- Five years after the debut of the S55, the time has come for a completely new BMW M straight-six engine. The S55 successor - the BMW S58 - will be the face of the M Division for the next few years and provide power to future models as well. It all starts now with the X3 M and X4 M, followed by the next generation of M3 and M4, and later by the next M2 generation.
The technical basis of the S58 is the B58 modular engine, which BMW has been using in almost all model series for some time now. The 3.0-liter engine has now been comprehensively redesigned in order to be able to fulfill the performance requirements of the M GmbH, in addition to the increasingly stringent emission regulations all over the world.

Im just about to get my first BMW for many years - an M340i Touring - I got sold on the B58 motor. Now I see the S58 is just in another league. I bought my first (and only) beemer for its motor - many many years ago. A 3.0Si. I am now doing the same thing but getting so much more. Well done BMW. You've stuck to your guns with this straight six philosophy.'Who knows I might get an M3 yet!
This engine is FANTASTIC. I have the S58 in my G80 M3 with a manual transmission. It’s perfect 👌🏽

Have one in my 2024 X3M....what a beast. Hope it lasts 200k miles with 5 k oil/filter changes.
What about fuel injectors? Is there multipoint injectors or only direct injection? What about carbon buildup on valves?

This engine is breath taking, my wife and I just bought the 2020 X3M Competition last week and it is absolutely amazing and mind blowingly fun.

Basically the S58 engine is the same as or similar to the B58 engine except I can see they've given the S58 much stronger internals.
Really hope this poor guy is either just short with his english or holding things close to chest.
Because this video reminded way too much of a sales pitch at a dealer when you understand more of how the car works than the salesman.
Either way, excited to drive/hear one and see how I like it. I sure miss the song of the s65 in my old e90!

You hit the nail on the head every time I go to my local BMW dealership I know way more than all the salesman so frustrating
Should ask him did he fix the valve cover gasket and engine oil filter gasket leak issue? The plastic gasket cost many BMWowners thousands of dollars repair cost

Notorious if you push it over the limits that the engineers established and modify it. Otherwise, I wouldn't worry.
Bmw is forever changing the crankshaft to get the best out of there engines motorcycle and car

Best thing in the world. My 2024 X3M is a Swiss army knife of a vehicle. Track, drag strip, public roads, offload, tons of passenger and cargo space.
this is a 6cyl, they literally put the b58 bottom and got the head with some upgrades from S55 engines.
510hp, better cranckshaft (I suppose that he means "stronger"), closed deck design D.O.C.H, almost all internals are forged, better fuel pumps (that was a problem on the latest generation)
being honest here, if it is as they're saying, it will be able to take a good beat for the hp race
This one should be easily tuned
The connecting rods aren’t forged they come from the f90 M5 and that ain’t forged so the engine it not forged because of the weakest things that break I have an engine is the connecting rod

Hopefully new Supra GRMN gets this cool engine

It sounds the same as the S55 imo... At this point, I think it's just Bmw's signature turbo straight 6 sound.
In terms of the design, it looks extremely different to that of the B58. How they went about routing the intake tubes is unorthodox.
I've had the BMW M340i for the last 3 years now and i've loved it but its time for it to go back as i always swap my cars after three years. I've got an M4 Competition on build order for delivery in October and i cannot wait. This engine sounds like its going to be immense.

I wish BMW would make an "M540i" with a powerful i-6 motor like this, lightweight interior and less technology with steering inspired by the m240i. Their sport sedan game is weak right now besides the m340i. M235i gc, M850i, M550i, M760li are forgettable cars with big motors designed to compete with mercedes in luxury. That is not the point of a BMW.
They have an M550d and M550i.
@@bmwblog What's the point of your reply? I voiced my idea, and you replied with a car I mentioned as failing to be a good BMW. I know they exist. I don't want a 4300lb AWD sedan that's good on a highway and nowhere else. That's an American sedan. I don't want a 2 series coupe (very good BMW) because its too small and plasticky. I want a decently powerful, lighter, and cheaper alternative to a M550i that handles like my e90. They can get rid of all that stupid gesture control and parking assist stuff that's going to break after the warranty goes out and inflates the price by 10s of thousands. I need an I-6, Bluetooth for phone, navigation, sport suspension, good steering, decent space for friends and a nice exhaust note. The M550i is just a bunch of expensive gimmicks and not a well executed BMW.

Does it still have individual throttle bodies?
Lexus should develop their own inline 6 engine. Their car is very reliable but poor in performance. Except for the LFA
Lexus is Toyota and it's already rumored that the 2020 model IS is supposed to get the B58 from the mk5 and mazdas i6 as options in the future IS models.

It'll be interesting to see how the lowered compression ratio (9.3:1) affects efficiency, or whether the improvements in fuel injection negate the lowered CR.
Why would lower static CR make any difference? Dynamic CR is what's important and that is governed by the camshaft profiles. A lower CR whether static or dynamic means they can use higher boost levels.
It doesn’t get great milage. My g80 gets 18-19 MPG

Stronger block, internals, better cooling, higher redline, better injectors... there’s a lot different
Eyes Open...I’m not sold. Block is the same from the diesel and it’s widely known a JB4 piggyback on the B58 and slight tune you can get 75 whp HP And torque. Rods are the same, both forged. The S58 with twins, run and lower compression and higher boost and thus higher fuel pressure. Again B58 turbo with twins-roll and 11/1 compression offers less lag an less peak HP. Real world dyno on bone stock Supras putting down 340 whp and 400 tq. I’ll wait and see where this ends up..
Jack Chueh you’re never going to be able to make more power with the b58 than the s58... it’s that simple. You can try and rationalize it all day but the s58 is going to be the superior engine
And by the way the block is not the same as the diesel. It shares a crankcase, not a block

I had a camry and had to replace the engine after 100 thousand miles, for 8 thousand dollars the piston blew and its an old car so all cars are expensive

I always thought that about BMWs but in this case it's not the same. This engine is actually very promising in terms of reliability. Do your research.
