the only thing that keeps a relatively normal structure. I highly suggest starting at the beginning album and working your way through, the payoff with the final song through the trilogy (Sundowning, TPWBYT and TBMTE) is so worth it.

My dude is a MASTER of lagging the beat with the snare I love it so much!
He likes to use unresolved phrases or triplets in a 4/4 structure for example, feels janky in my bones but keeps you guessing the whole time!
He keeps the beat in the high hat at the beginning pretty consistent, which helps keep it straight for me.

WIll do ty friend for putting me on
I’m pretty sure the summoning is all in the 4/4 time signature. I think the snare is just desynched from the guitar and bass at the beginning.
It is..the Intro and the fills are a bit offset but, it's 4/4.
I saw them live in May, it was the best concert I’ve ever been to and I would recommend seeing them live if you could someday! Amazing reaction
Meshuggah are the masters of polyrhythms, give them a listen. Absolutely mind-bending musical structures.
If you think this beat/instrumental is hard to follow, try reacting to Tool's song called "Pneuma"
Man u dont have to pull tool out just yet. And theres is the dance of eternity 💁🏻♂️

The time signature is 4/4 with kicks on every third beat of an 8th note pattern. Follow the high hat and you'll feel the 4/4

I’m here for the 13:15 reaction 🥰🫠
what confuses u is probably the melodic drumming instead of the classic rhythmic one, it always feels jazzy for me

Odd time signatures
its 3x3s and 4x2s, 4 times over to make 68 beats I think? along them lines
HeadBob at 1/4 ratio
I couldn't find the rhythm to save my life lol
Ironically they do do folk
I KNOW its in 4/4 but the emphasis is on 3...I just dont know what that means xD
It’s in 6/4 then it changes mid intro into 3/8
It's polyrhythmic I think.
🤔
Emotional math. That's why you're not following. Good reaction.
I think it’s an intentional dissonance to demonstrate an almost irrational desire for someone or something.
Hm... well I'm not very good at finding the beat to begin with, but I don't think syncopation or polyrhythms are very rare...
Looping?
In the beginning, it sounded like the instrumental looped 1 time
Mgk isn't a rock artist and his music is trash
"I dont know if they do Folk music"
close enough? :)
