The Hot 3 is designed specifically for wildland fire crews. We originally worked with the Los Padres Hotshots to build a pack that rides low on the back and distributes weight through the wearer’s hips and core to maintain mobility and balance during the widely varied operations encountered in the fire environment.
When it comes to my perspective of this pack it is from a backpackers point of view. Not from a firefighters. So as we go through this video please keep that in mind.

From a FF perspective. It's the best pack in the market for us. I've used that exact pack on a hotshot crew and it was great. I now use a brake down version on a wildland engine which is just as good. Very durable and comfortable on those 16hr shifts. If I had a complaint it would be the price but when your a professional you use the best you can get. Thanks for the review.

I'm a wildlandnfirefighter and a backpacker. I just sold my Wildland pack, my osprey Atmos 65 and my Lk35 hunting pack to purchase this one. Your video really helped me decide to make the jump finally. I think this pack will suite all my needs even for 3-4 day backpacking. One of the biggest reasons is most of the places we have been going to lately require a bear vault! Stuff that inside an internal frame backpack and your space is gone! Might as well have an external from at that rate. Plus I'm much more comfortable with a lumber carry design now due to my current Wildland pack. Thanks for an awesome review!

Great review! Although it's made for wildland firefighting it does look like an awesome day pack for hiking.
as a former firefighter who a mystery ranch like this, the top part where you keep your external layers stored is also good for a medical bag called a bowden bag
I am looking to buy the top load version of this so I can stuff all my down in there. What do you think the weight distribution of hips and shoulders do you get? I've been using a Pack Shack Hot line I found used, and the distribution of the lumbar pack with the distribution of weight off my back is great. However, it greatly lacks lumbar support and the one-size-fits-ass is a big too large around the waist without added padding. Would appreciate your input! Nice review!

Those zippered side pockets are for fuzees.
It's a really awesome pack! I think it's a phenomenal day pack. Very comfortable, it really managed the weight and keeps it tight to the body. About the only thing I wish I could change is that the MOLLE/PALS webbing could wrap around forward a bit more. But all in all it's a tremendous day pack.
how is the balance on flat* up hill* down hill* say 25lbs ? how is the heat on your back and wast were you sweeting 1hr in,did remain cool? dose it work with hot2&1 accessory like 3lt water pack?
do the zippers have locking eyelets ?
would you recommend this pack as a hunting day pack ?
After 4 years of fighting fire on a hand crew, the only thing that broke was a strap on the inside of the pack. After you use the pack and adjust everything to comfort you should be able to pretty much run, jump, crawl, climb and sleep with it 👍🏽💪🏽
Simple solution to the strap issue.
Electrical tape thats what most use in the field.
A good Montana company. And the crew is a Hot Shot Crew. Hot Shots are a type 1 fire crew

I imagine that the zippers are water proof because of the fact that these guys get dumped on by fire fighting aircraft out there fighting fires. Looks good to me. Good price too.
That cordura material can repel water but when you do a shift in the rain your shit still gets wet. That's when a cheap light poncho saves you.

Wrong. Those are for fuel sig's or water canteens. There's a box on the bottom made for a fire shelter that can be quickly removed that's he doesn't have attached.
this same pack has saved my back many times. Its much superior to the standard issue for agencies like BLM and the Forest service.
Yeah, from what I have seen so far mystery ranch packs are generally very good in terms of quality. But in the range of 24 ltr - and over here in europe - I'd rather stick with the direct action ghost pack. It is enough for me in terms of civilian/hiking use because all the zippers, duraflex buckles and seams are of high quality as well as the field proven 500d cordua fabric and the laser cut molle webbing. The flexible backframe also carries lots of weight for the packs size. Just a thought for all you guys over here in europe, who can't afford to pay rediculous amounts of import taxes on the very good mystery ranch products and who are looking for a at least somewhat comparable product.
