1/3 scale Darjeeling Himalayan Railway B-Class Steam Locomotive in 7.25" gauge

- This beautiful locomotive was built by John Heald of Rotorua, New Zealand. In this video we take the B-Class out for a typical day at the track, including a sequence of loading the engine onto a custom made trailer towed behind a Honda Jazz (Fit) with CVT. Then it's off to the beautiful River Edge Park Railway in Whakatane, New Zealand. We also take a look at stability of this remarkable locomotive under high speeds using on board cameras. Special adjustable Danly coil springs prevent the locomotive from porpoising; the leaf springs are dummy and just for show. The video was taken on the Whakatane model engineers track on the north cost of the north island of New Zealand. This was the engines third outing from new. All up weight, including fuel is 750kg's, thus axle loading of 375kg's. John Heald, builder.

What a beautiful locomotive, good work John!
Having had the privilege of driving the loco, it is awesome. The power is instant. It takes no notice of the number of loaded ridecars. With vacuum braked ridecars, you have total control with a consist over 2 tonnes on a 1 in 60 descent. I was able to double the speed in less than 4 lengths on a 1 in 60 climb. The engine is great fun on a climb at slow speed as the exhaust note is music as you listen to each beat. John is a very innovative engineer. His engines are extremely well built.

The saddle tank holds 36 litres and well tank 37. This usually gives between 1 and 2 hours running depending on load and track grade. Coal bunker holds a 50kg bag of coal and will easily give an 8 hour run.
How much did it take you to build it. Also, do you make commissions, or atleast a parts list and instructions?

Beautiful loco, that's thousands of hours of work and outstanding craftsmanship well done. Great shots of the motion nicely shot video. My Dad rode on number 19 when it was still in service while he did his national service back in the fifties, and last year me and my brother had the opportunity to ride behind the same loco now owned by Mr Adrian Shooter at the Beeches railway, they are outstanding little locos.

Its amazing how small you can make a steam locomotive
That's big for a small loco, believe it or not! Below that there's 5" gauge, 3.5", 2.5" and a few below that too.
Narrow gauge locos end up looking huge compared to standard gauge locos of the same model gauge, and broad gauge locos look small for the same reason.

I'm from Darjeeling and am a teacher currently based in Kathmandu, Nepal. Darjeeling toy train is something Darjeeling folks hold close to our hearts and would probably can't bear to live without. John Heald has done an amazing job; I bow down to him. Unfortunately, though it has been declared a world heritage, the Indian government has channelled very little resources, financial, or otherwise to preserve this tourist draw and an iconic monument. I have even heard that the workshop in Tindharia - a two hour drive from Darjeeling town -is being converted into a museum. Somebody HELP !!
