Roy Head was a fabulous performer. Great Heart! I had the privilege of Going on stage with him as a young girl. He was debuting Treat her right on the Larry Kane show. Me and three other girls were known as Roy Head's gogo dancers in 65, can't believe I found this clip.
Roy is the boy the man the daddy BiG TIME always delivered his best & he still rocks my soul & this baby still gets em a DANCUN !! . God bless you Roy !! . With the most soulful regards from the UK & the global brotherhood .
Thank goodness for this old black and white footage. If you told someone you saw the great Roy Head do this in a nightclub,no one would have believed you. Just incredible. When I was in high school this song with the 'shady' lyrics was a big hit on the radio. But this nightclub act is incomparable ! I know Roy was very well known and popular in Texas but I just don't think he got enough credit for his superb talent nationally. Great dancer and very, very good singing voice. RIP Roy. We love you.
Loved Roy Head. Sad to hear of his passing. Saw him a number of times when he played in San Antonio, usually at the Municipal Auditorium. Thanks for the great memories, Roy.
I am impressed Mr. Head was featured at a jazz festival. Cool!!! My dad was in the record biz. He was A&R man for Cameo Parkway. One of its writer's Kal Mann wrote the lyrics to Elvis's "Teddy Bear" Yes Roy Head is still performing in Texas.
On this day in 1965 {October 9th} Roy Head performed "Treat Her Right" on the ABC-TV program 'Shindig!' A little over one month earlier on September 4th it entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart; eventually it peaked at #2 {for 2 weeks} & spent 11 weeks on the Top 100 One month and four days later on Nov. 13th, 1965 he was back on 'Shindig!' and performed the song again R.I.P. met dank aan Vic van de Reijt' GROOT 45-TOEREN BOEK, waar ik een heel verhaal vond over deze prachtige soulsong. Nooit eerder van deze artiest en dit liedje gehoord, en kijk, dankzij TH-cam gaat deze oorwurm niet meer uit mijn hoofd de eerste dagen! Tijdloos mooi, prachtige lenige soulzanger!
Catacombs, possibly? I was working at KNUZ in Houston in the mid 60's. He came in to visit with old friends. I had no idea, at that time, just who he was. Boastful, unafraid, full of himself. I thought, "What a character". That night I MC'd his show at a local club, The Catacombs. I thought to myself as I observed from the side of the stage..."I've NEVER witnessed ANYTHING in my life with this much energy behind it"! From that moment up to the point when I MC'd a concert for James Brown, did I think I would ever see anyone as powerful a singer as Roy. LEGENDARY! Roger W. Morgan. (I was "Jim Hunter" at the time.)
On this day in 1966 {May 21st} Roy Head performed "Treat Her Right" and "My Babe" on the late Dick Clark's American Bandstand... Seven months earlier on September 4th, 1965 "Treat Her Right" entered Billboard's Hot Top 100; eventually it peaked at #2 {for 2 weeks} and spent 11 weeks in the Top 100... "Treat Her Right" also reached #2 on Billboard's R&B chart... And two months earlier on March 12th "My Babe" entered the Top 100 for one week at postion #99... R.I.P. Mr Clark...
This is so funny. Found out my dad played w/Roy Head while he was in college at SWT in late 60s. I wasn't born until 72 and my dad is now a former USSA Secret Service Agent. Never knew my dad had a wild side. LOL Didn't learn this until a year or two when I went with my dad to San Marcos for one of the Traits funerals. I wonder what else I don't know. HaHa. If anyone has any Cheatham St. Warehouse videos let me know. THX
Thanks Blinko, WOW!!! Texas on a Saturday night in the early '60s. Pure Gold. Does Roy have the best moves ever in Rock and R n B? Long live Rock n Roll. Is Roy still with us and in San Marcos?
Just had to tell you that, yes, Roy is still around. I just saw him on The Voice. His son, Sundance Head is a contestant and they showed him at home with his dad.
On this day in 1965 {November 13th} Roy Head performed "Treat Her Right" on the ABC-TV program 'Shindig!'... Two months earlier on September 4th it entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart; eventually it peaked at #2 {for 2 weeks} and spent 11 weeks on the Top 100... It reached #8 on the Canadian RPM Tracks chart... Six years later in 1971 Barbara Mandrell covered it; she version, titled "Treat Him Right", peaked at #12 on the Billboard Hot Country Singles chart...
We weren't singers. We worked up a dance routine and danced on stage and through the crowd. We had white fringe dresses with white go go boots. It was a dance show like Dick Clark's and the Shindig. I've never seen the clip. I have tried to find it. I am under the impression that it is only in the archives of channel 13in Houston, Texas. Roy lived in the apartments behind me and was a friend of my mother. Please let me know if you run across something. Still in Houston. Vicci
When I played with Rusty Wier in the latter 80s we played with him in Austin, I believe. He dove off the stage and broke his little finger. Never missed a beat.
It's that stage dive that gets me. You won't ever see Justin trying that stunt! What I find interesting is there are about a half dozen performances by Head from the same era on TH-cam, some lip-synched like this one and some live, and each one has its own choreography.
very self assured and confident, but friendly, easy to talk with - i last saw him perform 4 or 5 years ago at New Orleans Jazz Fest - the year before that at the Ponderosa Stomp - for all I know, he may still be performing - although he's got to be near 70
Oh he can !! Joe just watch him go !! . Anyone who digs Roy SURE GOT GOOD TASTE . !!! SOULFUL REGARDS TO YOU BUD ! stay safe and keep a DANCUN !! hey hey hey !! .
Thanks for the reply; guess we had a little misunderstanding concerning the R.I.P. It was for Dick Clark, who passed away on April 18th of this year, he was 82... Roy Head will be 70 years old come this January 9th and according to Wikipedia Mr. Head is still recording and performing music... Thanks again...
Original vocals on this recording still exist if so AI would have a fun time resorting to Roy love Head's glorious glory 😤 😂 fantastic recording 🙌 👏 😀 ❤️
Um, yes. He toured with James Brown for awhile and he (Brown) had him removed from the shows because Roy was showing him up with some of his moves and didn't like the competition. True story.
Part 2. He would go around town looking for convertables get in front of them and shoot streams of water back on them. It was Hillarious. He would kick out his leg yelp and say 'Oh Danny don't hurt me" HAHAHA. He was he nicest guy. I went to court and helped him get out of a ticket once. Remember I'ts a Mad Mad world where Jerry Lewis jerked the wheel and ran over the Chief hat? That was him. IM 63 now and this was in 1967, 68, 69. What a character! His name was Michael Angelo True story
That man has soul pumping through his veins which he sounds like a cross between James Brown and Joe Tex just listen closely and draw your own conclusion on who Roy Head sounds like which I encourage and comment if he sounds like James Brown or Joe Tex
You are 100% correct. I never did get a chance to see him. I did see the Four Tops and Temps and others in Calif years ago. There is a group masquarding around calling themselves the Temptations, they are terirble..

I am still crushing on him. So glad his son revived the song. Sundance did a great vocal but ooo Daddy Roy did it all. This is a feel good song.
Vicci Haynes-Wesselhoft
wow for you
hey hey all right!
this song really moved a best friend back in 66 to pantomime it
wow i want to see YOU!
I remember the Larry Kane show in Houston, Texas; use to listen to it . Mr. Head had some good dance moves.also I love this song!

There is no performer today with anything remotely like Roy's charisma or stage presence. Thank goodness for this old footage.
Agree

Roy Head ...... How awesome can you get. (RIP)
Roy Head was my neighbor back in the early 70s. His daughter and I were friends. Sadly he passed a couple years ago.
Quite a performance. He was a big hit on Black radio back in the day well deserved.
Loved Roy Head. Sad to hear of his passing. Saw him a number of times when he played in San Antonio, usually at the Municipal Auditorium. Thanks for the great memories, Roy.
I grew up wanting to be like Elvis, but when I saw Roy head and soulful moves and singing the perfect song and having fun man ! I wanna be like Roy
Roy Head just left the building yesterday. A one-hit wonder, but a good one at that. RIP.
Maybe this wasn't a hit where you lived, but it was in Houston. th-cam.com/video/MLZxeJJonF4/w-d-xo.html
My brother and I learned most of our high school dance moves from Roy Head, along with James Brown. We all owe him a great lot of gratitude.

I ended up here because of OUATIH. Sure I'm not the only one!
Tarantino helping us discover great music.
Not me. The commitments brought me here.
Actually, Doug Sahm wiki to Roy Head wiki...
Sad to say I had never heard this before the OUATIH. Thanks Q.T.!
No sir, you are not alone!
Mr. Roy Head is the ONLY performer of his era who could challenge the title of "the hardest working man in show business" Mr. James Brown!! Thanks.
This guy was an athlete who knew how to dance..
Some of the mosts bizarre moves I've ever seen. Love those licks at the beginning.
I think he's having a - ''spaz'' - attack .
mike galia I know, the moves are more like modern interpretive dancing or something like that.
mark y you think it could be a conniption fit ?
mike galia lol, I doubt it, but I like to watch him anyways
mark y seriously-love Roy Head . but just love poke fun at the dances or suits they wore in the day . any suggestions ?
Wow! I've never heard of this guy. He deserves a lot more airtime. Way ahead of his time.
Passed away very popular in the late 60s and 70s
The song was a big hit.
those opening credits playing with this song and cliff&rick in the car was the best payoff to a year of waiting
Once upon a time in Hollywood :)

"aw, you're lookin' good baby!" Roy Head's the bomb.
Whar energy! Man, this guy had the moves down pat.
What you see in this video is just how he is. VERY animated individual, and a completely cool guy.
