I don't agree with Doug on the looks. The second gen is still a looker but the 1st gen V10 models are outright gorgeous automobiles. A somewhat simple, elegant timeless shape that is as attractive today as 15 years ago. To me from a styling standpoint one of the best cars ever designed
I agree, Im not sure what Doug is talking about, I have a 2018 R8 and I live in LA in an area full of super cars and heads are constantly turning to look at my R8
Reasons why some buyers go R8 and not Huracan are also: 1. price tag 2. practicality (there's no room for tall people in a Huracan) So the R8 is not only about the ''I want a discreet supercar''.
I’m still confused on why the R8 is going full electric once they already have the E-TRON GT. The R8 is a staple in the super car industry and for it to go fully electric will not justify that high price tag it will have.

I still remember when the R8 first came out in 2008, it was one of the first cars I truly fell in love with. My family took a trip to Germany that summer, and I saw one parked on the street while walking around Berlin, debut color with the silver and black side blade. I was so giddy, but also super shy to take a picture with it, haha. My dad egged me on to take it though-really wish I could find that picture. I always worried that I'd never get the opportunity to own one by the time I got older. Seeing as the LFA is most definitely out of the question for a while, I hope I can pick one up in a few years. The current gen might not be as special as when the original came out, but to me, this car still has a captivating, magic touch. Super sad to see the V10 go.

They just changed small things on the R8s design over the years, because it already looked perfect on the first gen. Anything they change has a high probability to worsen the look. This happened to the head and tail lights in all the following versions. They got edgier and this doesnt work too well with the silhouette. Every new Audi has more edges now. Its really because they cannot improve the original perfect design. For example, the A5s first gen design and the face lift looked amazing, they couldnt improve that. Just change it, more edges now, head lamps and grille edgier, less cool. Its hard to have really cool designs nowadays, because everything already existed. Thats why BMW has to place some giant ass cheeks as a grille on the M4. The R8 still looks cool, though.
The last of a given line will be sought after like you say Doug and I'm sure people will want this final hurrah of the V10. I've personally not really cared for the interior presentation of the R8, but love the outside and sound.
At first I was going to say I don’t have a problem with the manual seats at all, because it’s not that hard to pull a lever and scoot it wherever you want. But then I remembered on every car I’ve driven with a manual driver seat, I let go of the lever and it either goes forward or back into the notch, and I can never get it exactly where I want it. If this has a mechanism that really lets you position it anywhere, I think that’s fine for people who don’t share the car with another driver.
Noooohhhh! Should've made next R8 a hybrid, not electric. Detune the engine for fuel efficiency/emissions to 550hp or so, driving only rear wheels, throw electric motors on front axle for like 700-750hp combined
Love that you chose to review it in yellow, looks great on the car. Even though i'm not an Audi fan in general, this car opened new ways for other manufacturers with its cool styling. It always reminds me of the 1998 PS1 game Motorhead, a car named "asc" looks similar.
When driving it sounds like the tire roar is really loud. Hearing Doug can be a problem. Looks really bumpy too and the frunk makes loading things up like groceries a problem. Doesn't actually seem practical as a daily.
I like the fact of no OPF was awesome, but I didn’t really fall in love with this car till the facelift. Now I’d do anything to have one. Being a disabled person, and this supercar being so much more easily accessible than any other as far as comfort, this would be a no brainer for anyone with a fucked up back, neck, and sciatica like me.
Gotta love Doug. Millions of subscribers, million+ views per video, years of TH-cam experience, and still the first thing you hear on the video are wind sounds and background noise. And I mean it, I really do love it. I hate when TH-cam videos get overproduced once TH-camrs make it big. A lone guy with his tripod is what I want to see on TH-cam.
LOVE that the gauge cluster is the only screen. No tech sitting front and center to date the interior like everything else on the market. Clean, simple design and the v10 - these will be driven and desired for a long time.
A really amazing car. I consider myself lucky to have driven in it. Both the V8 stickshift and the V10 automatic. Can't say which one is more fun. The V10 is faster, i know that ^^
@@Monster33336 That's what i said xD *Especially the automatic dual clutch transmission is amazing. But i bet also more expensive to repair if it breaks.
@@TenFalconsMusic I would say this is one of the biggest arguments for the Audi. How many Lamborghini/Ferrari/etc... dealerships are there? While you can just get your R8 repaired at every Audi dealership in the country. At least in my family, Audi had a reputation for being unreliable, but i would bet the alternatives are in no way better. Especially the italian or british exotics. Maybe Porsche and Corvette, but then again they offer no V10's. And they are also very common.
To be honest Doug, I actually prefer manual seats over powered. I always felt like powered seats are a gimmick, and the motor is expensive to replace should anything go wrong with it.. Also, the time it takes to whir a motorized seat into the desired position, a manual seat would already accomplish that.....not to mention the fact that I'm the only person that drives my vehicles, so I barely have the need to adjust my seats.
as I am very sad that they are getting rid of the legendary v10 I wonder how audi would evolve the r8 again. I think they should maybe make a v8 hybrid or something like that edit: you can hate this suggestion if you want
and acually a hybrid that drives longer then 10 miles before it needs to drive off the combustion engine. like 50 miles of range off of a hybrid so you can drive some kinda distance off just the battery.
I like that you mention the price difference, and that it seems to be a lot more expensive. But if you take inflation into account since 2008 to now, its not really that much more expensive.
Apparently Doug hasn't figured out the "key pocket" is actually an alternative ignition option if the battery in your key fob is dead. I have the same thing in my 2015 S5.
I don' really think the next R8 is going fully electric tbh I've read several articles where they quote Audi that even the V10 with a hybrid addition would be an option thought about internally. But it will likely be the same powertrain as in the Huracan model as it would be too expensive to create 2 completely different models when they have 1 base - that wouldn't fit the purpose
Pretty sure the V10 will be gone, rumors have it the next Huracan might not have a V10 either; it's not in any other Audi line-up and emissions aren't very good; if we get lucky the new one might still be offered as a 4.0L V8 hybride
@@Dawwwg Whatever the Huracan will have, the R8 will have it too / or the other way around V10 is a possibility, full EV then actually isn't - apart from a different model (as they might do with the A4) I also think it's gonna be a V8, but Audi / Lamborghini didn't drop the V10 yet; and there's still plenty time till 2035 :P
I don't see how the R8 is a car that people wouldn't look twice at. I've seen two R8's in my life and i've stopped to take pictures of both of them. Just like i do when i see a 488 GTB or a Huracan. I think the R8 looks better than both of those cars. But not in this bright yellow color for sure. Blue , Silver or Black looks better for sure.
Audi has been doing the no power seats thing for "weight reduction" in cars for years and I think it makes the least sense in the R8 because it's supposed to be this touring car/track attack hybrid and so it's a chonky boy. The lightest ones weigh 3600 pounds (as much as my Chevy Impala) and the AWD convertible is almost 4000. And as Doug said, R8 owners put a lot of miles on their cars and would seemingly expect basic features that you get in a $25,000 civic. How much weight could a simple power driver seat (forward, back, and recline) add in weight? 20 pounds?
I might be crazy, but imo power seats is probably the most unnecessary feature. How hard is it, to slightly pull a lever and move the seat yourself? I wouldn't give two shits, if my 5 million dollar car didn't have power seats.
No big screens in the interior to look dated later on, NA V-10, RWD, clean looking outside… I see this appearing on a future Doug video of cars that nobody wanted but now they do and are going up in value.
For a 2022 model I feel like the exterior looks a little bit dated like it’s from a couple years back. It still is nice though. An underrated súpercar. It’s truly a shame to see all these auto makers going electric. I don’t want electric and will never purchase one.
I don’t like the front end but I do think despite its age it’s held up pretty well. You can definitely tell that it’s old but still looks pretty modern. Def looks nice though inside and out regardless.
@@1Nathanc agreed. I do like the back ends simpleness but at the same time it def could be a bit more aggressive, would help give it more of an intimidating look on the road
Man… I live in Colorado, and there is (or used to be) an Audi testing facility where they test all their vehicles in the mountains (for obvious reasons) and I remember when I saw a test mule r8 way before they came out and it was just as breathtaking then, as they are now. What a great super car
Doug, I don't mind hearing that orchestra note when in motion. Great sound either way. Hope to see these start to drop a little more soon. That'll lead to me purchasing one for myself. (: To add to your point about it not being a Huracan. If I needed a Huracan then I'd be looking at one. For a good all around fun car this is such a bargain. Plus that V10!
I really love manually operated seats. In the matter of less than 3 seconds you are in the position you need to be, in stead of waiting for that slow moving electric operated one.
I think Audi will be doing a mistake ditching the V10 for going full EV. Even if it's to comply with emission regulations, that's BS. Ferrari will never have an EV-only line up, because Ferrari's emissions are transferred to Stellaris, its parent company. And for VW to go that way shows a real lack of vision.
This MIGHT be true in America but the EU just agreed to a plan to phase out ICE cars completely by the 2030s, including hybrids. This isn't a matter of product strategy it's a matter of law.
@@wiegraf9009 And Ferrari already said the Italian government will do all they can to get them an exemption. No doubt the German government could get one for the German automakers as well.
A shame to see these cars going the way of the dinosaur. Despite high end EVs making engines with more than eight cylinders mostly irrelevant, there's still something special about these multi cylinder V engine powered cars. BMW has already ended their V12 cars except for Rolls Royce. Mercedes is going to continue their V12s for at least a few more years. I am going to miss these cars.
I still remember seeing my first R8 back in 2008 in the original Iron Man movie. Watching Tony Stark drive that thing around, it really did seem futuristic. What a beautiful car.

I feel so bad for our children and grandchildren. They're gonna grow up in a world with no (new) V8 growls or V10 revs or V12 shifts, everything will be boring and electric, that exact opposite of what a car should be.
Just replaced a 991.1 GT3 RS with a 20 V10 Performance. Two totally different cars and I’ll acknowledge the RS was the “cooler” car, but the R8 is much better to deal with day to day. I wanted to own a V10 while I still had the chance!

I don' really think the next R8 is going fully electric tbh
I've read several articles where they quote Audi that even the V10 with a hybrid addition would be an option thought about internally.
