How to Front Kick with Speed and Power

  • The front kick is usually the first kick you learn how to throw in the martial arts. Here's an exercise to help you throw it faster and stronger!

    ►Click here to buy Ando a piece of pie. Thank you! :D

    ►Take my 7-DAY MARTIAL ARTS CHALLENGE! www.senseiando.com/updates/
    I call this the Free Fall Front Kick Drill. The challenge is to kick with your front front without shifting your weight to the back foot.
    WARNING: If you have issues with your knees or your ankles, keep your feet close together. This is an explosive move!
    Throw the front kick at whatever height you feel comfortable. But remember--no leaning, standing or pulling back!
    The goal is to create a "free fall" feeling, like you're at the top of a roller coaster. You can’t do this in slow motion. It's all in!
    The back foot can either drag behind or drive forward to add the power of your body weight. If you want to practice standing in place, that's fine, too.
    If you can handle it, the next challenge is to widen into a front stance or bow and arrow stance and try the same thing. When your back leg is locked, you can’t cheat.
    One visualization that might help is pretending you're stuck in mud. Imagine you're tugging your foot straight up and kick it forward as fast as you can. That’s the feeling you want.
    Ready for a real challenge? Throw your front kick standing on one leg! Even kicking at ankle height is a killer.
    For a real burn out, try 4 sets of 10 kicks on each leg. 10 and 10 with your feet close, 10 and 10 in your fighting stance, 10 and 10 in a front stance, and 10 and 10 on one foot. WHEW!
    Because it’s not easy to front kick with the front foot without shifting back, you’ll see a lot of kickers, like in Muay Thai or Taekwondo, using a tall, narrow stance. You'll also see martial artists jumping around and constantly switching their feet. All great tactics! Those moves help to hide their weight shifting and make lifting the foot much easier.
    But don't limit yourself! Training for self-defense means I want to be able to kick with either leg from any position, high or low. And even if I never need to throw a front kick from a low, wide stance, training to do it is still a great workout and builds great habits.
    Give it a try! :)

    I practice a similar kick to your drill that we call a hopscotch kick. Without changing your stance at all from a regular position, you just push forwards with you back leg and use your from leg for a roundhouse. One of my favorite combinations is to do a high hopscotch kick before sinking low and using all that energy for a straight punch to the body, and if I'm able to, I'll add in a couple of hooks and uppercuts. Thanks for this drill, I'll give it a shot.

    • @AndoMierzwa

  • @johnnymillar9056

    In my JKD class this is how we train all forward pressure. The stance is 60/40 weight on the front leg and when we do forward punches or forward kicks/side kicks going forward, the idea is to do the technique and footwork with that falling pressure. We're taught never to give ground unless it's to deliberately draw someone in and to maintain that forward momentum using gravity.
    Good video Ando

    Very simple and effective kick, specially fron the hip down on a street fight you dont want anything high and fancy and leave yourself open and balancing on one leg. My Goyu Ryu sensei used to tell us that if on a street fight, keep low.

  • @colanmagill4585
    @colanmagill4585 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    In Tang Soo Do we, emphasize the extension of hip to the extent that we chamber by default. Unfortunately, it can slow down kicks. That makes this a heck of the workout to try and keep kicking fast with the use of hip. Thank-you for the new drill.

    I see a strong similarity to the jab/snap punch with this kick. I teach my students that you always start with a jab since it has the shortest distance to travel and therefore leaving the opponent the least reaction time, where a cross/reverse puch gives just enough time to react in a meaningful way. This front snap kick achieves the same thing but with a kick. This short be indefensible except against someone with lightning reflexes, and as with the snap punch this would be a great way to start of a combination. Thanks for the video, i really underestimated this kick.

    I've been practicing speed front kicks/teep to complement my muay Thai power kick and I must say it's awesome. I'm 55 now and my power kick is getting slower and slower. For speed kick, I'm focusing on genital and knee cap. I didn't know there's specific exercise to improve speed kicks. Thank you for sharing sensei. Have you ever speed kick/teep while laying flat on your back? Also speed side-up-kick/teep while on your side? Teach your student that and they'll love you to death. But beware it has enough power take person head off. You can simulate multiple attackers as well while on your back.

    A front kick is one of the most practical kick of all. It can go low, go mid and go high pretty easy without much pivot needed while still generate moderate amount of force. While there are stronger kicks out there, the most practical ways to kick is just a straight forward front kick . Just a bit of stretches and you can kick the enemy's chin. ( Which btw is very deadly if you have the flex require. I KOed one mma guy who is like very aggressive throwing jabs and snap kick and when he try to grab me that's where he made a mistake , it allow me to grab him instead and force him to get in the position that is best for me to deliver the front kick right to his chin. )

      Keep your knees aligned with your toes, always. Become aware of when your knees aren't in alignment and when they are in a correct position to use force without further damage. Build up Vastus medialis, the part of your quadriceps above and on the inside of your knee caps. Keep knees over toes and never put into an acute angle; a deep knee bend where your thighs aren't level, your butt is low enough to make that angle between your calf and hamstrings an acute angle. The knee is the wimpiest of all our joints. Very poorly designed. Very important not to stretch ligaments of the knee in anyway. Once you've had an injury, you've got an increased potential for re-injury forever. A weakened joint you need to get your proprioceptors to be protecting. For that; stand on one foot, then close eyes...balance. Change foot, close eyes, balance. Don't get frustrated. This speeds up your 'realignment' so your Proprioceptors in your brain and spine can take care of newly re engineered parts making sure they learn their jobs before you make a move that gets you in trouble. Proprioception is like a second brain that keeps you in balance, keeps your body parts working with the weight and timing of your other body parts with gravity. So you don't have to be thinking one step at a time. The side of your knee is very weak. No stretches with the lower leg twisted away from your body, ie) hurdler stretch? Very bad idea. Do not use knee supports except for occasional high risk occasions. Practice proper knee/toe alignment. Should probably include the hip as well, open your hips as if you were riding a horse, not a 2X6 rail. Running shoes only for running. Cross training shoes or court shoes for any lateral workouts.

    • @stormytrails
      @stormytrails 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Bummer having to adapt to change...? Do not do the roundhouse kicks, sweetie...that involves the side of your knee to be strong. Think of your arm or leg as a tool with hinges. Don't turn the tool on its side where it is weakest. The strongest kick involves joints that are aligned straight on, never sideways. If you do not take care of your weakened joints, you will get hurt where you are bed ridden...or close. Not fun. Don't stop working out but now is not the time to push anything.

    By the way Sensei, will you ever make a video (or a podcast) where you address martial arts that use weapons? I used to train HEMA (and I want to get back to it) and I am curious to know if you had any tips or insights about training with weapons, since it deepens a lot of techniques and concepts we usually do more naturally (like footwork and guards). • @matheusviolante8364
      @matheusviolante8364 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ando Mierzwa I understand your concern but I believe what would be more valuable is your martial arts knowledge and philosophy apllied to weapon techniques, more than anything else, really. In any case, thanks for the response!
      And I find really dumb how training with weapons is a taboo but criminals and murderers don't hesitate to grab whatever they can and then wield it against us. In these cases I'd rather be holding a stick and using it as a sword than holding no stick at all. This is what I say when someone looks down on me for practicing HEMA.

    Nice tips sensei ando i am wondering if this could be a great suggestion for a front kick or all kicks in general
    When doing a kick i notice its common for the kicker is to focus too much on folding the knee up before finally snapping which robs alot of velocity to generate alot more destructive power so the suggestion was if the kicker instead was to take power from springing motion the kicking leg gets from the ground and have the knee loose letting the power they get from the ground fold the leg for them and the kick is to be rapidly executed in a similar motion as a whip forming a rapid all in one motion snap kick of incredible speed and power as opposed to the more common slower restrained snap kick?thank you if you could share your thoughts on it sensei ando ^^

    • @AndoMierzwa
      @AndoMierzwa  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes! Anything you can do to stop winding up or moving backwards should be applied to every kick. Like anything, chambers have a time and place. We should be able to perform kicks more than one way. Thanks for the question!

    • @user-bl7bm3vq5x
      @user-bl7bm3vq5x 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I see thank you too sensei ando i agree that the methods of chambering depend on your current situation a ground powered auto chambered all in one motion snap whip kick is great for quickly dealing damage and the slower 2 motion chamber kick is more for tactical reasons like to make your opponents guess the type of kick your throwing right?^^

      @@AndoMierzwa that was one of the things I found myself doing reflexively, which I was surprised that others I trained with did not. If I tripped, I would naturally roll out of it, to the point that apparently it looked intentional on my part. I found there is actually a relatively long window during a fall, once only starting to initiated it when my shoulder hit the ground. It's useful, though if I fall from a height, I ragdoll or push myself into a vertical surface to cut the force in half instead.
