Firing up and running the Canadian National

  • Featured on the cover of Live Steam Magazine Sept / Oct 2016 issue, Ernie Beskowiney put approximately 7 years and 35,000 hours into the design and construction of this flawless 7.5" gauge live steam locomotive. It is nearly entirely CNC'd out of stainless steel and is slightly larger than 1/8 scale.
The operating pressure is 150 PSI and develops about 483lbs of tractive effort. It has pulled a train of 48 people without blinking. Here is Ernie firing up and running the locomotive at the Bitter Creek Western railroad.
For more information, see the Sept / Oct 2016 issue of Live Steam Magazine, available from Village Press.

My dad fired the real 6060 in the 50s when he worked for CN. We had the chance to ride her in Algoma years ago and the engineer let Pops up into his old work horse for a ride. I thought he was gonna cry. He would love to see your scaled down remake. Beautiful job.

Also ran weekly from Toronto - Niagara Falls and was so popular that CN had to add Wednesday trips. What a great time to be living in Hamilton then. Took that Hamilton - NF leg 3 times and stayed on the side trip to Yaeger to turn her on the wye. Got GREAT runpast photos. Rode her again in 1999 from Stettler, Alberta to Coronation on Father's Day. Got recorded on Greg Scholl's video '6060 Steam Special' that he finally released. They probably think it's a waste of resources (considering it uses liquid fuel and not coal [which is ironic since it might be using diesel, sort of a diesel-steam hybrid], it's also made of what I can assume is steel, and the tracks itself appears to be in a park space that used to have lots of trees that they cut-off for the tracks to have somewhere to be in)

7:23 anybody know what this powder is?
something to lower the boiling point of water?
or did he purchase that from Emmet Brown?

I think it's used to hinder scale formation in the boiler since they're most likely not using destilled water to run these.

When I was in high school, late 1950s, my physics teacher built model engines about twice this size.In the 1940s and 1950s, they were in several zoos and state parks over the state. Then the "OMG what if it explodes" crowd got them removed. He then just had a couple on his farm. Summer afternoons you could ride as long as you wanted for ten cents.

The Betty is magnificent in all respects! The Bitter Creek layout is really nice and their trackwork is smooth and well done. Only thing that could have made this better was having that awesome passenger train painted for CN too!

Thanks for showing the gas burner set up. I was always wondering how that was done.
How big is the gas bottle and how long does it last? Just looking to compare the prices of gas to coal.

And why don't they go to something like this for are transit that would be so much cleaner if they want to bitch about the all the pollution cars and buses emit.
